Based on the latest predictions, It will tie with Wii at the end of this year but completely beating out the Xbox and there is one more year left to go. PS2 will stay strong and have strong sales until early 2009. So it could be a real tossup as to who really wins at the end of the 4th quarter of 2009, Wii or PS3 on a Worldwide Sales.
Sorry, I do not have time to find that link but I will try to find it and post it later when i have more free time for the search of the prediction of PS3

Now that Blueray wins the format war, the PS3 sale should increase as well. This is because compare to the current Blueray players on the market, the price of a Blueray player cost the same as the cheapest PS3 console. Who wouldn't want to pay the same price for a game console that doubles as a Blueray player for the price of a stand-alone Blueray player?

People who have no intention of ever playing a video game?

I've got to laugh, so I pull up this PS3WIN post and what's being advertised on the right hand side of the window? An "Ads by Google" Xbox Game Console ad. :-)

IM just saying that the Wii has so many great games out there for casual gamers that it is attracting a huge market and fanbase. The Wii has been out for what, 1 year and a few month and has been kicking butt. THe PS3 has been out for just as long and will probobly flop by 2009. Wii will win.

wii sucks x box and ps3 are best they have more war games and they only need 1 controller no 7

Let's NOT turn this into a Wii v. xbox 306 v. PS3 thread. Please, you can do that somewhere else, like on a gamer's forum. Not here.

The failure of HDDVD has certainly cause me to question my previous belief that the ps3 doesnt have a chance. As chrisitux has said this one is a toss up

Well, the market reflects your views. I refuse to hold this stock because it just keeps bouncing merrily along!

milk weed stay out of other peoples biusness what are you a chat monitore

Tell you what, slovicks. You can create your own thread, called something like "ps3 v xbox 360 v wii witch i think sucks" and if you want, you can discuss it to your heart's content and use all the misspellings. However, this thread is about the stock PS3WINS, so we really don't discuss all the heavy-gamer's stuff. Also, your flaming of msholdnct (sp?) was uncalled for, random, and really pissed off some of the other users. If you haven't read some of the posts replying to yours, I suggest that you read them, because that will really take the wind out of your sails.

And I'm the closest thing to a "chat monitore" that the PPX has

If he was going to misspell monitor, he could at least have made a bad joke out of it, like "you're a real monibore" ha, ha, ha. Seriously, this guy's getting obnoxious.

14 comments later, and no one had an answer for the questions in my original post :)

Wow. Your first actually useful post. Good job. And while we're on the subject of free speech, if I get kicked off for flaming this guy can I tell the admins that they are infringing my freedom of speech?

weed milk lets just end this im getting sick of it u idiotic pigeon

Hey, slovicks. We're getting sick of you too, but most of us don't call you names.

Flaming other users isn't appropriate, regardless of the situation. Louis, that goes for you too. All flaming does is show the rest of the forum your level of immaturity.

As for the freedom of speech issue... if flaming another user is so important to you, slovicks, get a geocities website and do it there. These forums were created for a CIVILIZED exchange of ideas. If you can't be civilized, feel free to express your opinion elsewhere.

I'm sorry, Mike.

Whoa I didnt think they let kids from Nazi camp post in the forums.

I'm not a kid, nor am I from a Nazi camp.

Louis, your offense wasn't against me, so I have no grudge against you.

Anyway, with slovicks gone the flames should die down.

Warrior wasn't talking about you, Mike, and there are no bad feelings between the two of us.

Yeah was talking about that slovicks guy sorry m.

Oops, my bad. (nuances and tones are so hard to read over the internet sometimes)

Apparently, upcomming PS3 firmware upgrade will make it the first BD Live player. Not really sure what the big deal about that is, but there are two titles being released in April that will take advantage of the Live features (The 6th Day and Walk Hard--The Dewey Cox Story). Here's the link to the article:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,143641/article.html

It seems to me that the youth of the population is into Wii, and the adults are split between Xbox 360 and PS3. I believe the PS3 is the best of all three, but, as history as shown, that doesn't neccessarily mean it's going to win even if my beliefs are correct.

And the seniors are for the Wii.

Well with Blu-Ray being victorious over HD-DVD and Microsoft not planing on adding a Blu-Ray player to the X-Box 360 (they are probably waiting until what ever next version of X-Box they make comes out and by then Blu-Ray players should be almost dime-a-dusin), I think the PS3 has a really good chance of being the champion.

i doubt that people will buy a PS3 just because it has blu-Ray most bluray players are much cheaper and plus the majority of the games for PS3 are also on 360 so why not buy a console thats cheaper and has better games in general? If you think a PS3 is the best themn you must also think the Macbook Air is also the best computer in the world. Its not, Both products are "Look-at-what-i-can-do" developments that are crucial for the development of future products but aren't aimed to sell well. just to attract investors

Using your own logic, since most games on the 360 are on the PS3, who in their right mind would buy both a 360 and a blu ray player or add-on when for a similar or cheaper price they can buy a PS3?

