I got this link from other posts and erick99's website http://www.ppxchat.com/

thank you for the response... i still need to register for a PPX account. i have a popsci account but need to register for PPX in order for your login link to work. are there any admins around working on this? i've seen other threads but no responses from admins.

-Mahlmann

You'll never see responses from admins. They don't exist anymore.

They were all replaced by mindless robots that only put out a great magazine and the from time to time...well only once after the robotic replacement they let a little robotic rabbit out to keep us unwitting humans appeased and continue to play. But let me tell you we have figured out their evil plan to take over the world by replacing all huma... HEY! WHAT! WHO ARE YO.... crash bang crash AAARRRrrrrrrr... (silence ensues as the robots drag the body of centrigma out and then replaces him with a robotic replica)... AllSystemsOnli.. err... I mean nothing to see here, all is OK. There is no robotic world dominance plane here, nope not at all. All humans, return to your computers and continue to trade... trade... continue to tra.... tr... trade..... syntax error... command not recognized... please restate... Error code ID: 10... Shutting down...

I have had great difficulty accessing my portfolio for the last several days, and have had pretty much no success on reading stock pages or trading because I keep getting this error message:

Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Too many open files in Unknown on line 0

Warning: Unknown: Failed opening '/appl/webdata/HSX/popsci/security/view.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in Unknown on line 0

I have tried the link provided above, I have gone to the PopSci home page and logged out... and logged back in... several times.

Is there a way around this?

Is anyone else having problems with this again? I didn't get this for about a week and now it's back.

HEY BILL>....

Same thing hapened to me... i had to log out and log in again..

Usually after the patch it redirected you to the portfolio... whats up with the patch...

I get the same "too many files open" message a lot at school. It drives me up the wall, but hey, I need to spend less time on the PPX anyway.

I still get access denied although I have done this procedure a million times. I am using Firefox.

Same with me, I need to register and the link didn't work because I need an account, it said the website expired...

I have to re-login many many many times each day. It is very frustrating not to be able to make a trade when I want to.

Is anybody working on this?

I know other people are having this problem also. Why are there no other recent posts about it? Could it be that people know they won't get a response? Why bother when you know the problem will not be addressed?

Try the link from www.ppxchat.com as it has a box to check if you want it to "remember you"

I have tried the link on ppxchat many times. Most of the time I get in but if I refresh my portfolio I get kicked out again.

IS ANYBODY WORKING ON THIS?

No

Nobody is working on it

(prove me wrong)

I get Access Denied 4-20 times a day, depending on solar flares and the daily rainfall total in Belarus.

(prove me wrong)

I have a Popsci account already, but i want a PPX Profile too...... how do i do that?? I will take any help available

Slim Jim, a PPX account is more trouble than it's worth. You become addicted, and you are in a bad mood when someone drags you from in front of the computer screen. You become frustrated when you hit error messages. Eventually your wife leaves you and you sit and play the PPX 24 hours a day until the utility company cuts your power because you tried to pay their last bill in a currency unknown to them.
Undeterred, you go to coffeehouses with wi-fi hot spots with your laptop until one day you suffer a heart attack from caffeine overdose (you think). An ambulance is called, but you don't have any money because you haven't held a real job in months. So they try to make you comfortable in the cafe, and sure enough, you die, but you go with a smile, because you were only THREE spots away from being in the top 100!

Anyway, to get a PPX account, send an email containing video footage of the pentagon's latest tactical missile to webuyvideofootage@china.spy, and rabbit will set up a PPX account as your reward. However, the CIA will spike your coffee with arsenic later on...

SlimJim215, to sign up for PPX go to the PPX home: http://ppx.popsci.com and look for a heading called "READY TO BET ON THE FUTURE?" it is on a red line about halfway down the page in the second column (the right column). Underneath that heading are 4 links: Sign Up | Tutorial | FAQ | Start Trading and all you need to do to sign up for PPX is click the "Sign Up" link, fill in the required fields and submit the form.

Just so you know, Louis, the CIA stopped using arsenic in 1994 and replaced it with cyanide, as it is harder to detect and death by cyanide poisoning looks almost exactly like a heart attack. This information is classified, so if anything happens, you know why.

*takes a sip of his green tea, falls out of his chair and dies*
"Doctor, what caused this man to die?"
"Looks like a heart attack."

i'd also like to add that plutonium has been added to the national arsenal, mainly for a simple reason of: Man falls over dead -> plutonium poisoning is discovered -> oooobviously the russians did it..... or did they?

I tried this on both firefox and explorer, but when I log off and log back on, I get this - "PPX Error: Session initialization failed: Member username could not be verified." HELP?!

