Dear President Obama,
What a relief, many of us thought this morning. We re-elected a president who supports public funding for research (truthfully, public funding for anything). We re-elected a president who acknowledges the reality of climate change (at least you did in your victory speech if not during the campaign). We re-elected a president who so eloquently describes occupations like doctors, scientists and engineers as the definition of American aspiration.
Still, we have some things to discuss. During the next four years, you will have a monumental opportunity to change how this country lives: How we produce electricity, get around, communicate, share and protect our ideas, explore new places, and tend to this planet. We have some suggestions.
You can use the bully pulpit to change our tax code, like you said last night, but also our patent laws. You can ensure all Americans have access to high-speed communications--in rural areas and in cities--and that we can do what we want with it, no matter our service provider. You can do something about the way we consume fossil fuels, not only to free us from foreign oil but to stanch the flow of carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere.
Maybe most importantly, you can remind the public to honor the intellectual courage and curiosity of our heritage. You can fund basic science research and exploration, on this planet and on others. You should not let the rantings of a vocal minority dictate the terms of our conversation on medical research, climate change and science education. Mr. President, you can be the president of the future we all seek, if you are as bold in your actions as you are in your words. Following are some of our suggestions.
Sincerely,
The writers and editors of Popular Science

Climate Change
The utter lack of discussion about climate change was a disappointment throughout the campaign. Debates and rallies came and went without a mention of rising temperatures or greenhouse gas emissions--until Hurricane Sandy, when the impact of a changing global climate came home in force. In your victory speech, you said we don’t want our children to live in an America that is “threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet.” We’re heartened that you’re finally acknowledging this reality, but you must confront it. You can set ambitious goals for reducing carbon emissions, as this country already promised to do by 2020, and you can invest more federal funds in alternative energies. But first, ring the klaxons, repeatedly, that this is real and happening now.
Rebecca Boyle, contributing writer
Another suggestion: Revive the discussion about cap and trade. Putting a price on carbon pollution is a matter of extreme urgency. To have any hope of avoiding the worst impacts of climate change we must immediately begin reducing our use of fossil fuels. Over the past four years, your administration has provided unprecedented support for clean energy and automotive fuel efficiency. But it’s not enough. Until polluters are forced to pay a fair price on carbon emissions, it will be difficult if not impossible for a clean energy economy to take hold. I urge you to push for a cap-and-trade legislation in your second term.

Drones
From a technology perspective, unmanned aircraft--especially the self-piloted kind--are indisputably awesome. Moreover, they have a lot to give us. From military intelligence and surveillance aircraft to the Global Hawks that fly science missions through hurricanes, our drones have the potential to make life better. That potential will soar in 2015, when the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to open up America’s civilian airspace to unmanned systems.
Unmanned aircraft are going to be a huge part of the future of aviation, but with great technology comes great ethical responsibility. We want to see this technology grow and proliferate. We want to see investment in robotics research, and we want to see that investment translate into a safer, more efficient way of living. What we don’t want to see is the human factor so removed from warfare that it becomes easier to tackle problems with a drone strike rather than with statesmanship, diplomacy, and the art of compromise.
We want more drones, but we want fewer shadow wars. Let’s develop a legal, ethical framework for ensuring that the precedents you set in your second term put us on a path for responsible use of unmanned systems technology. The rest of the world isn’t terribly far behind the U.S. in drone capabilities, and others are going to look at the example you set for how best to deploy it.

Net Neutrality
The Internet may be huge, but it still needs protection. The ability to do what we wish with our connections--circumvent traditional TV and phone service, for instance--is under attack. It's not Verizon or Comcast's Internet, it's our Internet. Let's keep it that way. Body block anything that tries to flip net neutrality, and keep the service providers and their despicable tiered-based-on-content pay plans at bay. This isn't just about preserving our right to cable-cut: it's about protecting small businesses in the new millenium. If the IP overlords have their way, they could have any and every startup and small competitor in a choke-hold. Don't let that happen.

Scientific Research
Please keep U.S. science strong. Funding for basic research has dropped almost 10 percent in the past nine years, and with the Budget Control Act set to take effect in January, it will fall even more sharply in the next five. If discretionary spending cuts come to pass, please try to shield science, which is hurting already. Facilities like the Large Hadron Collider and the ITER fusion reactor are being built overseas--taking their grant money abroad, too--and we need labs and research jobs in the U.S. I want kids like Taylor Wilson and Easton LaChappelle to be able to work here as scientists someday.
Katie Peek, Ph.D., information graphics designer (and an astrophysicist)

Space Exploration
Please give our space agency a true sense of purpose. As the Mars rover Curiosity continues to prove, Americans still deeply love our space program and are amazed by what it can do. People of all ages are inspired by our countrymen's ability to build rockets and robots powerful enough to explore other worlds. NASA is capable of doing great things, but it needs a clear mission--and in your first term, you were unclear at best. Choose to go to Mars, not because it is easy or inexpensive, but because it is hard, and will require immense investment from the public and private sectors. Choose to fund ambitious space telescopes and the research labs that will use them to understand our place in the universe. Or choose to spend more national time and treasure understanding our own planet from the unique vantage point of space. Whatever you do, please be clear.

Patent Reform
The U.S. patent system now discourages the innovators it's supposed to protect. Patent issuing has skyrocketed from about 1 million a century to 1 million every four years. The reason for that is simple: The world is eager for scientific and medical research, software and electronics development, and other layer-cakes of ideas. But too many of the recent patents cover broad, poorly scoped ideas, drowning innovation in lawsuits. Companies that own hundreds or thousands of patents they might never use spend their time taking legitimate startups to court. Life-saving drugs and medical tools are kept artificially costly—out of reach of people who need them the most. And instead of building healthy competition that benefits consumers, big businesses engage in patent-buying arms races and billion-dollar legal battles over the mere idea, for example, of fingers touching smartphone screens.
Today's patent system is bad for science, bad for the economy, and bad for innovation. The SHIELD Act is a good start but falls short. You should arrange a panel of researchers with extensive backgrounds on the costs and benefits of the U.S. patent system, then charge them with developing recommendations to end rampant patent trolling, the granting of patents over broad or obvious ideas, and out-of-scope court judgments. Should you have the chance to pick a new Supreme Court justice, consider judges whose stances enforce legal interpretations of patents that benefit the nation as a whole.

Sleep Health
The administration has already made great strides trying to get Americans to eat right and exercise. But one basic health need still isn’t getting the attention it deserves: sleep. According to the CDC, approximately 60 million Americans are not sleeping long enough or well enough. This sleep debt leads to some fairly predictable consequences (driving accidents, less work productivity, and more colds and flu). There’s also mounting evidence that sleep is intertwined with health problems in some surprising ways. Several studies released this spring demonstrated that people with sleep apnea are more likely to get cancer. Others have found that decreasing a person’s sleep on just a few nights can have an immediate impact on his body’s metabolism and ability to process sugars. It might not just be that obesity is causing sleep problems, but poor sleep may be increasing obesity, as well.

Certainly the most hypocritical statement in the article by Pop Sci which is terribly one sided on many scientific debates.
Intelligent and well reasoned arguments, I honestly hope that like me President Obama is an avid Popular Science reader.
Now that's out of the way, time to sit back and drink in the tears of all the Romney supporters that I'm sure will be crying their hearts out over this article within the next couple minutes
For instance.
Pop Sci would never talk about soft tissue existing in Dino fossils past the point it should have been long since decayed.
Schweitzer, M. H. et al. 2009. Biomolecular Characterization and Protein Sequences of the Campanian Hadrosaur B. canadensis. Science. 324 (5927): 626-631.
Nor talk much about the ENCODE project which has shown that 80 some percent of our DNA is functional (and not junk).
This is a nice speech, but like Bagpipes100 said, certain amazing scientific facts are omitted. I go to PopSci not to learn about science that has already made the news, but amazing science that can possibly change everything we know. Unfortunately, that kind of science is so astounding and contradicting to anything we've seen before that rival scientists try to cover it up.
@kungfujustice & the prez.
Holy cool-aid batman! You dont need to drink my tears kunfujustice.... just keep drinkin that cool-aid. And while youre at it mr. president, I got a list of stuff I need too! Jobs, a BUDGET lmao.... oh and, i'd like you to stick to the constitution this term if your not too busy executive ordering us all to hell. Hope and change! Yeah baby!!! Well... better go out and buy some health insurance i dont need so i dont get fined, or taxed... er... whatever.... and pop-sci is lookin for a internet we can do what we want with??? Yeah ok. So all you gotta do nowadays is promise everything... deliver nothing... and then trash your oponent and you still get re-elected? Hope and change baby!!! Good luck on your wish list pop-sci. If the last four years was any measure of the man's ability to do things and keep promises your in for a dissappointing four more years. Why dont you write another article at the end of this term and let us know how ya did on gettin your wishes done? I'll be sure to read it. In the mean time.. keep drinkin that cool-aid! I'm going to hide my wallet.... lmao.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua
Could I just lick your eye lids real quick? Just one fast lick to drink in those sweet, salty, oh so delicious tea party tears?
No? I'll give you a moment to think it over, in the mean time I'll give you exactly what you asked for.
5.4 million new jobs in the past 2 years.
A plan for reducing the debt that raises two dollars in new revenues for every dollar in spending cuts, and has been signed off on by the nations leading economists.
And as far sticking to the constitution goes people in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones, *cough* PATRIOT ACT! *cough* GUANTANAMO! *cough*
Dear Popular Science,
Did you know that funding of scientific research DECREASED during the Obama Administration after Increasing during the Bush years? President Obama doesn't care what you want. he will continue to use drones to bomb countries like Pakistan and to do his dirty work around the globe. You'e wasting your breath and time if you think any Republican or Democrat in this country is going to turn his/her back on the Billions of dollars in funding and fringe benefits recieved from said donors.
@kdaviper
When you say that scientific funding is lower in the Obama years than in the Bush years did you take into account the worst recession in living memory and a crushing 16 trillion dollar national debt brought on by two back to back wars in the Middle East?
What are you talking about? This guy spent 6 TRILLION dollars and didn't create a single decent private sector job. He threw billions away on solar cell pipe dreams. This is the beginning of a nightmare it's "HIS nightmare" stop blaming BUSH, when does it ever become Obama's responsibility?
16 trillion in debt again 312 million, including babies and all this pie in the sky wishful dreaming from PoPSCi is just dreaming. I do not think any government offical or the regular people has actually comprehended the extreme large amount of debt the USA is in.
Hello Reality!
Kungfujustice was right. Here come the tears.
