Folded DNA Used To Recreate Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’

“It is difficult to know oneself, but it isn’t easy to paint oneself either,” Vincent Van Gogh said in 1889. What if what makes up our ‘selves’ — our DNA — becomes the medium?

Caltech scientists recreated a swirling Starry Night out of “DNA origami” that’s merely the width of a dime. By folding the DNA molecules to create this complex scene, the scientists prove that this technology could be scaled up for constructing DNA-based devices on computer chips. Caltech and IBM began a partnership in 2009 to study and develop DNA computing.
