Steve Jobs, indisputably the most prominent technology CEO in the world, today announced his resignation as head of Apple.
Jobs has had, to say the least, a storied history with Apple, from co-founding it in 1976, forced out in 1985 (ushering in Apple's "dark period"), and coming back in 1996 to lead the company through its most fruitful time. The iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, and continued refinement of the various Apple laptops (to the point where the company has made our favorite consumer laptop many years running) have all sprung from the brain of Jobs, seen in the press as part auteur, part despot, and all genius. Jobs has also had serious health problems in recent years, at one point taking a leave from Apple to undergo surgery for pancreatic cancer.
In a brief resignation letter, Jobs wrote:
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you."
Much more will be written about Jobs and Apple in the hours and days to come, but we'd like to say that regardless of the sniping we've done in the past, we're in awe of Jobs's contributions to the tech world. He has been a pioneer, an artist, a geek among geeks, and his work won't be forgotten. Enjoy your retirement, Steve. You've earned it.
Five amazing, clean technologies that will set us free, in this month's energy-focused issue. Also: how to build a better bomb detector, the robotic toys that are raising your children, a human catapult, the world's smallest arcade, and much more.

Steve Jobs, so long, fare well, good bye and do not let the door hit your pa-tunias on the way out....... It's time for new blood and let the Narsissitc CEO say goodbye! I can hear his fellow employees having a party, the day after he is gone!
I hate to say this, im sorry Steve Jobs but without you apple is done for within a few years
I hope so. if you wanna pay more for technology and let people make you feel smart when buying it then go with apple people who know what they are talking about build their own or go with a normal pc. I feel bad for people who buy apple but its their money they can do what they want with it.
There are tuners and there are users.... you tuners don't always have to be so hateful, and users don't have to be so godamned smug all the time either. Use what you like.
None of you have impacted the world like this guy has, and will continue to do, otherwise you'd be multi-billionaires not slinging shit on PopSci...
(new iMac 3.4 Core i7 with the 2GB video card on its way)
I'm not a tuner... to each their own, right?
At least Apple is an American company, that employs tens of thousands in the U.S., and pays taxes on its income... you can't say that for all the parts vendors who supply the tuner-crowd...
GO WAL_MART!!! Then ask yourself why manufacturing jobs went overseas....
If Tim Cook becomes CEO, I really hope he can bring as much ingenuity as Jobs. Jobs did a really good job. It always sucks to hear things like this and I'm not even the sentimental kind.
Figures the comments get flooded by some know it all PC users. Use whatever system you like and stop shoving your bias beliefs in everyone else's faces.
I used PCs my entire life and just recently switched to mac and I love it, and it was worth every penny.
Hopefully the new CEO will lead the company in a good direction. Although I do think Apple is done for without Steve...
Apple will be fine without Steve as the CEO. Tim has been largely filling in as CEO for a little while now anyway. I expect Steve will still be around and play a big and important role within Apple, just not CEO.
With the iCloud due to release in the near future and the grand idea Apple has with iTables for the future, Apple will be around for a while. They will eventually be surpassed as nobody can stay on top for forever but they have more time left.
There is a drop in the market right now but you can expect it will shoot right back up pretty quickly. Especially with the newest iPhone release around the corner. Now would be the time to buy some Apple stock if you have the cash.
now i love Steve jobs but i agree with Jerod apple computers (full Im not saying they don't have good hardware) is a good computer for people who are not good with computers and don't really care about security or performance just that they can get their emails and watch stupid you tube videos there happy, this seems to work for the large brainless population of the U.S. as much as don't like apple and its products I do admire Jobs and the amazing things he invented and achieved I envy his success and am sorry to see such a great and innovative person step down.
Looks like he saw the writing on the wall... he got out before his legacy is ruined by android. :) he's no dumby, he's got his ego to protect!!!
cheers, eh
I never understood why people buy mac pro's .. the huge tower with older tech than the imac.. for cheaper you can get a newer tech 27" imac with memory upgrade. the only reason to not get the imac is harddrive bays.. but 1000mb/s NAS it's not that detrimental.. of for any reason you must have all those bay occupied with hardrives then you need Newer and better tech than is offered in the mac pro, and you just get a PC and put OSX on it.. for cheaper and better than apple can provide... plus you can't get workstation graphics cards even as an option... so wtf.
anyone who buys a mac pro is uneducated and spending $1000 too much for what they get.
i never understood why anyone would buy one outsode of 'fashion' or 'cool' .. in other words 'yuppy douchebag'
if you must have a mac desktop computer, get an imac, or PC with osx on it. there is no reason ever to get a mac pro.
cheers, eh
The tone of this conversation would be vastly different if everyone was talking in person. Ethical treatment of fellow humans FTW!!!
I suppose not all people know what ftw means. (for the win) Anyway.... Can't we all just get along?
@ptv83,
Who is the bigger douchbag, the person who buys a mac, enjoys the machine for 5+ years without crashes, viruses or virtually any issues or the too good for mac pc user who lift his nose at mac users and goes out of his way to try to prove that they are dumb and he is superior in his way of thinking and his purchase?
The biggest douchbags in the computer world are the rabbid anti-mac people. And the close second goes to the Android nut swingers. Come to find both groups share members.
For all you Apple bashers out there, let me give you a little insight as to why so many people love apple and are willing to pay more for what is technically less computer. First allow me to make this statement, capitalism is a DEMOCRACY with very few rules, you as the consumer are the voter, every product you buy and brand you choose to favor is a vote, and you can vote as many times as you want, for as many parties (AKA companies) as you want.