@Robot
I assure you just about everyone on the planet in acutely aware that the sh*t is about to hit the proverbial fan in regards to our national debt unless we do something about it.
@davek01521
He's actually helped create a lot of decent private sector jobs including around half a million in advanced manufacturing.
As far as solar energy goes, let me explain what he and other Democrats are actually trying to do. The age of oil is coming to an end, it's an extremely finite resource and we're running out of it, so it IS coming to an end and there is absolutely nothing that can be done about that.
But we can take a lesson from it, over the past century the sheikhs and princes in the Middle East that have controlled most of the world's supply of oil have reaped a truly ungodly amount of money from it.
If the United States can get in on the ground floor of whatever form of energy of energy that will dominate the next century, whether it be fusion, wind, solar, or natural gas. Then WE will become the energy barons of the next century, and WE will be the ones reaping the monetary benefit.
@Kungfu...
dude stick to your cool-aid. you lick my tears and for sure you'll see things my way!
"CNN fact-checked that claim and found it to be "not the whole picture." Instead, CNN found that there has been a net increase of just 300,000 nonfarm payroll jobs since Obama took office. And if you count government jobs, there are actually 400,000 fewer people working today than in January 2009.
When Democrats use the 4.5 million jobs number, they're referring to jobs created after the economy bottomed out in January 2010, one year after Obama took office. That time frame excludes the worst job losses, which took place in 2009, and which many Democrats argue were the result of Bush policies.
CNN concludes: "The figure of 4.5 million jobs is accurate if you look at the most FAVORABLE period AND CATAGORY for the administration. But overall, there are still fewer people working now than when Obama took office at the HEIGHT of the recession."
YES... listen to that carefully.... there are STILL fewer people working now that at the HEIGHT of the recession!!! FOUR YEARS after it supposedly ended. And... Thats from your own CNN cool-aid drinkin fact checkers my man.... and you know what that adds up to? Not enough job growth to even keep up with population growth. We need something like 250,000 new jobs a month and are only seeing half that at best. Cost of livin up... wages down... less jobs.... RECORD deficits..... NO kingfu.... you dont wanna drink my tears and see things the way I do. Cuz when it comes to this stuff.. I DONT drink the cool-aid.... I dont see these guys through adoring eyes... I didnt even like romney to tell you the truth... but to me he was the lesser of two evils. If ya want the truth they all come in to office cuz they got hope and change on their mind... thats why they all use those words... politicians I mean... EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM DO.... and then they get corrupted by the establishment. So drink your cool-aid... be happy.... adore obama al ya want i dont give a shoot... and when you wake up some day and realize that whoever gets in dont really change a damn thing for either one of us..... then we can talk. Peace out.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@kungfu...
....and the age of oil is not coming to an end, thats a myth..... there is more oil under american land than in saudi arabia.... enough for me, you, our kids and their kids maybe more..... fact check it.... your argument should be that we cant keep burnin the stuff cuz its damaging the planet. Thats how ya do it when ya dont drink the cool-aid... get informed and side with what you KNOW... not with a figurehead or a party. The problem is not your faut though.... too much propoganda that people just accept as fact. The key is to dig until youre sure you KNOW.
OK enough of my tears.... i really didnt wanna debate this crap past election day with uninformed people.... and I'm a day late... and thanks to B.O. now i'm a dollar short... lmao... gnite... congrats all you Obamaclones!
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua
So that's a "no" on the tears then????
I know about the CNN fact checks, on both the job score and the national debt.
If you'll notice I never claimed we didn't lose jobs, when the recession began we were losing 700,000 a month, but the recession lost its steam 2 years ago. You may have noticed that the unemployment rate has gone down and we're no longer bleeding jobs, and in the two years since we stopped the bleed 5.4 million new jobs have been created. Those are the facts and I dare you to dispute them.
On the topic of national debt when CNN fact checked Obama they lacked all the facts, they assumed his debt plan was simply about increasing taxes on the rich, it's not.
It's also about shutting down ridiculous deductions for one percenters that allow someone like Mitt Romney to pay a 15 percent tax rate while my father who makes just under a 100,000 thousand dollars a year has to pay a 21 percent tax rate.
And finally it's also about cutting government spending on programs that are not helping middle class americans, but rather wasting tax payer money.
Yes you heard correctly, Obama actually plans to cut government spending, try not to have a stroke.
@GGenua
Let me tell you how oil works since you clearly forgotten all your high school science classes. Oil is a NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCE it's created over the course of millions of years from pools of rotting bio matter, basically your car runs on the decayed liquefied bodies of dinosaurs, and I suppose if you have a couple million years to wait around more might be created, assuming you don't however, current estimates have us completely burning through the supply we have by as early as 2060.
@kungfu...
I will dispute them.... we are not done bleeding jobs if your not creating enough to even keep up with the population growth. That means there are people coming into the workforce that have no place to work cuz there are no jobs.... that was the argument about the collage kids not being able to find jobs thing??? remember??? Half of all collage grads are unemployed??? I'd say thats a good dispute... and what dont you get about allowing the "1%" to keep more money so they will invest in more jobs??? I mean is it just envy? Do you really think it hurts them if a billionaire pays 30% or 40%? They dont give a rats arse! Their still gonna bank a certain percentage no matter what uncle obama wants to take.... but if they have more to play with then they invest. And their investments create jobs. And heres another fact for ya.... even if we tax the hell out of the one percenters it will not dent the deficit!!! So whos it helping??? NO one. I have a small business and i bank a certain amount for uncle sam and a certain amount for ME... regardless of anything.... whats mine is mine... if uncle sam dot take to much of his share out of the account i have set aside for him then i can invest it... and all of business worls the same way especially big business... people think individually.... they work for home depot but think about their own pocket... its human nature... but helpin home depot helps your pocket! If home depot is doing great then your more lickely to see a raise... your friend is more likely to get a job there too. I could go on and on but the bottom line is that you have to have a strong foundation if you want a strong house... and business is america's foundation.
This is what you dont understand.... facts and figures aside... You or I could do just as good a job as president obama... you know why? Cuz we'd have aids and advisors for everything just like he does... he's got aids to wipe his arse and an advisor tellin the aid how to. And so every president starts out on equal footing... you and me included.... BUT what makes an exceptional president... one that actually gets things done and doesnt blame others is what makes a real LEADER... and that is someone who brings people together.... not hung up on HIS way and HIS ego... this guy thinks he's jesus christ. You dont get anywhere that way.... you have to compromise... you tell the other side "what?... dont wanna raise taxes on the one percenters??? ok then, lets get rid of some of the other ways they make money and keep some of that for revenue... or how about we let them keep the extra tax money but they HAVE TO commit it to jobs creation. Or how about if i give you this and you give me that"..... its all about getting people to work together... Bipartisanship.... somehting obama promised 4 years ago and became the most partisan president in history ... thus... gridlock... and we're in for four more years of it.... the house is republican.... he better learn to compromise.... THAT is what makes a LEADER kungfu. Obama hasnt done anything exceptional.... average, maybe... but anyone can do average. ANYONE could have the numbers you put up on your last post. I just thought the country could have benifited from a proven business guy who knew all the business loopholes.... people say he shipped jobs overseas? they say he scammed while he was in business... well hell put some of the scams to work for US now. Why people didnt relate to that i dont know... but romney seemed more like the "get er done" type a guy to me... like I said, facts and figures aside... we needed a leader to work with both parties... but america voted for more gridlock instead last night.... And thats all because people just glance at propaganda and take it in as fact instead of actually finding out the truth. You, for example, are just spewing out Obama's stump speech to me... I've heard it kungfu.... for four years... but HIS facts are candy-coated by his aids and advisors to paint him in the most favorable light. He's incompitent fo the magnitude of this job.... we needed a leader.. to work together. OK rant over.... but.... congrats man.... you know... we're all americans. Here's to four better years.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@kungfu....
lol.... no i havent forgotten. But how much 70's highschool stuff really applies today? Most estimates say that we'll run out somewhere between 20 and 40 years from now.... but heres the stipulation.... That estimate is based on todays active known reserves (wells, fields, etc..) There are countless more.... we were running out in the 70's too... the big oil crisis. Paranoia everywhere.... well we didnt... know why? they tapped more wells... discovered more... and as technology gets better so will out ability to get oil from places we could never think of getting it today. You read way too much propaganda. You drink wayyyy to much cool-aids... it rots your thinking. PLease please please get informed before citing to me highschool lessons as facts. The fact is that no one knows how much oil reserves are in the world.... discoveries are made all the time... technologies improve.... things change. Read up.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua,
Pull yourself together. And although its true the USA has rather large reserves of oil, these reserves are in some of the worlds most inconvenient places, places that would require un-environmentally conscious methods of extraction such as fracking, etc.
However if you decide that you are fine with looking out your window and enjoy a view of a morning sunrise and oil pumps across the horizon, then please be my guest and move to Alaska.
Side note, does your computer not have spell check or something, or am I detecting a extreme case of rage mode plus not being able to see the keyboard due to an ungodly amount of tea party tears?
@GGenua
Thank you, and I do mean that sincerely because I'm going to have soooooo much fun with this lol
We tried trickle down economics for 8 years with the Bush administration, we gave the rich massive tax cuts and the result was where as during the Clinton administration the average CEO made 30 times his workers salary during the Bush administration the average CEO made over 100 times his workers salary. It also resulted in slowest economic growth in modern history, and the government deregulation of our banking system resulted in some not so awesome side affects, like I don't know...say...the worst recession to hit this country since the Great Depression.
You want a visual of what trickle down economics really adds up to? Imagine Donald Trump standing on a balcony and you standing right beneath him, Donald Trump unzips his pants and just really let's it rip, right down on of top your head. THAT is trickle down economics.
As far as cooperation goes 4 years ago the current Republican House majority leader said the top political priority over the next 4 years was not to put America back to work, it was to put the president OUT of work. If that sounds like someone open to bipartisan cooperation to you, I have some beautiful ocean view property in Antarctica you might be interested in.
@007timex
Yes... its the tea. lmao....
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua
For someone who reads Popular Science, you seem to be lacking a lot of knowledge about the advancement of modern technology.
We no longer randomly point at the ground and shout "DIG!" when it comes to looking for oil, we have low earth orbit satellites that ping the ground with radar and locate where its buried, there may be a couple deep pockets left to be found, but not many, and with the current rate of technological advancement we'll have radar capable of detecting what's buried up to a mile beneath the earth within the next decade.
@kungfujustice
well see thats where your wrong again.... damn i would like to give you a complete course in history here but i just aint got the time.... let me sum up then.
