Duly noted.

Hmmm. A well thought out and rational argument. Kudos!

Seriously, couldn't you have provided at least one reason?

Wow. That really makes me want to go start a street riot

I'm dousing a burning couch in gasoline right now. After I get a good blaze going I'm gonna roast some marshmallows.

The 1000 share limit does put an unrealistic cap on our potential risk and/or gain. If I were investing in the real stock market there would be nothing to stop me from putting all my money into a risky stock on the hopes that it would payoff big.

The limit does have its advantages, it protects investors from instability and error in the market. Those of us who had money tied up in STS122, imagine if you had been able to dump all of your free cash into that stock, only to have your funds frozen for weeks.

While the cap does limit our potential for catastrophic loss, it really does more to limit potential growth. There have been several occasions when I would have dumped substantially more than the limit into a particular stock. Getting rid of the cap (or at least raising it to something like 5,000-10,000 shares) would create a more fluid market and allow traders to maximize their growth potential.

It would also create huge disparities between the 'rich' and the 'poor'.

Just take this simple example:

The announcement for Hulu was made a number of hours before the stock was halted. What if I could purchase 100,000 shares on a guaranteed proposition and make appx $2.8MM on one trade? How could anyone catch up to the top traders at that point?

How can anyone catch up to the top traders as it is now?

Also a good question....

But it will be flat-out impossible if they can make over 1MM in a single trade.

I actually think it will allow for those traders in the middle of the pack to gain ranks even faster than they are able to now. For example if, as a smaller trader, I want to short a stock valued at $13 but I have $30000 in cash I am limited in the amount of money I can make on that stock. If there was no cap I would be able to make more than twice the money I could under the current system.

While it is true that big traders will be able to make money faster they will also be able to lose it faster as well. For a big trader betting on an IPO at $50 per share means that even if the stock goes the other way they are only out $50,000, pocket chance to traders with net worth's in the $3 million plus range. However if they are allowed to risk more on a transaction they will also take the chance of losing more.

Allowing traders to put all (or at least more of) their eggs in one basket has definite advantages and disadvantages, however I have a feeling that it will allow smart traders to take better advantage of the opportunities available to them. One other thing to keep in mind is that the top traders are there for a reason, whether they keep closer track of the markets, do more personal and/or in-depth research, or just have a better gut instinct for the market. Lifting the cap won't change the methods or reasons people buy or sell certain stocks, it will just allow for a more natural flow of capital.

I can see how removing limits might allow players to gain spots and therefor level the playing field a little bit more. It could allow a "wise" player who gets a hot tip could stand to make a lot more than a rich player who misses that same stock tip. They would have to change how the market moves, one person, a multi-millionaire, could move a stock on their own. It would be very risky for the admins to make such a grand move. I bet they won't do it until PopSci adds more resources to the PPX.

Now, I know this doesn't apply to too many people, maybe 5 or so, but there are some who own all of the stocks and therefor have very little to do but watch the moving stocks and just hold on to the cash. I too, will be there soon, maybe by April or so.

Allowing people to buy more of any given stock causes other problems in the market place unless other things are changed, and although it may actually increase a players ability to gain (the advantage is still with the rich) it actually would reduce the already dismal predictive ability of this market.

i would agree with with a lack of a cap that the rich would benefit overly. Also the predictive ability of the exchange would be deminished. I would support raising the cap to 5000 shares to allow for greater growth. Another problem with no cap is a rich person could artiffically cause growth that does not refflect the popular opinion. the exchange engine would have to be reworked to dissalow this; ultimately creating an economy that is not a free market

Alright Milkweed get that mob going, lets run out into the street.

And if there were going to be a share limit Admin (I LOVE YOU ALL DONT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY) would have to halt earlier to prevent people from buying 10000 shares AS SOON AS the stock is going too pay out long or short.

Don't you think that the police would think us a bit odd for starting a riot over a "1000 share limit?" And if there is a limit rise (which, for the record, I am against) your idea would be necessary. Imagine if someone could have gotten 10,000 shares of ENDV at $65-ish after it had launched. That would be a bad situation.

just my two cents. i believe that a 5000 shara limit would greatly help the fluidity of the market. for those who think that the poor people would have no chance of caching up to the rich, i am a shining example of the opposite. i am a very low risk trader that never really goes down but always advances slowly. the same principles would apply to those with a larger trading cap.

I think that the limit should be relaxed. Perhaps limit each trader to increasing their holding no more than 1000/day (but allow them to buy/short another 1000 tomorrow). Also have a daily sell/cover limit - but it should be larger. There should still be a limit to prevent any one player from owning too large a percentage of shares (perhaps a 1% limit) or investing too large a percentage of their portfolio on one stock (perhaps 10% of total shares or value held).

IPO proposal: LIMIT
This stock will pay out at POP$ 100 if, by February 30, 2009, the admins at PPX remove the 1000 share limitation.

You realize, of course, that if we bump the limit up to 10,000, everyone will be 10 times richer/poorer(approximately speaking), and no one would have THAT much of an advantage over anyone else?

Just go to PPXchat, people.

Ok but can I buy more then 1000 shares of IPO LIMIT?

And the people that cover there short for the extra money on 5,000 stares will only make the market move more unexpectedly
