If PopSci had awarded a “Best American Ever” prize in 1927, Thomas Jefferson would have been the clear winner. Yeah, Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and led the United States as its third president. But, more awesomely, he invented swivel chairs, sod-turning plows, the U.S. patent system and fold-down buggy tops.