Ya see... each president instates certain policies... and by the time they get out of office and the next president comes in... some or most of those policies are just then beginning to show their effects... so this is how its worked since reagan... reagan came in.... took over carter's crap economy and started the trickle down thing... by the time reagan left and the economy was set right with reaganomics the first bush took over and like most republicans, couldnt wait to go to war.... but despite that the economy wasnt so bad.... when clinton took over he he did a great job... now there was a good leader... he had the help of the internet boom to boost his numbers but hey its all good.... well... here since you wont read up I'll post some things here for ya....
"Watch almost any political talk show and you will hear a Democratic strategist or campaign person enthusiastically state that the deregulation of the banking industry meant that no one was watching Wall Street for you. Barack Obama has even used the refrain ”deregulation by the Republicans” to point a finger about the mortgage crisis.
Well deregulation did occur and it did change things in the banking industry. First some background. Until 1999, banks were restricted to certain businesses, Bill Clinton and a Republican Congress jointly deregulated the banking business. An example is that previously they could not enter into the insurance or brokerage business. Other factors were at play, such as interstate banking and states’ deregulation of banking. Non-bank insurance companies and brokerage houses were actively offering money market checking accounts. The sum of these changes placed banks at a disadvantage, since other non-regulated companies were divvying up the limited areas where bankers could operate.
Did this mean that banks would no longer be regulated? No. Did this mean that bank regulators would go away? No. It simply meant that banks could enter brokerage, insurance, and other businesses to a modest degree, with restrictions. This deregulation had nothing to do with the mortgage businesses of any bank or non-bank financial lending company.
Either the Democrats know this and choose to mislead you – not good, or do not know this and do not know what they are talking about – worse. The real problem, about which no one talks, was the intensity to which Democrats and with a modicum of Republican support fell in love with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. "
The article goes on but you get the gist I hope.... So ya see it wasnt bush or the republicans alone that caused the banking problems... Clinton... the dems favorite son was actually partly to blame... but i dont blame him at all cuz at the time it was a good idea... I actually Liked President Clinton... but as i said before... the policies of presidents outlive their terms in office... and sometimes policies that "meant well" for the time and place.... take a turn for the worse when times change... But anyways... the second bush faught two wars and of course wars cost money and then add the banking thing and BAM... you got a great recession! So blame trickle down all ya want but it wasnt that that started the recession.... trickle down worked once with reagan and it was working again with George W. until he went to war. I dont know why youre all making me out to be the bad guy here... I'm just trying to shed some light on the facts as they really are... not as the democratic party candy coated it for all the cool aid drinkers this election cycle.... I am not for one party or the other... and NO... 007timex... I am not a tea partier... Like i said before, i just like to see the real facts for myself and dont believe what I hear just cuz i heard it... I look at multiple sources and all sides before making up my mind on anything.... I vote for the person not any particular party.... independant?? maybe... I prefer the "self-thinker" party lol.... and no i dont use spell check... this isnt a essay or a thesus... its social media... cuz, lol, roflmao, and all that ya know??? Damn I need a life...lol.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@Kungfu.... seriously man.... I am not saying that we should continue to use oil as our primary source of energy.... I am just saying that we are not running out.... but you dont have to believe me.... here are some good reads on the subject.

Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua
Please don't think I'm being a d*ck, I'm just a dork who can talk about this crap for hours, that having been said you really don't have any idea what you're talking about, other than yes, Clinton is actually in part to blame.
After the Great Depression the leading minds of the time got together to figure out ways to ensure that it would never happen again. The plan they came up with was to legally separate investment funds from personal banking accounts.
In other words if you're in the financial field and you're working with other people's money you could either take that money and keep it safe by simply storing it in a bank and allowing it collect interest, or alternatively you could take that money and put it to work in the stock market, but under no circumstances could you ever do both.
This simple solution meant that if the stock market ever hit a recession, even though financial institutions like AIG or Bear Sterns would certainly feel the hit the average man paying off a home mortgage through a bank legally forbidden from using certain funds to compete in the stock market would be completely unaffected.
This system lead to over 50 years of massive undeterred economic growth, then in 1999, and under Clinton's watch it was repealed and banks suddenly had almost no restrictions about what they could and couldn't do with your money.
Then Bush got elected, and he got rid of what restrictions they actually DID have, and here we are.
One of the reasons I voted for Obama is because he's doing everything he can to get those restrictions back in place so this can never happen again.
Before you label someone uninformed you might want to do a little research of your own.
@kingfu....
If you dont want to read.... let me put it one last way to you...
The earth is aproximatley 5 billion years old right?
Earliest life that we know of formed on this planet 3.6 billion years ago right?
And as you say.... highschool taught us that oil is the result of dead biomatter right?
OK so how long does it take to create oil from biomatter???
"So how long does this process take?
Scientists aren't really sure, but they figure it's probably on the order of hundreds of thousands of years." source:
http://www.livescience.com/9404-mysterious-origin-supply-oil.html
Now... lets say it takes a million years.... thats one layer of oil deposits.. some in ural... some is the middle east... some in south america... and then another million years go by and more oil... in north america... in the antartic... etc etc.... and then another million years... and 4 million and 5 million and 100 million and 200 million and 1000 million... and we aint even a zit on mother natures behind yet and we got a billion years worth of oil reseves waiting... but wait... theres still 2.6 billion more years of this production process to go before we make our appearance and start using it.... now... we been using it for just over what? 100 years? and you say we're running out? I cant believe your a pop sci reader... seriously.... maybe too much cool aid?
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
@GGenua
No we're not running out of oil tomorrow, I never claimed we were what I took issue with was this, and allow me to quote directly from you.
"the age of oil is not coming to an end, thats a myth..... there is more oil under american land than in saudi arabia.... enough for me, you, our kids and their kids maybe more..... fact check it.... "
At current rate of consumption we have until 2060, maybe 2080 before we run out, that's hardly enough to support 5 generations of Americans.
We're burning exponentially a resource that took millions of years to create, this is extremely simple arithmetic, if we burn a substance we cannot make more of within the lifetime of our species IT WILL RUN OUT.
And I don't even freaking like Cool Aid! I drink Sunny D!
OK tell ya what.... I'll agree with you on the deregulations thing as long as you'll agree that there were other's involved. Sure it happened on Bush's watch... but greenspan... and many other's were all in on it. Now... obama is trying to correct some of it, I'll agree with you again... but at this time in our so called recovery... he is seriously stunting our growth with too much of it. And no your not bein a d*ck... I enjoy this as much as you, cant ya tell??? My guy lost and I'm still here takin my medicine from you and others... even got dissed for my spelling... as if i'm unedumacated... lmao.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
5 generations includes me, you, ur kids and their kids, maybe more!!!! so then we agree!!!! holy batsh*t batman! Think I'll have some sunny D now.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
Knowing that people will do anything to destroy their enemy, all they had to do was to whisper in your ear, you, you are the enemy the people like you. And divide you up by an imaginary left vs right and set you loose to kill each other.
People really are frighteningly stupid. Your so excited that the same guy who has been president for 4 years with two years of absolute power the other party not having the votes for anything just won again. Who didn't do any of the nice things you say you stand for, and why you believe what you believe and did do all of the bad things you say you stand against. And you expect something better this time rather than the same. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. This isn't going to be a good time for the world, not for any of us. I'm neither dem nor repub, I just vote for the lesser of two evils each time. The lesser of two evils did not win this time, the greater did.
You didn't win, we both lost. I just know it sooner than you do. I wish people would look past their blind faith in some idiotic political party and research enough to vote intelligently for a change. To think in thoughts larger than a bumper sticker slogan about gay marriage or big bird. Is that really too much to ask of people?
But just to argue with ya a little more.... not that we're arguing... but... do you have any idea how much biomatter has lived and died on earth in the last 3.6 BILLion years??? niether do I but i dont think we're gonna consume it all exponentially or existentially or exomatically anytime soon. Thats for all you spellchecker and definition freakos out there :)
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
well said mycellium. Geez took you one post to say what i been trying to say all gosh darn day! Listen to him kungfuyou! :) we're still friends tho right?
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
Yummy, delicious right wing tears, I CAN'T GET ENOUGH!!! But this will be my last post on the subject because now I'm bored and I'd rather eat pizza bagels and play Halo.
@Mycellium
I believe the point you're trying to make, and correct me if I'm wrong is:
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Obama won Waaaaaaaaaah! now we're stuck with medicare Waaaaaaaaah! now rich people have to pay more taxes Waaaaaaaaah! my genitia is abnormally small and I've never had an opinion that FOX News hasn't spoon fed me! Waaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Did I get all that?
@GGenua
This planet has been ravaged by 5 major extinction events that we know of, so my guess, not nearly as much as you think there is.
Ggenua: conventional oil extraction peaked in 2006. It is now being compensated with less energy efficient means(tar sands, deep sea drilling, hydraulic fracking). It is not a matter of running out, but a matter of energy return and an increasing demand. The world currently consumes over 80 million barrels of oil every day. It also consumes the 80 million easiest barrels to get. Every day it has to look a little deeper or put slightly more efforts in processing to offset the decline in conventional production. The population of the world has increased by seven fold in the past 100 or so years, simply because of the energy return in a barrel of oil. As the energy spent to produce a barrel of oil increases, the less it's energy return. This decrease is currently unavoidable and we can only hope to soften the blow through alternative energies, energy conservation and incentives to decline global population. Given that oil peaked 6 years ago and people still think the argument is about whether or not we're going to consume ALL of the world's oil leaves me to feel that we're fucked. Of course there will always be oil. The argument has never been about that. It's about energy return on energy invested(aka EROI)
hey kungfu,
you cant reason with fairy tale believing science deniers.
the best you can say is this
"we won, you lost, the country rejected your ideas.you right wingers are the MINORITY. go read your bible and we will try to fix the mess you people made during bush."oh yeah, also
"suck it bit$e$"
@Rusty Beaumont
"Of course there will always be oil. The argument has never been about that."
My conversation with kungfujustice is exactly about that... our conversation has never been about its economics nor the wisdom of its continued use. I dont think anyone believes we shouldnt find alternatives. So if you read All my posts you'll notice i agree with you. Thanks for the unintended help.
@kungfu...
