Apple has begun their program to distribute free cases to those suffering from the iPhone 4's antenna flaw--the solution reluctantly offered a week ago in a special news conference
It's done via the app store--download the "iPhone 4 Case Program" app, enter your Apple Store ID, and pick your free case--an Apple bumper or one of a few other third-party cases. All are currently backordered 3-5 weeks.
Five amazing, clean technologies that will set us free, in this month's energy-focused issue. Also: how to build a better bomb detector, the robotic toys that are raising your children, a human catapult, the world's smallest arcade, and much more.

I wonder how much free is... I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see some sort of scam later on regarding "special charges" on the bills of those who ordered them.
Oh no! People are "suffering" From losing a few bars! Oh the humanity? People are dying in the streets by the hundreds!
Actually, it's not that bad. Around 1% of iphone 4 users have complained about antenna issues.
Is PopSci becoming a hype journalism site? Probably.
'Since there are so many sad little cry babies who didn't get perfection, and because they can't keep their fingers off of one thin millimeter, we're going to spend upwards of $200 million dollars to alleviate the situation YOU ARE CAUSING."
And people will STILL talk crap about Apple. (reference neuenkir above)
Then again, maybe I have drank too much koolaid... I own an iPhone 4, my first Apple phone... I own an 2nd gen iPod touch, works perfectly as designed. Two shuffles, still going, and a Nano... I also own two used PowerMacs from 98, and 99 respectively... and an 27" iMac from 2009. Never had any problems with any of them that I couldn't fix in a half hour or so. Ever.
I've never had a single instance of malware on any of my Macs. Ever. Yes yes, I know, Apple's market share is soooo tiny that no one can be bothered to highjack the systems... so what.
There is no software today that I want or need to run, that I can't run on my Apple hardware.
What does 'it's not open', or 'it's closed' mean, when talking about a Mac?
Yes, my all-in-one isn't technically upgradeable (while retaining the warranty), but my powermacs are, and still are, video cards, processors, ram, hard drives, PCI slots...
Someone explain the Apple-hatred to me, I'd really like to understand it, instead of thinkin that those who hate Apple are just a bunch of retards.
Calm down fanboys. Popsci has been blatantly pro Apple for a while now. However, they can't ignore the antenna issue. For crying out loud, all that they've done is report the facts.
Is it a horrendous issue, no, but given all of the iPhone hype, it's going to be in the news.
Apple does get a lot of heat because of a couple of issues.
- Their products lately have been widely praised, while flaws are overlooked. The original iPhones reportedly suffered from excessive call drops -- not all of which could be laid on AT&T.
- They use quasi monopolistic schemes to extract money with little in return -- e.g. requiring peripheral suppliers
to buy highly overpriced connectors from Apple. Or how about the famous iPad requiring that apps be purchased only from Apple.
But cheer up, I doubt that this issue will really have much long term impact.
I've got a Belkin case. I can't wait for weeks.