Not to mention all the proprietary games that PS3 gets that Microsoft doesn't.

coolsciencenerd>>

you obviously don't know what your talking about

"i doubt that people will buy a PS3 just because it has blu-Ray most bluray players are much cheaper and plus the majority of the games for PS3 are also on 360 so why not buy a console thats cheaper and has better games in general? "

ps3 is in fact the cheapest bluray player in the market, and many reviewers like sound and vision magazine say that the ps3 is the best sub 1500 dollar bluray player in the market. The Ps3 is the only 2.0Live profile Bluray players available today. So in fact. Why buy a more expensive, but lower quality, non 2.0live bluray player?

In the store I work at we are selling tons of PS3s to families who are buying it as both a game console and bluray player. We saw a HUGE increase in PS3 sales after Blurays victory.

Your defending of x360 is baseless, do you even know that the PS3 is consistently outselling 360 on a month to month basis, for over 6 months now? Even in the USA where people always thought xbox360 would outsell PS3 , PS3 has been outselling 360.

And trying to claim one system is better for gaming is foley. Being that PS3 has way more established AAA franchise games , and wayyyyyy more exclusive games in 2008. Take a look at this years lineups, or read some articles comparing the 3 current gen consoles 2008 2009 lineups and you will see that every major gaming publication agrees PS3's 2008 lineup kills 360s and Wiis.

Ka-Ching! Unboring gets another twenty five cents in his "paid poster" account.

Will everyone just stop debating this guy? He's a paid tout for Sony.

Well, coolsciencenerd obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. unboring is very interested in this subject and a valuable resource. Twenty five cents isn't that much.

Vulgarian, if you don't have anything to add on the threads topic, and your just here to harass me, please fck off. I think I asked you specifically in the lead off for this thread to please not post harassing comments unless you were here to add constructively to the debate.

I have a great job and make loads of money, .25 cents for the once or twice a week posts I make here is hardly worth the effort don't you think?

I think most people would agree with my previous post, Coolsciencenerd obviously did not know what he was talking about. I was just pointing out the obvious.

Everyone else seems to appreciate my posts here, how about you leave me alone. thanks.

sorry, heres the edit,

I told you in the other ps3 thread lead off

"seems like an easy long at 12 dollars a pop. Vulgarian please don't post just to harrass me. thanks man."

sooo how about I edit that statement while Im at it, Vulgarian, How about you don't harrass me or anyone else in this forum. I'm sure everyone would appreciate that.

....damn....

Vulgarian, as much as I think of you as a great poster, unboring is right. This is his area of expertise (sp?), so don't be jealous. Be useful.

Does anybody actually know the answer to ejcassel's question? I am also curious. I am assuming either and worldwide.

Kcondon, I honestly havent heard any confirmation from any admin about the wording here.

My understanding of the prop is that PS3's sales numbers for Q4 2009 need to be higher then Q4 sales of both Wii and Xbox360, not combined, but individually, and not one or the other, but both. Globally.

Now I do see that the wording can be interpreted in a few different ways, I think in cases like this we can look at what the probable case is. What would make the most sense as a prop?

I think the two options that are confusing us are, does the ps3 need to outsell 360 + Wii or 360 AND Wii. In my mind if I was writting this prop I would not say the PS3 needs to outsell the two combined sales figures of the competing consoles , simply because it seems like a really unrealistic goal. The idea of PS3 itself outselling the Wii seems unrealistic to some people.

I think the logical assumption in this case (seeing as I don't think any admin are going to jump in and rule) Is that we are not looking at PS3 beating a combined total, only the individual global sales of the other two competeing consoles. Overall they are asking, In the 4th quarter 2009 will PS3 be the console with the highest sales for that time period. Only for that time period, and on a global scale.

any admin want to rule on this please?

Microsoft is tooting its own horn again: http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200820/990/Microsoft-claims-Xbox-360-will-triumph-over-Wii-and-PS3
It says that the Xbox 360 will beat out the Wii and the PS3 is sales.

But wait!
http://www.dbtechno.com/gaming/2008/05/15/xbox-360-beats-wii-ps3-to-10-million-in-us/
Apparently the Xbox 360 has just hit 10 million units sold! The article states that "According to the latest NPD figures, the Nintendo Wii has sold 8.8 million units, with the PS3 at 4.1 million, all in the U.S."

And here's another interesting tidbit:
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/05/15/sony-losing-260-on-each-ps3-sold/1
The article states that Sony is losing $260 on every PS3 they sell! Wow!