I'm not sure what extinction events have to do with the sheer amounts of biomatter that has existed on this planet in the past 3.6 billion years. We're talkin plant and animal life. Moss, linchens, trees, shrubs, bushes (not the presidents... yet, lol)seaweeds and thick impassable forests that use to cover entire continents for eons, megafauna, plankton... every concievable animal.... Can we just agree to dissagree and call it a good conversation? Or better yet... I give.. ok, we'll run out... eventually.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
I just personally find it hard to fathom how anyone who follows a science blog can be in the corner of a republican candidate; the political party which is so antithetical to science and progress. I can't think of a single statement from the republican party this campaign that was anywhere near scientifically sound: The female body has a way of rejecting rape based conception, the earth isn't warming or if it is it certainly isn't our fault, or if it is, we have bigger things to worry about. Talk about kicking the can down the road…The entire party panders to a minority fundamental christian base scared out of their wits about science as a whole.
science site* sorry I've been out celebrating, much as the rest of the civilized world has, that America as a whole isn't completely oblivious
@GGenua
If you say 3.6 billion one more time I'm going to start a drinking game. It's ridiculous to speculate on how any of this applies to oil production, not to mention your numbers are completely retarded, the first animals actually sprouted up around 600 million years ago so you're only off by about 3 billion years, and please don't start knit picking about single cell organisms because I honestly do not give a sh*t, seriously I do not have one single sh*t to give on this subject, not one.
Now, I'm going to go smoke some weed, put on some Floyd and go to bed, because I live in Washington and it's legal to do that sh*t now.
@ggenua: I was speaking in response to this statement:
"the age of oil is not coming to an end, thats a myth..... there is more oil under american land than in saudi arabia.... enough for me, you, our kids and their kids maybe more..... fact check it...."
It's widely believed that the Saudis' ghawar field(60% of saudi output) peaked in 2005.
In all fairness, I will admit that Kungfu also did not mention the EROI.
@kungfu
It doesnt apply to oil production.... it applies to how long and the extreme amounts of raw materials that have been around being transformed into oil deposits by the earth... that is what we've been discussing right? If we're running out.... i think you already started the drinking game cuz life has been around well... here ... read:
http://garvandwane.com/evolution/when.html
@Rusty
Oh yeah... i see where you got the impression then. But yeah I'm in total agreement with you that its use as our primary source of energy is nearing an end. My only argument is that the earth is not running out of it. The earth will always have this stuff, It just wont be worth it for us to go get eventually... as alternatives become the better option. I'm not questioning that the easiest to get have nearly all been gotten.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
Dare I dream and spend more money the USA doesn't have.
Well, I am always for security. I like to see a larger R&D for drones and millions of them flying across the sky. They definitely put the scare in the terrorist and reach into places of which they believe they can hide, LOL!
"Hurricane Sandy, when the impact of a changing global climate came home in force."
"It's Just Weather Stupid!"
That Category 1 hurricane was NOT caused by CAGW (Catastrophic, Anthropogenic, Global, Warming). Even an English major should be able to understand that, no matter what your emotions tell you.
Shame on you for perpetuating that inaccurate claim.
I think PopSci just jumped the Shark Tank. Good luck with that.
Sandy or a similar storm was actually predicted to happen. By people who are competent at analyzing weather patterns. As a bio major and classical studies minor at my university, I do not believe in global warming - I accept the theory as a true fact. It isn't all caused by humans- but we have accelerated it and made it worse. So why not do something about it? Congratulations on choosing Obama, America. Good luck with the science. Thanks for making it to the moon. And go to Mars - if you can afford to, why not? Most of all keep ideas open, minds open and hearts open no matter where you stand on the political spectrum. Since ideas are what drives us forward.
@kungfu - you're wasting your time my friend. I don't know if you've noticed, but there are a ton of people who post on this site who violently ignore science. They "believe" evolution is fake, we never landed on the moon, and global warming is caused by Obama chemtrails. This is nothing new to the conservative movement. They simply troll these sites using terrible grammar and spelling and ranting over and over about the same lies. Obama created $6 trillion in debt. Obama hasn't created any jobs. Obama is a socialist. How many times has some nut said you're drinking kool-aid? They show time and again they care nothing for the facts, and are more than willing to let their hate guide their "beliefs", with extremely tired arguments. Sure, tons of analysts say $4 trillion of that debt was interest and carry-over loans from the Bush wars, but as long as Fox is blasting $6 TRILLION, they don't care for reality. Sure, the facts consistently say more jobs have been created, and even more attempts were made that were completely shut down by the GOP, but as long as they have their reports from Tea Party.org, or selectively pull quotes from legitimate sources, they don't care what everyone else says. After all, everyone but Fox News is just "liberal media" to them. They constantly berate Popsci for writing political articles, completely ignoring it is called political SCIENCE. They fume that Popsci supports Obama, but don't care that it's because the opposition consistently denies what 90% of scientists say, and do everything they can to suppress science.
In short, kungfu, you're wasting your most likely very valuable time. Not only are these people woefully ignorant, but they derive pleasure from blasting their ridiculous views. Take a lesson from Dr. Carl Sagan, who said "you can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe".
syfyguy,
A myth is a story handed down from a previous culture. With the Sumerian history, there was no previous culture that state we were made by the GODS or Aliens from above. They describe our solar system correctly, in the correct positions and knew of Pluto and Uranus and Neptune colors. They knew the planets were round. They counted our planets from the outside to in towards the Sun and the Earth is the 7th planet. They said our gods came from the most outer planet, what we call planet x, that our current researchers are looking for. Once our probe past Pluto and NASA with Pluto moon could accurately know Pluto weight, they figure Pluto size and gravity could not affect the inner planets and another ‘not found’ planet X must exist. So yes an evolution is real and so are our alien friends and the creation of humans from the monkeys.
Science and archeology science is so COOL!
Dear Mister President,
Almost all of us have heard the nursery rhyme of the three pigs and the big bad wolf, but it seems as if the moral of the story has been forgotten. In Popular Science magazine, I have seen an advertisement for the "Monolithic Dome." The ad reads that it is a super-strong, insulated, steel reinforced concrete building that is energy efficient and DISASTER RESISTANT. It would be a wonderful legacy if your administration changed the face of the gulf coast and started a trend of building monolithic dome homes. The Super Dome suffered minor damage but proved the design of the structure is what is needed in that area. For more info, the company is located in Texas. There number is 800-608-0001, or go to www.monolithicdome.com. I remember my father telling me, “There is nothing better than an idea whose time has come." The time is right for an area that was totally devastated. It's now or wait for the big bad wolf to huff and puff again another day.
Len Johnson
Oh I agree 100%! I think the Annunaki were an advanced alien species that came down and genetically created man. Their workforce, the Igigi rebelled and Enki was tasked with creating a workforce, the Adamu or Adapa. It's all there in the old tablets and cylinder seals. I have a hard time believing in a long orbit planet X, or Nibiru, but the rest of it seems plausible, or at least much more believable than any religion. I call them Sumerian "myths" simply because the religious fanatics go ape when you refer to them as "historical documents". Regardless, this is my "belief", based on a plethora of archaeological and historical evidence, but still a belief. So you won't catch me ever calling this belief "fact", as so many of the religious community try with their own beliefs.
I'm disappointing in how selfishly you view the president and republicans. You take a swipe at Romney by saying you are relieved a president was elected that supported public funding for anything... You are ignorant to think Obama is the better choice just because he supports funding whatever the program is you support. Bottom line is, just because Romney doesn't support funding everything under the moon, doesn't mean he hates you or science. The money has to come from somewhere, and USA doesn't happen to have any money. Everybody isn't going to get what they want!! I didn't vote based on what Romney could do for me tomorrow, I voted based on what he is going to do for my kids and grandkids. Selfish voters that vote for the guy that promises them ice cream tomorrow is what is wrong with America.
"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."-- Winston Churchill "
@syfyguy @Robot
I like how we just transitioned a political discussion into one on ancient aliens lol
You guys ever hear of a place in South America called Puma Punku?
@b.wayne89
"Democracy is the worst form of government, EXCEPT for all the others that have been tried,"
- Winston Churchill
"You are a complete and total tool,"
- kungfujustice
Oh yeah, Puma Punku was built by aliens! Lol! Maybe. It's pretty amazing the accuracy of their construction methods, and how they were able to do things we can hardly do today with their supposedly rudimentary tools. I think the segway into the Anunnaki came from a post I made on another article. I was a bit confused at first when Robot mentioned it, but I'm always willing to talk about some ancient aliens!
And yeah, b.wayne is a tool. This funding is what elevates humanity to the next level, and will eventually save us. Romney's ideas of increasing oil and gas production are not only extremely short-term fixes, but are extremely dangerous to the environment. We've got to be smarter in what we do, and the Democrats understand this. Making jobs now at the expense of the planet's future is what is extremely selfish, and is the kind of thinking that has given us the vast environmental devastation we see today. I'm all for creating jobs, but not at the cost of destroying our future.
(1) Climate change - I thought that science people were smart, but aparently they never bothered to take rhetoric. If CO2 is your concern, great - but you know man-made climate change is a minefield of unprovens that opposers will grab on to.
Rather than insisting that everyone must believe you because YOU ARE SCIENCE - realize that science is not about your ego or the worship of you, but about the benefit of mankind.
If environmentalism is put into the perspective of conserving natural resources, keeping the environment as clean as possible, and moving from non-renewable to renewable resources for long term economic gains the EVERYONE can get behind it.
So long as you scream about "the sky is falling," you will have detractors. I know it seems like the extreamism is needed to create drastic changes, but remember that whispers are listened for and shouts are ignored.
(2) Drones are going to be advanced. If you dislike the shadow wars (prefering open wars), you voted for the wrong party. If you wanted no wars, you would have had to write in a candidtate.
(3) Net Neutrality was already upheld in congress - not really a presidental issue.
(4) Scientific Research - was cut under this Administration, and is likely to be further cut due to the fiscal cliff. If you wanted someone who was going to put money into reseach, Newt Gingrich was your man.
(5) Space Exploration - see scientific research above, cut by this Administration, future cuts assured, Gingrich was the only one likely to change that (so much for Reps being the anti-science party).
(6)Patent Reform - could use work which neither candidate was likely to take on. Unless it becomes a major issue (and with Apple/Samsung done that is unlikely) - neither candidate would have been likely to touch it. A nice thought, though.
(7) Sleep - this administration has encouraged more people to stay home and sleep rather than get out and work hard than any other. With four more years of work increasing that part of the Dem's base, I'm sure the average sleep of Americans will increase (well, maybe not, since I will need a second job to pay for all the tax increases).
@Oakspar777777
Are you really a millionaire or do you just not know anything about Obama's actual tax plans?
