LEAD IS IDEAL for blocking potentially harmful x-rays, but it’s also some of the most toxic stuff around. A new type of radiation shield uses a nontoxic, nylon-based compound mixed with small amounts of tungsten that stops x-rays like lead does, but without any of the environmental hazards.
