Internships:

Popular Science hires one "free agent" intern every summer, and occasionally during the school year as well. The position is full time for roughly 12 weeks (we're flexible on exact dates) and pays $100 a week. Primary duties include research and reporting for all departments of the magazine, including the feature well, but most interns also have a chance to write a few short pieces such sidebars, news stories and Web articles. The relatively small staff and open atmosphere at PopSci expose interns to all parts of the magazine-making process (including the opportunity to sit in on most meetings), and interns are encouraged to pitch ideas and chase down their own work from editors. Ideal candidates have a passion for and some background in science and/or personal technology, as well as a real interest in magazine journalism. Prior experience helps, but is not required. Interested parties should send resume, clips and a cover letter explaining why you want to work at Popular Science (versus any other magazine) to Martha Harbison by March 15 for the summer position. (Applications for other quarters are accepted on a rolling basis.) A decision will be made by April 1.