Climate change is just that. Climate change. How much humans actually contribute to climate change is where the discussion needs to be. Not the “sky is falling” mantra of people like David Suzuki and Al Gore, but real discussion. The United States can do everything Suzuki and Gore recommend and it still won't have much of an effect, if any. If human contribution to climate change is substantial, then it will take the coordinated effort of virtually every country in the industrialized world to make a difference. Yes, if – I'm a scientist and, as such, I'm skeptical of everything until it's completely proven, which the degree of human contribution to climate change is not. It's theoretical. Oh, I forgot, the third world has cattle, and cow farts are a substantial contributor, according to some. So I guess it's the entire planet. Good luck with that. I'm not saying Obama shouldn't do everything that he can to help, all I'm saying is that the reality of climate change needs to be examined from a scientific viewpoint. Right now we have the hysterical group, the deniers, and a very few real scientists who are actually studying the issue from a completely skeptical viewpoint, where real science must begin. And their skepticism must be equally applied to everything and to every viewpoint. That's the only way to get to the truth. Obama's true legacy regarding this issue can, and should, be that he gathered the skeptics and turned them loose on the problem.
I should also mention that cap-and-trade and carbon taxes are a proven complete failure everywhere they have been tried. They are old, worn out failures. Check Europe. A complete failure in several countries. Encouraging cap and trade or carbon taxation is encouraging tax increases. That's it. Behavior doesn't change due to some cap and trade deal, or due to carbon taxes. If it did, we may not be having this conversation. Or maybe we would anyway. It's hard to tell. And, as has also been proven, those taxes go where all other taxes go, straight into general revenue to fund new SUVs for government employees, who don't need them, to drive around in because they look good, and more travel by government aircraft five times the size of what is actually required, to fly around in. Trading Air Force One in on a brand, spanking new Boeing 787 carbon fiber twin engine aircraft that uses 20 percent less fuel than any aircraft of its size would be a good start, Mr. President.
syfyguy,
My Segway from your comments was to include science, evolution and how we humans began from an scientific archeology point of view and yes not religion.
Current science gets all excited to the probability of aliens in the cosmos, but if you try to include science with the past a sudden quiet hits the room.
The thing with the Sumerians history and their writings, no other culture has the same ideas prior to them. So for many this is considering less myth but a culture that was being educated from an outside source and wrote down for others to learn. The Sumerian history even explains our early solar system and how a rogue planet came into and did a billiards thing with the Earth and causes our moon and the asteroid belts, plus with the change of mass and gravity put the planets in place. Current suggested mathematical models are almost identical in description in how our Earth & moon was made.
Yea, aliens are COOL!
@robot
They dug up a clay bowl at Puma Punku with Sumerian writing on it, mainstream scientists don't talk about it all that much because they can't explain it without sounding like a conspiracy theorist.
Setting aside "who are what is responsible for climate change", Humans and or the Sun cycles, I say it's definitely happening and the major hurricane for New York and New Jersey should be a wake call to build for flooding and the future and all other coastal cities.
Still, it would be nice in a sense if it was a human induce effect, giving us a chance to slow it down.
But despite it all, it seems there is no slowing it down and we best be prepared.
I actually believe from all I have read the Sun is the culprit and we humans are just amplifying it. If we humans all stop what we are doing to cause it; it’s still going to happen.
kungfujustice,
Yea, I am skeptical about it. It could be a plant. They need to find a whole lot other Sumerian artifacts in Puma Punku I think and they haven't yet....
Dear Scientific Community! You won't have to put up with that annoying Christian Faith much longer. Soon the phrase One Nation Under God will be replaced with one world under allah. From then on you can deal with a faith that does not tolerate non believers. It will be their way or off with your heads. Think about it!
@muddybottom
Quit trolling, just because you're guy lost or you're bored doesn't mean you have to act like a douchebag.
@robot
I agree that they should finance a massive excavation of the entire site, but unfortunately it's unlikely to happen given the logistics involved and the fact that several archaeological sites around the world including some pretty extensive Mayan ruins have gone largely unmapped for centuries.
I'm a tool??? psh, yall are the ones talking aliens. And for climate change causing the latest hurricane, a little quick research shows the northeast had several way bigger hurricanes back in the 30's and 40's, I guess I didn't realize global warming was so bad. I wish we had an island for all the global warming morons to go stand on and protect so the rest of us can get something done. aliens and global warming... good greif. we can either spend a trillion dollars trying to stop something that nobody can prove exists, or we can put the money towards something useful.
@kungfujustice. Sounds to me your the douchebag troll. The truth is like a good bar of soap, it allways brings out the most undesireable scum the earth can through at us.
@b.wayne89
No one can prove it exists? Really? No one at all? Not the millions of scientists around the world that say it is a fact not a theory, not the carbon record in the Arctic ice, not the fact that both summer and winter weather is far more extreme across the board everywhere in the world for the past 3 decades than it has been since humanity began thoroughly recording weather patterns over three centuries ago, none of that proves anything?
And yes, to answer your question, you are a tool, but apparently you're also a f*cking moron as well.
kungfujustice, you are a waste of time talking to. I've got better things to do.
kungfujustice definately has a chip on his shoulder. I'll be willing to bet he belives in black holes to. Something that has never been seen yet he has faith it exists. Sound familiar christians?
About Obama: Whatever happened to winning graciously?
About beliefs:And not everyone who believes that climate change is a natural phenomena, also then must believe in creationism or that they are republican conservatives. The hypocracy is astounding around here.
About climate change: Hurricane sandy wasnt even a hurricane when it made landfall... it was a post-tropical cyclone... meaning that it was a tropical storm that left the tropics... the reason it was so destructive is because it combined with several other weather systems to create a "super storm" Not a huge hurricane. It was bound to happen sometime! But where are all the cat 4 and cat 5 hurricanes that were suppose to be the norm cuz of global warming?... that suddenly has been renamed climate change due to the fact that no one knows what the hell it is. Yeah theres climate change goin on... but I dont know whats causing it.... could be all the CO2 in the air(something that has happened before naturally in the past, tho not now) or it could be many other things...Untill someone proves it or untill we really start seeing some real extraordinary storms and weather events then I dont know what to tell ya.... worry if you must. But i'd listen to the scientist who said that climate change had nothing to do with sandy ... cuz sandy was not a large or uncommon hurricane ... it was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course, many people claim it was due to climate change but they are not scientists.
About the know it alls: Ok so now I'm gonna be called a creationist looney conservative sciencephobe cuz i had an opinion on climate change... I guess I'm a fucking moron too. This place is getting harder and harder to post opinions on without getting demonized by the "ones who know best". I mean come on people.... lets get civilized. Stop the name calling and the ridiculing.... this is suppose to be a civil science magazine where people can state their views is it not? I guess i will just keep my opinions to myself after this. You guys know it all anyways. Why keep reading? JUst lock yourselves away and be content that you have nothing more to learn. Its a shame what society has become.
About me: I guess all i can do is explain that I follow and believe many mainstream science facts and or theories but i know the difference between the two. And when it comes to theories my opinion is as valid as anyone elses. Now i will stop posting on this site because its become a real turn off for me. I leave it to all of you who know best. Have fun.
About time: I'm outta here.... peace.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
The debate about whether or not global warming is real or not is over, it's real, every scientist in the world agrees, it's real, so you can either deal with reality or reality is going to beat your f*cking head in with a tree branch, probably with one tossed through your window by the next hurricane.
The debate now needs to be about possible solutions, of which there are many to choose from, so by all means get at it, weigh in, and help decide which direction this country needs to take to reduce our impact on the environment.
But quit pretending the discussion on the validity of global warming is ongoing, it's over, and its been over for long god damn time.
Oi! This argument is absolutely ridiculous. I wish we could all put our differences aside as Republicans and Democrats and actually get somewhere for once. Sheesh.
I'm with you kungfu. It's truly amazing there are still people who believe climate change does not occur and that humans are not increasing it. This is not an "if" or a "maybe". This is the culmination of years of intense research. Yes, it is still a "theory", but it is a scientific theory, not a layman theory. I think that's probably the crux of the problem here. The ignorant don't understand that a scientific theory is not just a guess, and they think it's like when they have a theory. A scientific theory is based on facts and testable data. Relativity is a theory. Evolution is a theory. These theories have all been proven time and again. Yes, climate change is a natural process. Yes we are accelerating it. This has all been extremely well documented for quite a while, so why still all the ignorance?
Yes GGena, it is getting harder and harder to post here, but it's not like you think. The last couple of years this site has been inundated with the extremely ignorant, blatant liars, and trolls. If an article comes out about something like how a new alloy was created, we'll have three comments about how Obama is a socialist or the Democrats created the new alloy to try and poison our steel supply. You can't have a single article about the history of science without some nut creationist telling us the world is 6,000 years old and Jesus rode dinosaurs. You have morons like muddybottom who don't even know that we have seen black holes. I think they barely even read the articles, as their reading levels aren't really that high, and just see the title and think, "hey, this is something I can troll on". I implore them to go back to reading Seventeen Magazine or Diary of a Wimpy Kid or any other literature that is more geared to their mentality, and leave science to people who actually understand it. If you're here to honestly learn, then keep your moronic beliefs to yourself. You learn more by listening than speaking, and continually bashing proven science only makes you look as stupid as you are.
And the reason why so many of us who actually are in the scientific community speak often of aliens, is that with the potential for billions upon billions of planets out there, it is highly probably there is intelligent life on at least one of them. But this is not a scientific theory, it is simply an educated guess, what most of the trolls believe evolution and climate change is.
What IS fact is that our earliest civilization spoke often of "children of the stars" and "those from above". They were not talking about gods, but physical beings that ate, slept, and had sex. What also is a fact is that this early civilization created the zodiac, even though many of the constellations were never even visible from their location. They knew all about the planets thousands of years before scientists did. What also is FACT is that almost all the world's major religions are based on these Sumerian writings, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. That knowledge is suppressed for most of the religious community, but by doing minimal research you will see the same stories you've heard in church, only the names are different, there were many "gods", and they weren't actually gods at all. The story of Utnapishtim is almost a carbon-copy of the story of Noah, only there were many aliens, not just "god", and it was Enki who decided to try and save man, while the others on the council known as the "Elohim" wanted to let man be destroyed. Enki morphed into "Ea", and lived in "Ea-den". Later his name morphed into Yam, then YHVH, then Yahweh, the Jehovah. He was always a favorite of humanity, and became the patron of the city of Ur, where Abram/Abraham was from. This, like climate change and evolution are based on solid evidence that everyone has access to, but the religious will never acknowledge their myths were not original, and their "god" was actually a living, breathing being. Any facts that contradict a "belief" are ridiculed or ignored by the types of people who troll this site. So many can't believe aliens exist, because they think we are the superior race according to god, and the moon landing was a hoax, so other planets can't have more advanced technology. As the guy who designed almost all the Apollo Mission exhibits in the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, I can tell you WE DID GO TO THE MOON, but the idea there are aliens out there is still just a guess, albeit an educated one.
