The latest version of the high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) doubles the amount of data that can flow to your television from components like disc players and cable boxes. Onscreen, that means smooth transitions between shades of color and a greater range of hues reproduced—from about half the colors the eye can see to more than 90 percent of them. Cables can also carry high-quality uncompressed surround-sound signals. HDMI 1.3 first appeared on the PlayStation 3 late last year and has been showing up in TV sets, audio receivers and DVD players this year. hdmi.org