Plutonium poisoning causes cancer. Only an extremely large dose of plutonium would cause a person to fall over dead instantly. I submit the movie "Rosewood" which was based on a true story.

Hate to burst your bubble Capt Jack Plutonium is the most regulated substance on the face of this Earth, and only countries with centrifuges can make it.

This is a painful site -- painful in just about every way possible.

Let me mention some of the things that pain me:

* The need to log off and then log on to get access;
* Painfully slow everywhere;
* A forum without conversations (that's what the "improvements" have wrought, in practice);
* Tiny type -- to make way for all the promos and ads;
* Infinite looping & other crash-inducements;
* Distracting, flashing ads;
* Slow, slow, slow site (did I mention that?);
* Portfolio is not updated regularly;
* Random portfolio updates are so infrequent as to be virtually useless;
* It's no fun -- the pain-to-fun ratio is far too high (except, perhaps for self-loathing masochists);
* My interest in technology & prediction exchanges drew me here before the site was "improved". Had I just discovered the site, I'd be gone after the first visit. I still have "hope" for a "change" -- but that hope is dissolving & my patience is wearing thin.
* The site is a portal for a technology publication – the irony is too rich for my blood.

Here, have some plutonium pellets to ease your pain...

DDG I tried clearing cookies, etc. Then logging out and in. No avail. Still get user not recognized. Tried to create account again, says I am there, but can't log on

from what i've read, this place is a crap shed. i suppose that there is no way to fix the crappy problems i've been having with the portfolio for weeks. will someone pass the plutonium tablets?

I would like to directly contact the admins and I've been searching around for a way to do so. So, could an admin please provide me with a means to contact them or if anybody knows how to please e-mail me at mason99@sympatico.ca.

This is regarding my inability to create new topics as well as to remove my previous account.

Thanks,

Last I checked, the webmaster was an admin...

Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, and click on the "Contact Us" link. The page that it links to has a link to e-mail the webmaster. If that doesn't work, I noticed there's a link to e-mail the PR person as well.

Anytime :)

I was thinking about leaving due to the lack of care from adm. After reading some of the posts (some of them are too funny), I realized that even through the bad experiences you're still here waiting for more. That's it, make some room, I'm staying. Bring on the pain.

Good for you.

NO! DON'T LISTEN TO NOVEY!
It is my personal opinion, backed up by several studies, that sticking the course is bad for you.

*** Failed to connect to database! *** Host 'nj-web1' is blocked because of many connection errors; unblock with 'mysqladmin flush-hosts'

This is the error i get every time log on to ppx.

Is this problem on my end or with the popsci servers?

Any ideas?

It's a PPX problem that started after the last "upgrade" to the system.

That problem requires an admin to do something, and they don't work on weekends. I expect it'll probably be fixed around 10:30am est on Monday.

Been nice of you to hold down the fort here msholdenct. If only people would look around a bit before posting the same questions.

BTW, is anybody else experiencing the 'forced preview comment' that I am. I can only post after previewing first.

Further proof that you actually don't have to know how to use technology, in order to publish a magazine on technology.

napkinG - I think the must preview before posting change was part of the last "upgrade".

On PPXChat, Ed (ejcassel) speculated the delayed reboot might be so they can get their tech folks working on locating and fixing the actual problem. Hopefully he's right.

I figured it was due to an update. Was wondering if it was just me or not.

Just means one more wasted click on this website.

I signed up for a new account 2 days ago.
Each time I visit PPX and try to trade, it brings me to my profile page.
I've logged in / out several times and the same issue keeps happening.

Click on this link, and see if it gets you to your portfolio:

Another one you might try is:

Whoops, the urls didn't show up as links. Copy everything starting with ppx.popsci...... to the end of the text - don't copy the white space or the >

Thanks msholdenct,

I tried ppx.popsci.com/login/index.php?redirect=true and it asked me to log in, which it would not let me do.

I tried ppx.popsci.com/portfolio/ and I was logged in.

Most links I click inside of PPX simply bring me back to my profile - I can't interact with that part of the site at all.

I am rather surprised at how poorly this site is designed, I really expected a lot more from such a big company.

Well, the times, they be a-changin'!

Is there a date that we should expect this problem to be fixed?

I am still having problems and tried this link
http://ppx.popsci.com/login/index.php?redirect=true
which did not work.

As far as I am experiencing. This problem no longer exists.

Never mind my last comment, the problem is still there.

Are we making any progress toward fixing this at all, I'm getting really tired of having to log in and out constantly!!!
I keep hearing talking about getting this fixed but I see no progress. Let me know at science404@surewest.net, or respond with a post here . Thank You, and get it fixed.
