2008 BMW M3

An F1 engine for the road

When BMW decided to put the first V8 in its 3-series, it didn’t skimp. At more than 100 horsepower per liter, the 4.0-liter, 414-horsepower engine is among the world’s strongest for its size, and it shares its basic 32-valve design with BMW’s F1 racers. It even revs to an unusually high 8,400 rpm. The result is a 0–60 time of 4.5 seconds, three tenths of a second faster than the last model. And although the engine has 91 more horses than the former M3’s six-cylinder, it’s lighter and more fuel-efficient. $63,000 (est.); bmwusa.com
