Hi Guys,

I've some questions for you-- for a very cool purpose, too, which I can't divulge right now, but will-- as to your relationship to PPX and, also, the financial industry/situation we're all in right now. I'm really curious as to your feedback on these items. If you'd rather email me with your answers, please feel free (taylor.hengen@bonniercorp.com).

Thanks!

Taylor

Are any of you into trading in the real stock market, too?

Does PPX ever serve as a relief from the misery of real-life investing in the stock market? With the Dow falling so much, I'd imagine it's a great escape to go online and watch your fake money portfolio soar!

Or, do you not equate PPX as similar to the real stock market?

Any day-traders in the house? Are any of you PPX-investors totally not science-geek types but are drawn in by the thrill of building portfolios in PPX because you don't have the cash any more to do day trading on Wall Street?

Are any of you not interested in the real stock market, but interested in PPX for other reasons?

I have never traded real stocks for real money.
However, after playing PPX for the last year or so, I think it would be fun to try.

I don't have any real money, so, No i don't do real stocks.
I like science, but have never worked in tech or academics.
I have been playing the Hollywood excange for about a year.
I just discovered PPX last month.
"Gambling" on science issues makes more sense to me than sports. It makes no diffrence which team wins, But science has real consiquences. Therefore real drama.
So for me, PPX is a sports substitute, not a market substitute.

I'm a total science geek, and have played around in the real stock market from time to time. I must admit it is a rush to have the amount of PPX dollars that can fairly easily be acquired, which far exceeds any money I have personally invested. As for it being similar, there are aspects of PPX that are similar to the real stock market but there are far more dissimilarities, with the element of risk being one, I invest way more carelessly here than I would in the real world, because in the end I know I don't really lose anything.
I do play as a form of escapism although not from the market, more so to escape the daily grind.

I am invested in the market and I work as an investment advisor, so the stock market, for better or worse, is my life.

Even though business is my career, science and nature are my interests. With PPX, I thought I would meld my business knowledge with the science interest for fun.

So far so good.

What happened to DRYWST? What does INA mean?

INA = Inactive (closed, not open for trading, paid out)
HAL = Halted (stock has been halted, pending the payout)
ACT = Active (currently open for trading)

I have traded before in the stock market currently riding out the lows (currently invested for the long term) , and have strong interest in anything science, tech, and anything that is possible in the future to see where the tech will go.

PPX is similar to the stock market but not quite so active.
It used to be so active back in the early days (the days that had no commissions to pay at all, we had 40K to 100K+ days w/o the payouts)Now it just averages about 10K a day

I stay on here because i had built up my own group of contacts here that share a similar interests.

I have some long term investments, nothing huge, but it is out there. I watch the market frequently just to see how things are going.

I like PPX because of the community, and it is fun chasing after Jodeman even though the current way PPX is played it is impossible for me to catch him without him quitting.

I do not trade real stock, hope to one day but do not now.
I love PPX because it is like trading in A market however real this is compared to the real market.
PPX helps me learn stuff about sci/tech and have fun trading and making "money"
i enjoy making money, even the fake money

i hope that answers some of your questions, and why do you ask there questions taylor?
personal interest or business? and why does popsci want to know?

I'm a stock market dabbler. I look for stocks that are beaten down for questionable reasons and buy them, and I bail when they look overpriced (if they get to that point). I never have more than a few hundred bucks riding on any one company (which is a reason for much kicking-my-own-butt and also much thank-god-its-only-a-couple-hundred).

Popsci is great because it works well with this hobby. The research I do on stocks and the research I do on PPX props often dovetail in great ways that pay off in both financial and virtual gains.

As far as the current market and its relation to PPX, I sold off 90% of my real stocks in September, reaping a princely gain of $2489.00 after fees. Big Whoop. I'm sitting tight now, waiting for bottom before I buy back in.

In the meantime, PPX is helping me build my "buy" list for when I go back in. I'm kicking around Micron, Glaxo, and the automakers.

I see PPX as similar to the stock exchange because it has some of the same behavior--good news makes stocks rise, bad news makes them fall, but it all comes out in the wash.

But it's very different because there's an ultimate test a prop reaches, a truth or falsehood, that the real market does not have. Sure, if you play commodities or options you face that test daily, but you don't get a lump-sum payout when you figure it right for the long-term.

