Engineering
Fosters + Partners, Multiplex Wembley Stadium

Perfect views from every seat

The 443-foot-tall arch that towers over the new Wembley Stadium in London supports the whole north roof and 60 percent of the south roof. The 22-foot-diameter tube is made of 500 steel rods, welded together. For fans, that means no support pylons and a completely unobstructed view of the field no matter which of the stadium’s 90,000 seats they’re in. A computer system monitors sun exposure and controls the four-acre retractable roof to ensure that light and fresh air reach the entire field, keeping it in ideal shape. Another fan-friendly touch: 2,600 toilets, the most of any single building in the world. wembleystadium.com
