European defense giant EADS surprised the worldwide military establishment in January when its Barracuda unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) prototype was unveiled not as a glorified toy airplane like earlier European stealth UCAVs, but a full-size machine. For the Barracuda, EADS is developing radar, electronic and optical sensors, and missiles and bombs that release from an internal bay. The craft’s conventional aircraft configuration—as opposed to the flying-wing UCAVs at U.S. test centers—makes it much more maneuverable in the air. eads.com