I'm short on PS3WINS

Yes but the prop is for sales in the 4th quarter. these numbers are total units sold and the 360 has been out much longer than the wii or ps3. If you keep reading you see that quarter by quarter the wii and ps3 beat it in sales, everywhere.

"This proposition will pay off at POP$100 per share if more units of the PlayStation 3 are sold than either the Xbox 360 or the Wii in the fourth quarter of 2009...."

Have we ever gotten a clarification on just exactly what this means? I believe that was the original intent of this thread.

Consider the following conditions:

0) The PS3 outsells the neither Wii nor the XBox 360 in Q4'09

1) The PS3 outsells the Wii but not the XBox 360 in Q4'09

2) The PS3 outsells the XBox 360 but not the Wii in Q4'09

3) The PS3 outsells each of the XBox 360 and the Wii in Q4'09, but not the combined sales of the two

4) The PS3 not only outsells each of the XBox 360 and the Wii in Q4'09, but ALSO the combined sales of the two

I think everyone can agree that 0 is a pay-short, and 4 is a pay-long. I also think most people, because of the use of the word 'or' would probably agree that 3 is a pay-long.

So the question seems to be about the meaning of 'or' in interpreting outcomes 1 and 2. Does 'or' here mean that if XBox *or* Wii outsell PS3 the prop fails? Or does it mean that if PS3 outsells XBox *or* Wii the prop succeeds?

The problem is that 'or' has one meaning in logic and another in the vernacular.

I would ask the admins to comment but that seems to ensure that it never happens.

Yes the admins clarified that this was it had to beat the wii and 360 both.

OK, just so we don't think you're endorsing scenario 4 only, that means 0, 1 and 2 pay short, 3 and 4 pay long?

Or when you say "the wii and 360 both" could it mean "combined"?

also, curious where the admins published that? I don't see it in this thread, was it in the forums? Or elsewhere?

no the admins were clear it has to beat them both in sales not the addition of sales of both. 3 would payout $100

Here's another interesting article (can you tell I'm into this stock?):
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10527&Itemid=2
Apparently analysts are saying that both Microsoft and Sony are going to have to drop the prices on their consoles, as the market is saturated at the moment and their sales are miserable.

I am now long on PS3WINS. Why? If Sony drops its price more, that is just added incentive for people to go out and buy the PS3 to use as a Blu-Ray player and not as a gaming platform. Heck, I might do that myself!

But refer to the article in my above post that says that Sony is losing about $260 for every PS3 sold. They get back these losses by selling games and allowing other studios to release games for their system. If they chop the price any more, and people get them for their blu-ray, then Sony isn't getting the game money, and it stays a loss. (it does, however, get Blu-Ray money).

Therefore, the smart thing for sony to do, in my opinion, would be to release a cheaper PS3 without the Blu-ray player. They would be certain that games would be sold for the thing, and it'd be on-par with the 360, which has no Blu-ray drive (and, looking at the price of BLU360, won't anytime soon.)

I don't think that they *can* release a non-bluray PS3 since many (if not all) game disks are actually blu-ray disks. I'm trying to find explicit references to this but most just seem to say "the PlayStation 3 can play both Blu-ray game discs and Blu-ray movie discs".

http://www.gamespot.com/console-resource/ps3/?tab=faq

Okay. I don't have a gaming system, and about the most intense thing that I play is the PPX. I didn't know that. Thanks for the link.

It's nice to know the price for the PS3 will be coming down. I read an article in popmech about replacing its hard disk with a higher-capacity one and installing linux on it, and when I get my rebate check, that's what I intend to do.

Yeah, you read that right. I'm going to buy a PS3 just so I can hack it.

The real issue isn't that the Blu-ray is winning the format wars (although that will help) it is the gamers that have the real power in this.

Gamers want the best system and so far, for a hard-core or mediocre player, the XBOX 360 tends to be the system of choice since it has:
1. More games 2. Better multi-player 3. A lower price.

The Wii seems to have been dominating the casual market since it tends to be VERY user-friendly.

Where does the PS3 belong? In gamers view, I have seen the PS3 go from being hated to loved to hated.

Most of the opinion I have read and heard places the PS3 as the best gaming system without games to play on it.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS: The ps3 is good, but it won't and can't outsell the total of the 360 and wii.

Why not?

Mewyabe:

You clearly haven't read the thread up to this point. The criteria doesn't require the PS3 to outsell the combined total sales of the XBOX & Wii, just to outsell each of them.

In the effort to do that, the PS3 gets alot of the blockbuster games that they XBOX gets that the Wii does not. The PS3 has growing sales which for some time have been far ahead of XBOX sales, which have been declining for months. Remember, the PS3 does not need to sell more total units ever, just more units during Q4 of NEXT YEAR (2009). Since a larger fanbase is already installed for XBOX that also gives it a disadvatage in selling new XBOX consoles during that 3 month period, which happens more than a year from now. Additionally it will be the oldest technology of the 3 consoles by far during the criteria period.