At above - sure aliens are an educated guess. Also, anyone immigrating is called an alien - in a sense, I was conceived an alien and born Canadian. Just saying. Truly, true science is sceptical but all my university time so far has reaffirmed my belief in God, however you may want to label him or her. It's a comfortable belief to have, when everything else (money, job security, pensions, economy, politics....) is so volatile. I'm glad the Moon landing happened. I hope we land on Venus some day.
@syfyguy
This was just too funny to pass up. I'm not going to ridicule you or make fun... I'm not that way. I just want to point out a couple things. Ya just had to make me post one last time... lmao.
"These theories have all been proven time and again."
If they were proven they would not be called theories. Scientific or not... for example... the theory of relativity is still being put through rigorous testing to this day. It was only recently that i read an article right here on popsci that said something along the lines of, "and if the higgs boson fails to be detected then it puts into serious question the entire theory of quantum machanics." And thats just one of MANY MANY times I have read that einstien's theories are being put to the test.... (and yes i know that the higgs has finally been detected but that doesnt make the theory surrounding it fact yet) its BECAUSE they are still just theories that many scientists are seekin to tweek them ... or change them entirely with theories of their own... such as the unified field theory and string theory or brane theory and they are all competing theories TRYING to explain our universe and how it all works. We are still searching for that consistent theory that combines general relativity and quantum mechanics. Ya know why? cuz the two are inconsistant, they do not work together... and they should... and that tells scientists that there is somethig wrong about the theory which precludes it from being put into the fact column just yet. Even evolution, as likely as it seems may not be how things really are. The earth isnt 6000 years old and fossils do exist and tell a story... but we could be misunderstanding some little bit of something that would make evolution not quite right. Advanced aliens may laff at our theories as we laff at creationism. I believe our scientific theories are evolving every day with new discoveries. A new bit of info gets tacked on and things change.
"You have morons like muddybottom who don't even know that we have seen black holes."
I hope you mean here that we have seen the accretion disk surrounding a black hole. I have not read muddybottoms post but from this single line I'll have to agree that with our current technology we cannot see the actual singularity which is the "black hole", though we can infer its existance by its effects on its surroundings. A black whole is named thus for its property of being an invisible gravitational force. And as far as I know... we cannot see gravity even here on earth, though we can certainly feel its effects.
You see, this is what i mean about ridiculing and "knowing it all".... Sites like these are meant for discussions... not name calling... not the belittling of ones opinions or knowledge or understanding. We all have our preconceptions... I dont claim to be faultless on what i think i know... but i am open to change my mind if someone corrects me. I just wish things were a bit more scientific around here and alot less highschoolish. You seem like a smart guy syfy... and we can all agree that there are theories that are pretty obviously close to the truth and others that are obviously built on superstition and old beliefs based on faith. And then there are facts. And when it comes to science fact we should be sure about it before ridiculing others. If your sure about your facts then dissagree with someone... state your facts... quote sources... But i dont see any value in calling someone ignorant. Misinformed would be my choice.
Ok... you all have a great time... I know i use to on here... not so much no more. Take care.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
to kungfujustice. True the debate is over. But the same tree limb will also bash you head in. And I agree with you that now is the time to find a solution to the polution problem. Let me just say that if it were not for scientists then we would not be facing this problem you say exists. Scientists invent or create ideas that come up with things that make our life better and easier. True? If so then science is responsible for globle warming. If not for science we would not have the technology today for finding and burning coal,oil,gasoline and all the other elements you say causes globle warming. Don't blame the populace for using the very things science came up with to make their life eaiser. Science is the reason the people of America are spoiled.
I love how the rightys try to take the high road and start calling out people for doing what they did. How many times did you say kungfu needed to stop drinking Kool-aid? You accused him of playing drinking games. You praised Mycellium who called Democrats "frighteningly stupid". With that name, you should have assumed it was Mycellium who drinks the "kool-aid". And of course I meant the accretion disk, which only has one possible cause: a black hole.
And once again, you confuse scientific theory with everyday theory. "When it comes to theory, my opinion is as valid as anyone's" you said, or something to the effect. No, it's not. Unless you actually are a scientist, then you don't have a dog in the fight. Scientific theories are not "guesses" that are up for debate by any Tom, Dick, and Harry.
Ignorance was absolutely the right word. This entire debate is about self-imposed ignorance, and people who refuse to educate themselves and instead live by belief. Those of us who are scientists are fed up with all the arm-chair no-nothings who think their belief overrides scientific facts, and is why you see more and more belligerent posts from those of us who actually know things. This is our site, not the "believer's".
@GGenua. Not so much no more? Where is your grammer? Back in high school I suppose. People who live in glass houses should not cast stones.
@syfyguy. Don't look now but your ignorance is showing! Accretion disc which has only one possible cause? Black hole? Idon't care what you call it, it still has'ent been proven and you my dear friend will never prove it in you're life time just as I will never prove there is a God in my life time.The difference is if I'm right about God then I have very little invested. Where will you spend eternity?
Interesting how political articles receive the most comments and are populated by the most trolls. And how come in every single article, some troll has to make a vague connection to religion and start a massive flame war (I'm looking at you, Gizmowiz)? This is a science site, not a "let's start a flame-war because someone mentioned religion" site. Also, syfyguy, the "believer"'s sites are invaded by "scientists" just as much as science sites are invaded by "believers".
I personally hate either group, because they are usually extremely narrow-minded and hypocritical (I'm not saying that all scientists are like that, just some of them). Science is cold hard LOGICAL facts, not flame-war ammunition. I'd prefer it if people calmly stated the facts instead of screaming them at each other. As well, reacting to a clearly superior argument (sufficient evidence, logical inferences, etc) by saying something along the lines of "You're an idiot! I'm obviously right" without giving any proper evidence ticks me off. Science is supposed to involve PEACEFUL, OPEN-MINDED, L-O-G-I-C-A-L collaboration, not a disgusting mess of flame-wars, emotions, and trolls.
@syfyguy
I stand corrected. I was gonna argue with you again but i dont see the point. And I think you're very right about some things anyways... case in point: mubbybottoms. The grammer scholar who has no quotation marks around my quote, turns one sentance into two with his comment about my grammer, and then quotes an adage implyng I was against him, when in fact I agreed with him. You're right, he's pure genius. roflmao.
I take offense to the fact that you think I am somehow unfit to post on this site simply cuz of one or two subjects we've touched upon. I have been and always will be an avid, though novice I'll admit, science nut. Since i was a kid I've studied and learned and stargazed and read and dreamed and yeah i watch sci-fi and all about ancient aliens... perhaps in another world we could have been friends.... But... since this is your site... I leave it to your kind.
Now... one last time... I'm out.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
It sad how blind people are, Evolution is a lie that has invaded everything! and Obama might be good at supporting research, but he's terrible with our money!
Wausau Engineering and Global Leadership Academy
Mukuro, I'll tell simply why scientists are tired of this crap from the believers. Imagine if you will, you're a soldier, and you've been sent to guard a group of people. Your job is to protect these people no matter what, and you're extremely good at your job. But the people start throwing rocks at you, cussing at you, and trying to kill you. Do you think you might a bit upset with these people you've risked your life to protect?
This is what it is to be a scientist in this day and age. We bust our asses for the better part of our lives to research the big questions in order to bring humanity a greater understanding of our place in the universe, and to make mankind's life a little easier with all the gadgets and doodads people can't seem to live without. We certainly don't do it for money or fame! Instead of giving us the proper gratitude and respect we deserve, we are spit on and ridiculed. We're told the culmination of our life's work is merely "kool-aid" induced fantasy and a complete waste of time. Never mind that all those gadgets and doodads are direct results from the science they call imaginary. The very same people we are trying to help treat us like raving crackpots.
Ugh..yes black holes exist. This was proven long before we could actually see them, and the visual proof is simply confirmation of what we already knew. Of course with Heisenberg's Principle, we can never be 100% sure about anything, but 99.9999999% is pretty damn close. If you're not a scientist, and simply a student of science, then yes, you belong here. But if you're going to deny what thousands of people spend their lives studying just because you don't believe it, then you have no place anywhere near science. I'll grant you're not near as bad as the trolls like muddybottom, and seem yourself intelligent, but you have to let go of those beliefs that contradict what 90% of scientists say if you're ever going to truly learn anything.
It's funny how a difference in opinion is causing all this nonsense. I prefer calm neutrality, so syfyguy, what I believe probably doesn't matter to you or anyone else on this site. We are here to learn and beliefs are not particularly relevant to the current situation, so I'll just keep mine private. For 14costurn: I can't tell whether you're trolling and making fun of religion, or you're being serious. Either way, your comment annoys me.
This debate is not about a difference of opinion. It is about beliefs, lies, and science. You yourself Mukuro helped propagate the lies that started all this. Bagpipes started out by bashing PopSci, then kungfu gave an inappropriate response to Bagpipes idiocy, then Bagpipes tried to come back by stating a couple of conspiranoia lies. The creationists love that Schweitzer, who is a christian, claims she found soft tissue in dino fossils. But the reality is that every other scientist says it's impossible, and mysteriously no one has ever been able to duplicate her work. Then Bagpipes tried that media-spun lie about the Encode project. There report found only 20% of DNA is functional, but 80% makes better headlines. This is why Popsci does not report on this nonsense. But you backed bagpipes. Then GGenua started in with the abusive "high-school" kool-aid rant, and the rest is history. Do you folks honestly believe you can spout lies and vitriol on a SCIENCE site and not have those of intelligence call you out?
And before you troll in muddybottom, I meant "their", not "there". I'm sorry but I never was an english star. That's my wife's realm of expertise.
I can't get over this whole belief that "my opinion is just as valid as decades of science". It seems to be the common thread for all the abusive hatemongers who haunt this site. If you go to your doctor, and he says you have pneumonia, do you laugh in his face and say, "I reject your years of schooling and experience! I've just got a simple cold!" It's appalling the way these folks constantly bash the PopSci writers, and it's just down right insulting the way they think they know as much as those whose job it is to build upon centuries of cumulative knowledge. Get a real hobby people!
...wow, I went to work 5 hours ago and this conversation took kind of an interesting turn.
A few things.
@GGenua
I think I speak for everyone when I say you are brutally and viciously raping the king's english every single time you have taken to the keyboard thus far, I'm sorry but that's just a f*cking fact. Example: Everything you have written.
Also a black hole is called a black hole because it is a gravitational singularity so powerful that not even light itself can escape it, also it's not a hole, it's actually a super dense sphere.
