vin----thanks for the memories. i had a 1967 vw bus in 1972. god, i loved that car--wish i still had it. split window, barn doors, 1500 cc motor. took it from carbondale, il to key west, fla in the spring of 1972 and sucked the #3 exhaust valve (sound familiar?) in jacksonville on the way home. found some alley mechanic in jacksonville to rebuild it for the princely sum of $400. took him three days and we were back on the road, but by the time i got back to carbondale it had about rattled apart. friend of mine knew vw pretty well so i bought a copy of 'how to keep your volkswagen alive' and spent 8 days rebuilding it from the mains on up. connecting rods, wrist pins, valves, oversized oil pump, the works. after that she ran like a top for another 9 years until i sold it in 1981. starting to rust out, bad brakes. what a mistake. i'd give a lung to have her back.
@JusMoney - Great memories. I'm afraid that you're not going to like what happens to the Super Beetle this engine came from. I think the video of that will be up here in a few days.
By the way, I have a '74 Westy popup camper restoration project that could be yours for way less than a lung.
@vinmarshall---appreciate your comments and also your concern for my health! that '74 westy sounds tasty, even though my heart is with those pre-68 splitters. something about squeezing that big rubber bulb to clean the windshield . . .
what can you tell me about the camper? pix? i'll check back here. must also find out what happens to the super beetle.
@JusMoney I hear you on the split window busses. This Westy is a restoration project for sure. Not a rust bucket, but not a driver either. It runs, has 4 flat tires, and is rusted out in the rockers. The floors and the rest of the sheet metal is surprisingly intact and it still has all the camper gear.

I keep being too busy to finish the video of the super beetle, but you can get an idea of what happens from this (don't worry - the body was a goner before we decided to sacrifice it):

WOW what memories! I rebuilt my 1960 (one year before gas gauges) bug engine in 1977, all from the J.C. Whitney catalogue. The whole thing had frozen up when the little brass feeder tube from the Solex carb had fallen out and got sucked into one of the cylinders. Didn't know that until I pulled the head and it fell out on the floor. It caught the piston right at the apex of its rotation and smashed up against the head. Couldn't go forward, couldn't go back. Sure miss that car these days. Cost me about $350 to do the whole re-build.
