Here's my suggestion for a feature that may enhance the community.

On Lifehacker.com , there's a feature called "Followers." (You can read the article on it here: http://lifehacker.com/software/reader-guide-to-lifehacker/follow-your-favorite-lifehacker-commenters-300376.php )

Basically, if a reader like a commenter on the forums, there's a little button that says "Follow Commenter." From then on, they get notifications when the commenters they follow post/comment.

If they decide to stop following a commenter, they can do so from their Profile page (I think there might also be a link by that person's comments). I think it's a neat feature that might be useful.

Here's what I'm getting at - user ratings. Let users rate individual posts, or let them follow a user's comments with the option to stop at any time. Then place the number of followers.

OK, that's a long enough post!

Scojac,

Don't you get enough of my comments in the chatroom? Now you wanna follow my every post in the forums too? Should I worry that I'll need a restraining order? ;)

Don't worry, I have a restraining order on you already! Don't try to project your problem onto me!!! ;)

But what did you actually think of the idea?

If I follow your idea correctly, it would be much like subscribing to someone's blog on myspace... I dunno if that would be much good in a forum where following the thread is usually critical to understanding the post.

This is very cool-- thanks for showing this to me. We're going to introduce some user rating capabilities with our "Phase 2" site enhancements. I don't think there's a "user following" feature included, but you'll be able to see all that a user's been up to from that user's profile. I'll certainly throw this suggestion into the mix and see what we can do.

Thanks!

Phase 2!

Sounds exciting. When is the release?

I'll keep you posted. We're going to try and stagger it so we can get started sooner. Main page enhancements, way more video capability, lots of capabilities for users... And something really, really cool for PPX. I am also going to try to work in the upgrades you guys have been requesting-- the ability to sort stocks, etc. You will all be the first to know (and offer feedback, I'm sure) as we move forward.

The 6th annual Invention Awards are here, from an inflatable tourniquet to a better lobster trap to spring-loaded hocket skates. This issue is all about the celebration of invention.

Plus: Making synthetic biology breakthroughs in a garage, building a constantly-moving ping-pong table, and a ridiculously overpowered barbecue.