@muddybottom
You are trolling, I know it, you know it, your mother and your sister know it, so just f*cking stop
Hey-hey-hey, what about MY money?! Howzabouta little taste of that vig over my way, huh? I can use a bit of that "tax code change" in MY pocket, too! Don't forget da Chimp!
10 dire consequences of Obama’s re-election victory
1) Huge expansion of TSA and the surveillance state
2) Expansion of secret arrests of American citizens
3) Acceleration of national debt blowout and endless fiat currency creation
4) Rapid expansion of GMOs and USDA collusion
5) Increasingly dictatorial government health care
6) Immediate surge in sales of guns and ammo
7) Accelerated erosion of the Bill of Rights and civil liberties
8) Continued destruction and looting of the U.S. economy
9) A “giant sucking sound” of employers leaving America
10) Stepped-up attacks on veterans and preppers
@kungfu
"I think I speak for everyone when I say you are brutally and viciously raping the king's english every single time you have taken to the keyboard thus far, I'm sorry but that's just a f*cking fact."
The above quote should be written as two sentances with a period after "thus far", and a comma after I'm sorry. You're as brilliant as Muddybottom. I dont know when this became an english and grammer test but common man.... get a life. This place is filled with pure genius'.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
I really enjoy PoPSCi and all the geewiz and wowzers science, popular subjects and gadgets. I enjoy the commentatories in the blog too. My mind often, naturally will focus on a key word or subject and I tend to go off on tandgets. This is just my imagination at work. I really do not try to troll. If you look hard enough, you will find an association.
Many of you commentatories above insult. You insults do not change anyone, really. You need to give that up. This is a popular blog. It really isn't science, (Its a PoPSCi blog) and people do have a right to their opinions.
I wish more people would comment! Take care. ;)
Come on Robot, you post more than anyone else on this site. Tell me honestly these articles aren't constantly filled with the right-wing hate and science denial we've seen throughout this thread. Look at the last couple of posts from quasimod or 207pc. That didn't have a damn thing to do with anything that's been said so far. Tell me Robot honestly you don't see article after article attacked by these right-wing nuts. How many articles have you read that are about things like solar radiation or planets or something else entirely unpolitical, only to have some crazy post "Obama's a socialist" or "the moon landings were a hoax and Neil Armstrong is a fraud", or "Obama's chemtrails are what creates GW". It is no different than Democrats who troll Romney's site, or Repubs that troll Obama's. The reason why so many troll a science site (yes, it's called Popular SCIENCE) is because the Democratic party is the party of science, and the rightys have to try and blast everyone they can.
Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not to state it as fact. When you have an opinion, you say things like "I believe" or "I think" or "to my knowledge". But that's not what you see here. Here, you see "climate change is a hoax and that's a FACT! All you kool-aid drinking lib baby-murderers are just lying turds!" When you state an opinion as fact that contradicts what an overwhelming majority of scientists have busted their ass to discover, then yes, you are a troll, and that's what we see here. Not "honest" debates, but hate and lies from infantile minds.
Why do these people even read PopSci if they're just going to bash the writers for every article? Because they really care little for science, and are here simply to try and spread their hate.
I read through this article which makes some very good points, but I have to say when I got down to the comments expecting intelligent conversation adding to the article - it only reinforced a bad feeling I've had about PopSci lately. PopSci is becoming a modern liberal rag and losing it's "science". It's like the Huffington Post of Science, for lefties only. PopSci's attention span also seems to be ALL over the place in recent years (did you guys and gals completely change management or something...WTH?) I have always been told that science is about SCIENCE, not politics and that's what brings scientists and those interested in science together - for the good of ALL (isn't that what "liberalism" is supposed to encourage?). Wow guess all those hundreds of science teachers and professors I studied with all my years in school, from both sides of the political aisle, were ALL wrong about science being unifying. I guess it takes a self-centered flaming liberal like Kung Fu Panda (kungfujustice) to turn an article about an "open letter" into a political war complete with namecalling and other condescending arrogance. And yes, YOU threw the first punch, completely unwarranted "kungfu", you come across like another brain-dead Internet troll trying to pretend you are "liberal". Only a depraved moron would call or present themselves as "liberal" and then behave the way you have here. The "liberals" I personally knew, having grown up in the 70's, were open-minded, peaceful, firm in their beliefs, but at the same time open to ideas and communication (yin-yang, apparently something you don't seem to understand in spite of your Chinese-influenced username?) Now all we have are people who falsely call themselves or come off as "liberal", but go around telling EVERYBODY who doesn't agree with them how stupid they are (licking eyelids or tears - really?), or threatening them (I suppose, kungfu, that you'd even go so far as to believe that the death threats against Romney and his wife, or any politician, or especially anyone who doesn't agree with far left politics...are ok?). And sure, congratulations on re-electing Obama, you are now finishing off the extremist left experiment that will only end by replacing corporate greed with government greed and the false "green" agenda (and YES it IS an agenda because there are too many people in power and positions of influence who would use it for their own benefit - especially your likely hero Al Gore). It didn't work for the USSR, isn't working for the E.U., China has even abandoned the far left Communist hard-core idealism. So anyone who thinks that "government-backed" everything is a good idea, remember WHO is paying for that. And no, they may not even agree with you politically, but they work hard and pay taxes...they're called Americans. If extremist political overtones and views are going to be what defines you now Popular Science, I am cancelling my subscriptions - both print and electronic (just got the renewal letter the other day - which I am now discarding).
syfyguy,
I like when people offer different and yes even abstract points of view. Sure lots of conspiracies fly about and they can be wrong, but there is usually something to learn as well. What you do not believe sometimes people, departments and governments lie to you on occasion?
I enjoy when the facts are checked from an outside source and even doubted. It actually gives better crediability to the orginal science.
Those of us on the right are not opposed to science, in fact, we tend to love it. Observation, measurment, detail, record, and the rules, law, and order behind creation appeal directly to the conservative mindset. Now, that tends to be "hard science" rather than "speculative science," but we have been known to enjoy our science ficition as well.
It is not the balance of a chemical equasion or the programming of a computer that divide.
Using technology to spread culture? That seems like a liberal idea - but liberals hate when that culture conflicts with their own. They will defend porn to the death, but think that people should be protected from religious ideals. That causes conflict.
If you show the right the change in average temperatures over a length of time, they won't deny the science (the measured temperatures). They will even be happy to speculate and discuss on the possible reasons why. It is the dogmatist who says "We BELIEVE the cause is THIS, and since we are scientist, our beliefs are SCIENCE!"
Consensus opinion is NOT science, the measurements are.
Those who opposed Copernicus, Galileo, and others with arguments like "the world is the center of the universe" and "the world is flat" used the arguement "because everyone who is a scientist agrees with us that it is so." The person who stuck to the measurement, was ridiculed by the scientific establishment, and turned out to be correct (history is repleat with those who were quacks as well), advanced science.
Thus, CC happens, GW may be happening, man might be causing it - but to state it all as dogma is bad science.
As I said before, no one has a problem with resource conservation and a cleaner environment, so why not drop the dogma and put the energy into actual solutions.
About the letter.
Obama didn’t campaign on “climate change” because it is not real. He might as well have campaigned on Leprechauns or something LOL.
As far as funding everything; America is running a 16 trillion dollar dept right now. They will not be able to fund anything unless they fix this problem. With over 47 MILLION people on foodstamps, I think job creation should be at the front of Barry’s list. Well go ahead Barry, you are going on into your 5th the 5th year of your term, can’t blame GWB for everything.
http://www.usdebtclock.org/
I agree with keeping the internet free and cheap.
I agree with patent reform.
Obama ends EVERY SPEECH with “God Bless America” so Kungfupanda, please realize conservatives and God fearing people hold most of the sway in this country.
I've really let this conversation get away from me, I severely dislike GGenua and b.wayne89 for several reasons and that's now coming out in my writing, so instead of continuing the conversation I started a back and forth f*ck you match, so in this case I am the troll and I apologize.
@aldrons last hope
If climate change isn't real then get me one single credible scientist to back that statement up, seriously one peer reviewed article published in any major science publication in the past 5 years saying it isn't, just one, but since that article doesn't exist quit spouting bullsh*t just to make yourself feel better, this is Popular Science not FOX News although one thing I like about FOX News it always gives everyone's crazy uncle something to talk about around Thanksgiving time.
As far as conservatives holding sway in this country. Your party just ran the most negative, evil, lie filled campaign this country has ever seen and you got your asses handed to you. In the Presidency. In the Senate. And in the House of Representatives. The country has spoken and ignorant jack asses like you are the past, you're dinosaurs and you're going extinct, and so long as you continue to spew insane bullsh*t while your opponents offer real and credible plans for creating a better future, I don't see that changing.
@crw1969
I actually like the movie Kungfu Panda, and am honored to be compared to Jack Black's furry cuddly ass kicking machine.
And yes, I'll agree that I've been acting like an a$$hole, but only because ridiculous right wingers who spout crap with absolutely no facts to back it up, such as yourself, tend to bring it out of me.
Say what you want about me but everything I've written, minus comments about people's intelligence I can back up with actual honest to God facts.
And as hard as it will be for you to believe I'm not actually a Liberal, I'm a registered independent, it just seems like I'm liberal because I like most of the country (see election results) believe that every idea offered up by the right over the past decade has been so batsh*t insane as to be almost guranteed to run our country into the ground should by some stroke of ridiculous terrible misfortune they ever be implemented.
@crw1968
Cancel your subscription if you really want to, but just know you're doing it because some a$$hole (Yours Truly) posted some opinions on a message board you didn't agree with, and instead of being an adult, you're acting like Cartman from South Park and shouting "Screw you guys! I'm going home!" so as you hit the cancel button on that subscription, think about the point you're trying to make versus the point you're actually making.
It is truly amazing the complete and total blindness rightys suffer from. No, kungfu did not throw the first punch, Bagpipes did. Yes, kungfu's response was inappropriate, but it is the result of constant daily ridiculousness vomited up by the conservatives who troll this site. Why do you hatemongers even read Popsci if all you're going to do is bash the writers? I've had a subscription to Popsci for almost two decades now, and I'm sorry, but Popsci has ALWAYS supported the Democrats. Once again, this is because it is Republicans who consistently say science is fake when it doesn't agree with their agenda. "What? Decades of research and 90% of the scientific community say something I don't want to hear, so I reject their reality!"
Sure science can be wrong. That is one of the beauties of it. It is ever evolving, and true scientists are often thrilled to be proven wrong. But science is proven wrong by MORE SCIENCE. The trend nowadays is to prove science wrong by OPINION. This is not only an insult to science, but an insult to intelligence. We haven't seen this kind of blind ignorance and denial of science since the dark ages, and that is where we are heading.
