TALES OF TESTING:
SÉAN CAPTAIN, WHAT’S NEW EDITOR

I generally stay away from the poker tables in Las Vegas, but I couldn’t keep my hands off this one. My fellow gamblers and I swiped our fingers across the 30-inch tabletop—a demo of Microsoft’s new touch-based computer—to move virtual cards projected from below. The Surface can track hundreds of touches at a time (more than any other screen) using an infrared light and five infrared cameras that notice objects on its surface. The cameras can even identify objects marked with a special dotted tag, so future versions could automatically import photos from a tagged camera set on the table. Bet on seeing Surface in hotel concierge desks and store kiosks early next year, and in home tabletops by 2012. microsoft.com
