2008 Honda Accord

A super-clean v6

The 2008 Accord—Honda’s eighth generation—is among the first V6 engines to achieve California’s strict Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle status, emitting exhaust that’s 90 percent cleaner than the exhaust from the average vehicle in 2004. Its tightly sealed fuel system keeps gas from evaporating into the atmosphere, stopping a common source of emissions. And its 268-horsepower engine can run with two or three cylinders deactivated, increasing fuel efficiency by 10 percent. Unlucky pedestrians will like it too: Honda designed the Accord’s hood and beveled corners to collapse more readily if the car hits someone, which can save lives. From $26,600; honda.com