I started off as a nuclear physicist, as if the Bush era murder of the word "nukular" wasn't bad enough, I constantly had people telling me "you know carbon dating is a lie right? Did you read about that fishing rod they found embedded in a supposedly million-year-old rock?" Forget that they daily enjoy their nuclear power based on calculations that would not work without a well-established rate of nuclear decay. Once my grants played out, I went with one of my other degrees, industrial design, and started designing exhibits for science museums. I still keep a lab at home, but I couldn't stand the growing ignorance and disdain people have for science. As I worked for years on exhibits for the Apollo Missions, I constantly had people asking me "how do you sleep at night knowing you're lying to people about the moon landings?" When I did an exhibit on Pompei for the Smithsonian, I even had a christian fanatic come up to me and say "you know god destroyed them for their wickedness, right?". Forget they lived beneath an active volcano!
Yes Robot, governments lie, and so do scientists. Case and point Schweitzer as I mentioned before. Lying in scientific papers are growing at an alarming rate. These papers that lie are almost always some creationist trying to prove the Earth is young, or fabricating evidence to disprove evolution. But they're identified as lies almost immediately, as part of science is that other scientists have to be able to recreate results, and no "creationist scientist" has ever had their results recreated. 90% of the scientific community agrees humans are increasing climate change, both liberals and conservatives. This is a FACT. So why in the world do so many people think their opinion should override these people whose job it is to know?
But it's your right to say "I don't believe in climate change". The problem is that's not how people approach it. These nuts say, "climate change is a liberal lie! You guys need to take off the rose glasses and stop drinking kool-aid!". This is not debate or science. This is ignorance and hate.
And crw1969, you're certainly typical of the kind of idiots I'm talking about. You criticize others for name-calling by calling them self-centered flaming liberal? The only people you're fooling into thinking you're an intellectual or impartial are the very people who don't have the decency to think for themselves. I can't imagine the horror it must be to live in the tiny bubble of conspiracy theories and supposed mass scientific fraud you live in, but I sure wish you'd stay there, and quit infecting the rest of humanity with your mental illness.
Kungpoo, you are the quintessential moron. You dont like me? You dont like Bwayne? You dont even know me! But i am not suprised. This is what close minded people do. If you dont agree with them then they dont like you. Fuckin 2 year old moron. I usually am pretty tolerant of stupidity but your kind just ticks me off. You think you know every damn thing and any one else's facts and opinions bother you so much that you dont like them personally. Grow the fuck up.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
I'm going to be bluntly honest with all of you: ALL I WANT IS NEUTRALITY! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR!?
syfyguy, just because I agree with bagpipes100 on some things doesn't mean I agree with everything. Also, if the "soft tissue found" article is not valid as science, neither is the article about the republican making a false assumption that rape causes fewer pregnancies. That article is even LESS relevant to science than the soft-tissue one is. Still, that was published. What I was trying to say in that comment was more like this: "Seriously, PopSci? Something remotely interesting happens and you'd rather report on politics?" The reason why I didn't elaborate further was because I was typing on my dysfunctional tablet. All I'm asking from everyone is that please, just leave out all of your beliefs! I read the comment section to gain more insight on a particular topic, not to scroll through lines of flame-war battles. LEAVE YOUR PERSONAL BELIEFS OFF THE COMMENTS!!! There are two ways to end a flame war: One, someone side wins. This is extremely unlikely. Two, nobody starts a flame war in the first place. That's a more preferable option.
As long as one political side stands by science and the other denies it, politics will always be part of science. It is political science after all. In fact the contributing writers of the article are probably saying,"we've got the typical children who continuously bash all our articles no matter what they're about, but 104 comments so far and some good science to boot! Great job! We wonder if president Obama will read this and see why it's so important to promote science and cure this ignorance pandemic."
And Mukuro, come on dude. Todd Akin is on the House SCIENCE committee. He is a public representative who is supposed to be a caretaker of science, but publicly pronounces false science to meet his own agenda. You better believe that's important to the scientific community, and it certainly is "popular".
@GGenua
I seriously doubt anyone is still reading this thread, but since you addressed it I'll tell you exactly why I don't like you. It's not your opinions, although you are factually wrong on most of them, I can deal with it when someone disagrees with me, what I have a harder time swallowing is your overall personality.
You are snide, arrogant, and based on the sheer amount of self love you included in your post on banking regulations (very little of which was accurate by the way, and zero of which was coherent) a text book narcissist.
And finally when you got done ranting your bullshit, you had the audacity to call me uninformed when 90% of your "facts" is regurgitated bullshit from FOX News, who had you done any independent research of your own you would know gets all of their facts wrong on a minute by minute basis. And that's not just me saying shit as a "liberal" there are dozens of independent surveys every year that grade all the networks on neutrality and fact checking and FOX News fails in every single f*cking category.
In short I don't like you not because you have a differing opinion than me, an opinion I fully recognize you're entitled to, I don't like you because you're a f*cking nimrod.
Okay, reread that and it was pretty harsh, even for me, clearly this discussion has got me more than a little hot and bothered, please everyone, just ignore the asshole in the room.
@Kungfu
Ya know what man.... youre a real winner. A perfect gentleman... no one even noticed what an asshole you are cuz you apologized so elagantly. Combined with your endless factual knowedge and clairvoyance.... who wouldnt wanna be just like you? You win man.... your so humble and reasonable I cant help but let you win this one out of sheer respect. See mukuro? somebody wins sometimes! Dont worry kungfu... I was leavin' anyways.
Today's magic is tomorrow's technology.
I came to renew a subscription. Never mind.
gil4,
Ummmm, hey little buddy.... just to let you know, the popsci website, blog and your login is free. You can choose to focus elsewhere, but you cannot close a free subscription sir, lol.
Perhaps you can choose to be extremely annoying and be blocked, but I do not encourage such act and I do look forward to your future comments.
@KungpooPanda, this isn’t HP, so please try to keep your arguments civil. I know this is hard for a liberal to do, because you are waiting for your Obamaphone. LOL
Here is a list of very reputable scientists, including PHD’s and NASA scientists that do not believe in the Global Warming scam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scientists_opposing_the_mainstream_scientific_assessment_of_global_warming
There are literally 100’s of peer reviewed papers from these people. But main stream science ignores this. Please remember that main stream science is funded by political entities. This fake science fits their agenda. They want to use it to impose a carbon tax and restrict people’s liberties. So you need to go back and stop listening to the ads in your Obamaphone.
Like I said you can’t answer me. God fearing people hold the sway in this country. Why does Barry end his speech “God Bless America”?? He has to pay us lip service, because if he didn’t he would be out on his butt so fast. You are just a fringe lefty. You have no understanding of the real issues. Stop being a Feminazi, stop trying to control everyone.
I would suggest reading “Emperor’s New Clothes”. This is the climate change alarmist mindset in a nutshell :)
Also again, please clean up your posts, this site doesn’t have feminazi censors like HP, we have managed to keep this forum civilized, so please learn to think and speak with civility or go back to HP
Wow, "please try to keep it civil, you feminazi with fake science and free Obamaphones". Do right-wing hatemongers even read their own posts? Do they even know the free Obamaphone bit is a complete hoax and they look like retards every time they mention it? Do they not understand how stupid they look every time they try to cite a small list of scientists who disagree with mainstream science? We know there are some scientists who disagree. The operative word here is SOME, while 90% of scientists believe the opposite. There are also some crackpots who call themselves scientists who believe the world is only 6,000 years old, and that dinosaurs and man existed side-by-side. The majority of the scientific world laughs at these people, yet right-wingers hold them up as their smoking gun. How silly you folks must feel!
Obamaphone isn’t a hoax. It was a real person (typical dumbed down liberal) who was praising Obama for giving her a free phone. So check your facts syfyguy.
I gave my proof, and you can’t refute it. These scientists are prominent scientists at the top of their fields. I can guarantee they have better credentials that you. They have weighed in, and Climate Change is not manmade. So give it a rest already. Also there IS proof of man and dinosaur living side by side. More proof of that than and “missing link” So again get your facts straight.
Fossilized human foot prints were found in strata millions of years old. But this discovery doesn’t fit with the fake science that is being promoted nowadays.
President Reagan making a speech at the UNITED nations was spoke we need a common problem for the entire World to unite in and they all our other problems and conflicts would become small and obsolete. Hence with have the out of control deficit and the worlds countries have their deficits and we have the world global warming.
If you divide our 16 trillion debts and USA people of 320 million\including the babies, the amount each person owes is absurd, impossible for each person to pay. Or in other words we are bankrupt as a nation and once the rest of the other countries come to the same level and new world currency will come into effect\control, each person will be monitored via NSA and similar organizations around the world.
The fact of the manner, it is illegal for any person in the USA to be so far in debt by any one person or organization. It’s a type of slavery\ debt servitude. But because our law makers make the laws, they are ignoring this and want the NEW World currency.
Presidents Reagans wish and those who support is playing out, lol. ;)
Oh, the sun's energy does cycle wand does cause global warming and yes us humans with the industrial revolution are amplifying it too. This world problem works nicely with the world leaders who want one government and one currency and are taking advantage of it as well, being it a common world problem.
Hahahaha! "I gave my proof, and you can't refute it"! Hahaha! Do you think if you say that, it makes it true? Maybe a woman did praise Obama for giving her a free phone, but it wasn't Obama that gave it to her. It's the phone companies that give those out, not Obama. Check your facts moron. And seriously, are you going to try and "prove" global warming isn't influenced by humans because you list 28 scientists from wiki who don't agree, when hundreds of others do? Check your facts moron. More people believed David Koresh was Jesus than believe GW isn't accelerated by humans. The human footprint you're trying to lie about was of homo ergaster, that did live millions of years ago. Thanks for pointing that find out though, as it goes more to prove evolution than anything. You conspiranutbags show us time and again how completely unethical you are by trying to blast lies that try and conform to your agenda. REAL scientists like myself publish paper after paper showing how ignorant folks like you are, but you just keep on trying! Stop making yourself look so ignorant and get a hobby you might be good at, like finger painting.
Since Aldron thinks wiki is a "definitive" source, here is a list of climate scientists. These are the people who spend their lives actually studying climate change.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_climate_scientists
You won't see a single one of their names on the list of people against human influence in GW. You'll also note that almost all of the people Aldron listed are professors, who rarely do enough research to really know anything. You'll also see a politician or two on Aldron's list.
So Aldron, you can take the word of a few professors, but you show your vast ignorance by siding with them over the overwhelming majority of the scientific community.
This is really a debate I will stay out of. I am prepared to lower myself, but not that low.
