This encroachment on our space is apparent in the growing number of small footprint, zero-lot houses that are being built. This reduction in square footage is epitomized in Richard Hordens micro compact home (m-ch). Now thats cozy.

If you happen to own or live in such cramp quarters, then youll appreciate methods for maximizing your usable space. One such utilization is the zero-space ironing board. Most of these ironing board are housed in smooth-finished cabinets that are fastened between a homes wall studs. Unfortunately, this installation method doesnt work for homes that are already built and finished. In this case, the wall-mounted ironing board by Hide-Away is a usable option.

1. FIND A STUD

Although the surface-mounted ironing board can be mounted flush on a wall, you will need to find a wall stud for hanging the Hide-Away cabinet. Accurately finding wall studs is the bane of the home DIYer. One of the easiest methods for finding a wall stud is to look for signs of a wall stud. Electrical outlet plates (i.e., the electrical junction box is usually nailed into an adjacent wall stud), nails in baseboard trim, and wall openings (e.g., corners, doors, windows, etc.) are all earmarks of likely stud locations. When you think that youve located a possible wall stud, use your knuckle to knock on the walls drywall and listen for changes in sound: hollow sounds are generally open wall areas, while denser sounds might indicate a wall stud. If all else fails, confirm your wall stud location suspicion with a commercial wall stud locator.

2. DO THE DRILL

In order to ensure that the cabinets door hangs plumb, temporarily install the door hinges prior to hanging the ironing board unit. Its far easier to attach these hinges while the unit is laying flat on the floor rather than hanging on the wall. When you are satisfied with the doors fit, remove the hinges. Finally, drill two 1/4-inch holes (e.g., cabinet top and cabinet bottom) which will serve as attachment points to the wall stud.

3. HANG ‘EM HIGH

Determine how high you want your ironing board. A comfortable height for the surface-mounted cabinet is 27-inches off the floor (i.e., as measured from the cabinets bottom side). Now align the pre-drilled holes with the wall stud and attach two of the supplied 3-inch lag screws. Finally, reattach the door, using the previously installed hinges.

You are now living in a wrinkle-free world.

Last night Google released Presentations, the latest in its suite of online applications, and a potential competitor to Microsoft's massively popular PowerPoint. All you need is a Google Docs account to access the free tool, an easy-to-use, scaled-down version of Microsoft's mainstay. Not all the reviews have been glowing. At this point there's really no competition. Powerpoint has far more features, and it's already more than a simple business presentation tool—it's a medium for artistic expression, and nearly a cultural force. Filmmaker Werner Herzog, director of Grizzly Man and the recent Rescue Dawn, chronicles his time at Antarctica's famous McMurdo Station for his latest movie, Encounters at the End of the World. The movie is both about the place and the animals that inhabit it—the natural life and the scientists that study it. Reviews of the film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, suggest that Herzog didn't throw all of his considerable skill at the project, but that the finished product and, in particular, the director's take on just what we're doing there at McMurdo in the first place, is impressive.—Gregory Mone

A Florida developer is building a massive, $29 million waterfront home that should end up being the first of its size to get a thumbs-up from the U.S. Green Building Council.

He didn't skimp on amenities: The house will have eight bedrooms, 11 baths, two eleveators, two wine cellars and more. This micrograph of a zebra fish brain was a finalist in Nikon´s annual Small World Competition, a contest among professionals and amateurs in the field of light microscopy, the craft of imaging small items with visible light. Here, the fish´s embryonic brain glows because of fluorescent molecules that bind to specific proteins in the tissue. Long, message-carrying axons of neurons shine blue, while a specific form of a protein called tuberin radiates red.

Just six days after we introduced the MOSPAM proposition ("Will spam reach record levels before September 30, 2007?") on PPX, the stock paid out at POP$100 per share when spam as a percentage of all email hit an all-time high. According to global IT security firm SoftScan, a whopping 98 percent of email sent on September 16 was classified as junk. Traders foresaw the new high and the stock was trading at $69.75 per share when the European IT firm SoftScan released their official count on September 17, at 3pm EST.   We've already seen a bunch of solar-panel backpacks, but now scientists are designing some luggage that harvests energy from a more immediate source. The straps for these new backpacks are made of a piezoelectric material, which means they can generate an electrical charge when stressed. If you're carrying a hefty pack and walking at a decent clip, you'll generate enough juice through the straps to power small electronic devices. And the researchers say there won't be a noticeable difference—the pack will feel the same on your shoulders.—Gregory Mone

Free music? As in, honestly, no record companies coming after you free? Yes, that's the story with the newly launched, ad-supported Web site, Spiralfrog.com.

The music service, which has had its share of business woes recently, cut a deal with Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group to build its catalog. Universal opened up its collection, which includes top artists like Gwen Stefani (left), in return for a cut of advertising and sponsorship revenue. Selling those little discs must not be working out so well anymore.

Users sign up for free, but must visit the site at least once a month to retain access to their tunes. You won't be able to burn discs, but you can transfer the music to portable players. Just not the iPod. And that's the catch.—Gregory Mone

As if launching a space tourism company and stocking seats with Linux computers weren't enough, Virgin has now truly endeared itself to the tech community, as the company is going to start offering inflight Wi-Fi and seat-based Ethernet jacks starting in 2008. If passengers don't feel like pulling their notebooks out, they can access the Internet through the entertainment system built into the seat-back.
