A highway-worthy hybrid

Hybrid cars sip gas in city driving, but their electric motors do little to boost mileage at higher speeds, where they don’t run as efficiently. The Two-Mode Hybrid system, debuting on the 2008 Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs, brings hybrid benefits to the open highway. At high speeds, the electric motors connect to different gears that allow them to keep contributing efficiently. The V8 can also switch off four of its cylinders when it doesn’t need the power. In our test, the Tahoe managed 20 mpg over the non-hybrid’s 16 mpg. Chrysler, Mercedes and BMW also expect to use the transmission in the next two years. gm.com