So; too many units already installed, alot of games avail on both platforms, and already being outsold by DOUBLE more than a year in advance means that the XBOX is not a player in this.

Now, the Wii is outselling the PS3 currently, but again, it's not total units ever, just total units in Q4 2009. The Wii has the gimmick of the controller which has given it high sales with a commonly acknowledged weak lineup of games. Will the Wii's gimmick continue to keep sales up, or will the quality of current and upcoming games like GTA IV which aren't available on the Wii cause it to fall behind?

Now that you're up to speed on the correct issues behind this proposition, you need to decide whether or not the PS3 with it's upcoming lineup of blockbuster games and it's Blu-Ray player, can outsell the Wii with it's gimmick controller and pedestrian games. The time period for you to consider is not current sales, and not even the near future. The only time period this question will apply to is October through December of 2009, and just those 3 months.

@m_novotny
I have a launch 20gb PS3, with a 160Gb internal 2.5" sata installed and a 500gb external, its also networked with my pc so all my media on my laptops hdd is visible to it. I might also partition my harddrive and load linux. Do you know what the great thing is about all these hacks. They are fully supported by sony, and do not void your warrantee. The hdd changing instructions are in the manual! and the option to load a new os is in the settings.

No other platform is nearly as open and non-proprietary as the PS3.

oh and Mewyabe, XBOX360 isnt even a factor in this prop. They have been outsold by sony for quiet a long time now, like a year at this point, and even so far this year in the US (something I that suprised me so early)

Nintendo is a question mark of course. Whether they can maintain this momentum on aging already obsolete hardware. With a lack luster game lineup and not much ahead of them except for wiifit and losing out on all the multiplatform games.

Understand that Sony has amazing games lined up, for 2008 and 2009, and that with in game xmb coming as well as "home" and movie and television download services, as well as dedicated online servers for gaming and massive community website integration.

You absolutely cannot underestimate sonys commitment to the playstation brand, as well as the pure quality of the hardware, the great relationships sony has with their developers, the open nature of the platform, the proper utilization of game 3.0 principles, and the massive plans they have for their online service.

Take a look at just 3 of the amazing holiday titles.
1. Resistence 2
2. Killzone 2
3. Little Big Planet

Im making the prediction now that these games will be epic, and either Resistence 2 or LBP will be GOTY (game of the year) probably Little Big Planet

Not to mention

Motorstorm 2 Pacific Rift
Socoom
Wipeout HD
Singstar
Grand Turismo 5 Prolouge
Haze
Buzz

I almost forgot the best, Metal Gear Solid 4

PS3 has the beginning of an avalanche, the momentum will be monstrous. You can't stop it.

Another dime in the 'ol paid-poster account.
I think the Sega Dreamweaver is going to come back really soon, because the retro stuff is hep now, daddy-o! That old sega was the bee's knees!

Speaking of old school, I've had a hankering for Super Mario Bros. for a while now. SMB3 was the bomb!

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/dfc-wii-to-set-records-in-08-ps3-to-overtake-360-in-09/?biz=1&page=1

While there's no data from which to make your own conclusions, there's still some nuggets in the article:

"Two years later, DFC (Intelligence) can say with more confidence that we do not think the PlayStation 3 will be the third place system. DFC forecasts that the PS3 will overtake the Xbox 360 in 2009 and finish in a strong second place behind the Wii."

I assume this is in total console sales as we already know that the PS3 is outselling the 360 on a monthly basis.

from Broken Arrow, OK

I was browsing some game news website when I read that a lot of games for the PS3 are being cancelled by developers. I can't remember which ones exactly, but I will try to find the link. Also, there was that article about how consumers still prefer DVD or upconverted DVD to blu-ray, thanks to the costs and the fact that mainstream buyers can't tell the difference. I wonder if this will make an impact in 2009...

WOWOWOWOWOW

look at these number for last week. These numbers are Japan Only

- PS3: 75,311 up 64,455 (593.73%) HOLY SHIT 600%???
- PSP: 62,016 up 2,659 (4.29%)
- Wii: 45,564 up 925 (2.07%)
- DS Lite: 39,201 up 4,181 (11.94%)
- PS2: 7,297 up 1,018 (16.21%)
- Xbox 360: 2,163 down 117 (5.13%) xbox sux

also noteworthy PS3 outsold Wii and Xbox360 last week globally.

now maintain that on a weekly basis and repeat and this prop is sure fire. Anyways, yeah, sony is going to destroy the competitition. As Ive always said.
