Because of emissIons standards, many new diesel cars will have to carry a tank of urea, an ammonia-like substance that neutralizes tailpipe pollution and will have to be replenished regularly. Honda’s new Intelligent Diesel Technology (i-DTEC) engine will be the first diesel that meets toughened 2009 emission standards in all 50 states without carrying urea, saving you that extra annual trip to the dealer. The unique catalytic converter gathers harmful nitrogen oxides in the exhaust, transforms them into ammonia, and uses the ammonia to convert the remaining NOx into harmless nitrogen. Look for the technology in Honda’s lineup in 2009. honda.com
