LOST SENSE OF SMELL can be the first sign of diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Comparatively few brain cells are devoted to odor detection, so losing just a few of them can cripple your olfactory abilities. The Sniff Magnitude Test, developed by researchers at the University of Cincinnati, is the first to gauge patients’ ability to smell without requiring any verbal feedback. It simply measures the pressure produced by a person’s inhalations (an acute sense of smell means smaller whiffs). A poor score doesn’t necessarily indicate neurodegenerative disease, but it does signal that the test-taker needs further evaluation. wrmed.com