That being said, PC was the dominant party for around a decade, the problem is that the longer everyone had a PC the more they realized how unreliable and unnecessarily complex the operating systems were for the everyday user, who really doesn't give a crap about anything other than A. access to the internet B. being able to create/edit pictures, drawings and videos C. being able to play games D. being able to write a paper or make a business presentation E. being able to easily integrate your gadgets.
Now, if you will remember, the beginning of Apple's current domination of the market started way back with the Ipod, it was the first MP3 player to truly catch on over the portable cd player. It wasn't too long after that that the first Iphone came out, now I realize that the Blackberry had been on the market for a good amount of time before that, but if anyone had one of those pre-Iphone Blackberries then you know as well as I do that they were not the easiest thing in the world to use, so as the first overly easy to use and very capable smart phone, the Iphone did very well. Which brings us about to current day, where apple has been able to now dominate the laptop market, because now everybody and there brother are familiar with apple's style of operating system AND they actually like that style of operating system better. Also what is the easiest way to integrate all these apple gadgets that everyone owns? Buy a Macbook which is made to be compatible with it, because although they aren't the top of the line computers on the market, they are at least of standard quality.
So why is everyone buying Apple products one after another even though the system specs are lower for your money? Because people want Apple to keep doing what they are doing, they want Apple to keep breaking the mold by creating gadgets and computers that have a maximum in simplicity while still being able to do ALL of the things that 90% of the market want them to do. And so, even though your sweet homemade computer could hack into the pentagon, most people just aren't interested in trying, which is why the majority of people vote Apple. They know what they are getting, and they want more of it
The only benefit of apple operating systems and software is it benefits Microsoft from looking less like a monopoly. Once any person becomes well rounded on any particular operating software or program, then is suddenly becomes the whole grail and the user finds all other software difficult. In reality it’s just laziness upon learning something new. There has been and exist today a lot of other good operating systems and software that just does not get taken advantage of because of the dominance of being first, popularity and marketing.
reality check...3.3 million macs vs 88 million PCs sold in 2010...PCs will dominate for awhile longer, probably until the next gen home computer comes along, use what you like
Army Juggernaut
really, douchebag..you're throwing that out there? who's a douchebag? the guy who automatically leads with it or the one who points out a major piece of shit that's supposed to be "the cats meow".
a mac pro desktop is religiously touted as THE singular piece of hardware for any and all graphics and design professional.. yet all you can get in it is a HD 5770. really... no fire pro. For actual photo editing and designers who want actual accurate colour reproduction, they'll want a fire pro card capable of true 10bit colour output and natively supported 10bit professional drivers.
the iMac though comes with the 6series cards though for some reason, for cheaper too. infact you can only get the 5770($270 for crossfire.. you could get a 6970 for that!) and 5870 in the mac pro... that's just sad! the 5870 was a piss poor performance card, haggered by the piss poor reference cooler design. limited to just 2 display port outputs and dvi, that wouldn't even power the 8x27" displays i use on my home office computer (which runs win7, unix & Lion simultaneously).
ddr3 memory limited to just 1333mhz.. .while i'm running a 12gb 2000mhz kit for just $180cdn.. 12gb of 1333 will run you +$480 over the base price.
they don't offer the 6 core chips without a $1300 UPGRADE on the "quadcore".. WOW, RIP OFF!!!, if you want more than 4 you're stuck with innefficient 2x4core config at a premium price as well. Along with that bottleneck, it creates a heat issue in a poorly designed air cooled only drive tower.
Speaking of harddrives.. from apple they want $320 per 2tb hard drive.. these are sata2 drives only too. $1500 for a 512gb SSD.. that's just ROBBERY! AND PEOPLE PAY THIS!?!?
you can't get a bluray drive.. forget that, still just a dvd/cd drive (wow so awesome!) *sarcasm...
i like the raid card option... $840 over the base price!
Like i said.. why would anyone EVER buy a mac pro???
the case is crap, the price can hit well over $10,000, vs. a $6500 PC with TRIPLE the specs.
and all while the best thing to do IF YOU MUST MUST have an actual MAC running OSX is to get the 27" iMAC with the core i7 upgrade... goto newegg buy a 1333mhz 12gb memory kit for $120(apple wants $630), ebay the 4gb that comes in it for cash back. and just buy a NAS storage box with as much as you need in it while you're at newegg because apple wants another $600 for a 2tb with a 256gb SSD. or $2000 for external storage... HAHAHA.. gimme a break..
YES apple is GREAT..... . not.
their phones are losing market share.. the ipod is obsolete, a $5000 mac pro is over priced and outdated, easily replaced and outdone by their own $2100 imac with $500 spent at newegg.
.. itunes isn't default on android phones and the drm is turning people away everyday as they finally hit that road block and they turn to piratebay/utorrent'ing onto their SD cards for their samsung/htc phones instead.
.. .the ONLY part of the market that is in ANY shape of surviving is their notebooks. and only do to a LARGE portion of north american schools forcing the kids to buy apple after high school(but osx pc notebooks are becoming more popular everyday too)
the only reason the imac doesn't steal from the mac pro market is because the same reason these "professional" wanna be's are dumb enough to buy mac in the first place.... HYPE.. COOLNESS... "wtf, you're supposed to be doing this for a living.. we can't have you bringing that imac into this office.. get a pro, or you're fired.. we have an image to keep" (yes that is an actual quote from an employer responsible for NBA advertising who shall remain nameless... though located in toronto.. f'ng hipsters... gladly i took an old G4 case and filled it with asus pc parts and watercooling for her.. now she has the fastest and quietest most stable mac pro in the office.. all her coworkers are jealous... dumb ****'s)
cheers, eh
dont ever buy a mac pro.... ever!
Apple's products would be so much better if they would just use ADOBE FLASH!
Will lose a wonderful person
