Engineered Bacterium Produces Alcohol Out Of Thin Air

Engineering bacteria has always held the promise of endless possibilities and it seems that a team at Harvard may have unlocked one of those possibilities: fuel.

Harvard chemist Daniel Nocera and his team engineered a bacterium that will take hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and produce from those building blocks different types of alcohol fuels, and biomass that can also be burned for energy.

Alcohol has tons of practical applications. We’re excited to learn more when Nocera’s upcoming paper appears in Science.
