I really think the PS3 is going to win the console war.
This is because it has astounding graphics, likeable games, and it is pretty popular.

But, the Xbox 360, in my opinion, would be a fierce competitor.
This is because it has good graphics, although not as great as the PS3's, very popular games, and overall the system is popular.

So basicly I think these two consoles are the only ones that stand a chance in this competition.

Predicting the 'winner' is entirely dependent on your timescale. I have no doubt that the PS3 has the legs to carry it 5-8 more years in the market. However, you seem to be basing your opinion on what is 'popular' and graphics. For one, the PS3 and 360 have nearly identical graphics, with one being better in terms of shading or texture [1]. Graphics are also a matter of personal preference.

You are neglecting the currently most "popular" console which is the Wii. The Wii is far outselling both the 360 and the PS3 and it ,strictly speaking, cannot produce graphics as good as the other two. So, is it graphics or popularity?

"Winning" over the long scale is entirely dependent on how long the console maker and game publishers are willing to support it, game-wise and community-wise. The PS2 is considered to be outmatched in performance but it continues to sell very well. ~100k units/week (compare to PS3 selling ~160k to ~180k) as well as ~700k game units/week (PS3 ~1M) [2].

I do agree with you that the PS3 will sell/gross/profit/whatever more than the other consoles over the long run, but because of far more than 'astounding graphics, likeable games, and (being) pretty popular'. BLU-Ray, exclusive games and community support are some of many factors.

I completely agree with you. And yes, it will probably be most effective in to long run, but the Wii does not have as many features as the PS3. Also the Wii being the most popular could be because of several reasons:

1) The Wii is cheaper.

2) The Wii is smaller and a lot more portable.

3) The Wii has many more 'kid friendly' games.

But now I realise that the Wii would also be a possible winner.

Thank you for the info,

Actually, on gamespot they compared both the 360's and the PS3's graphics. Both were comparable, both winning some and losing others.

"likeable games"
Very True. Though they don't have the selection of the 360. You have to be a hard core MGS fan to get a PS3.

"Pretty popular"
And yet, it still is the least bought console of the batch.

"...the Xbox 360, in my opinion, would be a fierce competitor... good graphics, although not as great as the PS3's, very popular games, and overall the system is popular."
It's probable main popularity gain is LIVE. But I think that that is a great service, though I don't know why PS3's networking service isn't as popular.

"So basicly I think these two consoles are the only ones that stand a chance in this competition."
I don't think the Wii is in the "Next Gen" Competition. The Wii is for an entirely different audience, and where the PS3 and 360 aim to create better graphics and games, the wii tries to put you more in game but regurgitates old graphics and the same old games over and over.

And I agree with the Mr. Napkin here. The PS3 may indeed win in the long run, not as a game console, but more of the fact that it's a cheap Blu-ray player.

I know people that own a PS3 that don't play MGS. Also, there are many other (good) games for the PS3 besides the MGS series.

Also, I think the PS3 has many more games to choose from, simply from the fact it is backwards compatible with PSone and PS2, while the Xbox 360 plays only Xbox 360 games.

The Xbox 360 had a year head start of the PS3 to improve graphics and gameplay. At this point both of them look about even; although, the PS3 is still gaining speed..........The PS3 has a stable of features built right in: WiFi, bluetooth, card readers (CF, SD, miniSD, memory stick pro), video download service, remote play, FREE online play, full web browser, up to 7 wireless controllers (w/ rumble+Six Axis), Blu-ray player, 1080p video & games, 7.1 surround sound, HDMI, digital audio, Parental Control (movies & games)..........The amazingly creative title Little Big Planet has so much potential that it could become the YouTube of videogames. Games like Grand Turismo 5, God of War 3, Call of Duty: World at War, Devil May Cry 4, Resistance 2, Mirror's Edge, Killzone 2, BioShock, Dead Space, Motorstorm 2, SOCOM: Confrontation, Tekken 6, FF13 & FF Versus, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and many more paint a pretty picture of what's to come..........The fact that the world's fastest super computer runs with the help of over 12,000 PS3 Cell engines and that every PS3 owner can help find a solution for some of the toughest problems we face, like Cancer, by using Folding@home, is the cherry on top..........The PS3 will not outsell the Wii in 2009, but with the help from the Blu-ray victory it will win the console wars in the longrun. The PS2 had a slow start as well and look at where it is now, two years into the next generation of gaming and still with healthy sales..........I enjoy good strong competition because the biggest winners are always the consumers. That being said, I don't want to see Microsoft take over gaming. We've seen what they have done with the PC market releasing unfinished, uninovative, unoriginal and defective products. Some of it started to creep into gaming (Red Ring of Death on Xbox 360) which is still happening today and is definitely not good..............................PS: Sorry about the bunch up, I'm doing this from my phone through Opera Mini (best mobile browser).

Personally, I think that whichever gaming system has the most games available will most likely be the most bought, because they will appeal to a larger crowd.

360 has limited backwards compatability just like the PS3. Most games are supported, but a few aren't.

I think one of the reason why PS3 will win is because of the popularity of the Bluray Disc. If you are planning to buy a Bluray player, would you buy a standalone BD player or the PS3 which is much cheaper?

I comepletely dissagree with tofer_izel.First off. Most of the games that you listed off are also xbox 360 games.Let me list a couple for xbox 360 that are better than those PS3 games combined.Assasins Creed, 1 and 2, and they are making a third. Halo 3,and Halo ODST are both more then PS3 could even dream of thinking of making. Street Fighter 4. Overlord. Fable 2. Prey. Lost Planet. Shall I go on? There are also xbox elites. The red ring of death can be fixed quickly and easily.PS3 Prices are SkyRocketing, while xbox 360 prices remain low. I would go on because there is so much more to talk about, but i dont want to take up the half a page that you did.
