The plug-in revolution is coming

Practical electric cars seemed like a distant dream until General Motors unveiled its Volt concept this year. This plug-in hybrid uses GM’s new E-Flex system—in which an electric motor handles all the driving while a three-cylinder engine charges the battery pack—and will manage a 40-mile round trip on electricity alone. This is enough to allow 78 percent of Americans to commute without burning a drop of gasoline. With the engine recharging the lithium-ion battery pack, the range is 640 miles at 53 mpg. When parked, it can plug in anywhere and fully charge in six hours. The Volt could be on the road by 2010. gm.com