Another difference is the payoff for good information. In the real stock market, you can have good info and analysis and still get burned, because the stock market rides a lot on BS. PPX, however, acknowledges good information quickly and decisively. News that Peanut Technology Inc has shown a %100 increase in profits might make a blip in the real market because it's not a hot, moving stock. But if they announce a new breakthrough in peanut technology and PPX has a prop based on it, you will certainly see it move.

The big disconnect I see is the difference between what PPX is trying to do and what individual traders are doing. I joined because of my enthusiasm and enjoyment of science, prediction, and numbers. Having reached a comfortable status, I find the game itself has gotten pretty tired, hinging on daily gains, rankings, and short-term stock moves.

That part isn't fun anymore. The research and analysis, however, are still a big kick.

Anybody wanna buy a 10 million dollar Popsci account? I'm thinking about starting over...

Em... should we be talking about this in a thread started & closely read by Taylor?

Taylor, DID YOU THAT ==>

(Vulgarian, what are you asking for it?
Is User/Pass enough for login? Doesn't it also check isp address or something?)

Oh, sorry, i guess it was just a shadow.

Scratch that last bit, really.... fit of pique.

Aw man, i hate it when i screw up a joke with a typo.
It shoulda read

Anyone that is lucky to have a little left after paying the bills know the market is the best long term approach to build wealth for retirement. The market is depressing but with 20 years to go you have to weather the storms. It is only a loss when you sell (or the value goes to zero.) I do not see PPX as a replacement for the market. The attraction of PPX for me is to learn about new topics in the scientific world. By putting a pretend value on the prop it provide motivation to research and learn more. There are several problems with the the PPX exchange that have all been aired in the past. At the end of the day it is just a game. The only reward (other than the one contest for the largest gain) is the gain of knowledge. To make this a replacement or more like the real market there would need to be real rewards for goals and a correction to the documented flaws. Lets keep this in focus. They way it works now this is nothing more than a game.A fun game but still a game.

Hello Taylor. Yes I own shares but not in the stock market format. other fund. anyways yes i find this site very interesting for its stock market aspect.

Is Bonnier corp. interested in starting actual trading with real stocks and we would be the brokers/traders? Of course you would have to invest real money, but the comp. does get that from subscriptions and ads, correct?

In that case it looks like the ppx community of traders would be mostly interested in stocks concrning Apple, Microsoft, Google, and start up companies.

An interesting idea if thats what ur interested in, for we, the traders, wouldnt be held responsible for any risks. Also, it seems to be too late to get into Microsoft, and Apple.

Eh, but whos to tell the innner workings of a corporation. Imagination will always fill in the spaces.

I wish I had money to trade in the real stock market. I find it fascinating to watch the markets as a whole influenced by the current economic crisis. Watching the markets rise and fall with Presidential speeches and news stories is fascinating. Of course this is not always reliable, but interesting.

Yes, especially when the president gives a speech about how strong our economy is and the stock market drops 200 points, which has happened several times under our new administration.

Yup, I put a portion of my income in the market every month, yes even in this market.

Never really related PPX with the Dow, other than wishing I could make the same profit with real money.

Have day traded, not lately to much volatility and I don't have the time currently to baby sit an account.

Sci-geek all the way I fear

PPX interested me on the prediction aspect mainly as related to scientific predictions coming true or not. Volcano is a great example. If it matters I'd like to see this set up as a 'buy once market'. Make your prediction and live with it for a true predictive market. However I know that won't work as there would be no reason for people to come here every day.

Any more questions? If so the answer is 42.

"...If so the answer is 42."
But what exactly is the question?

"But what exactly is the question?"
What is six times nine.

54? Maybe you want 6 times 7?

You can know the question,
or the answer,
but you can't know both.

Different reasons than most - copy of my recent post in another forum below .. Have Fun, all !!!!!

I like Kubie's suggestion .. and I haven't played very long here .. I am having fun - and learning each time I access the site .. ( My dad had Popular Science issues back to about 1920 ) .. I would like the stat on my "first" reaction to an IPO or any stock .. (and be allowed even without any purchase - just a Vote.) .. I could keep it myself, I guess - but am too lazy .. I would also like to know percent won short .. Most of my early success here has been on betting it won't happen ..
The original post by aleubinetski leads to a 2nd ranking system - for which I could care less .. this game is encouraging me to spend more time here than on TV or a Poker site, or facebook .. Time well spent !!!!
