If it's bothering you that much, perhaps you should just take a break from the game for a while until things get sorted out.

Berating our gracious hosts who invite us to play this game for free just doesn't seem like an effective strategy.

Brian read the slide downward continues. Everyone seems content with Megan's responses but to me its looking more and more like the emperor has no clothes. But I guess if everyone is content with the way things are, instead of wanting them to be the way they could be, who am I to disagree, so those of us not content should just drink the Kool Aide.

It's not that folks are happy with the way things are. It's that PPX has acknowledged the problems, and told us they have limited resources (staff) to fix them but they're working on it.

It would be great if they hired additional staff, but PPX probably isn't bringing in enough income to cover that cost. Over time, this will change.

Back when I first started using eBay, they had similar growing pains. Now their system is reliable.

they've been saying that they are fixing PPX since shortly after PPX started, and yet the same problems keep reoccurring over and over again. Players have given tons of suggestions, and offered to help in countless ways, and even the easiest and cheapest were rejected. How hard or expensive would it be to have members preview IPO's before they go live to ensure that they make sense and are dated appropriately, or to ensure that the payout criteria are clear. How hard is it to stop a stock after its end date has come, or how hard is it to payoff a stock in a timely manner.

Now they just did an overhaul, that since they didn't do any market research for, or even ask the end user what they wanted (and ignored all the suggestions given), it went over very poorly, and was implemented poorly as well. This would have been a perfect time to have done the over haul right, they could have dome the integrating with the rest of POP Sci which made sense, and they still could have done the adds which also makes sense and I was surprised they didn't do on day one, and they could have addressed on going issues as well.

brian, you are wrong. First of all, the ppx is not run by bozos, it's run by a bozo. there is no way that more than one person could do this badly. Second of all, rabbit, I like you, but I pray that you are not the person in charge of the ppx, as that would greatly change my opinion of you.

You raise some valid points. They have had some significant goofs. But things are what they are.

Having folks review IPO's is a great idea, but it'll probably take a little extra staff time. And they're talking like they're swamped.

Reminding them of problems is a good thing.

Well, if they're swamped, why not hire another staff person using the revenue generated by the ads that any SERIOUS ppx player clicks on as much as possible?

I have my share of complaints also, but if ppx is so awful, then just quit playing.

I pretty much have quit playing. And there are other prediction markets to play, however this is the only one slated just for technology (at least that I have found). My frustration is that from the beginning I saw the potential that this market had, and felt that it was in capable hands (having been a Pop Sci fan for over 30 years). I still see the potential but the belief that it was in capable hands no longer exists. I also want to point out to all those who claim we should not complain because it is a free game. although we don't pay to play, Pop Sci is far from altruistic, this market place gives them and their magazine and their issues PR, and lots of user eyes, and the opportunity for ad dollars. If they would come closer to getting it right, and getting rid of some of the errors inherent to the system they have developed here they could also generate marketable data that they could sell.

Brian--slamming us is not okay, and these questions have been addressed other threads. Since you already seem to realize this isn't the right forum for these questions, I assume you already know where to find the answers you're looking for. If I'm misguided, you can see them here and here

I have an idea. Why doesn't someone with the necessary skills, like programing for instance, go work for popsci and fix this mess. Until that happens I suggest everyone take a chill pill.

So rosewood does your post mean that in your opinion PPX is fine and has no issues that need resolved or even discussed. From where you are everything is fine and dandy.

David, for the most part everything seems to be working ok, except when they halt stocks and don't pay them out for a while. PPX would work better if we could comment on each others posts directly instead of writing a new one.

David, the way I see it is that there are plenty of issues that need to be resolved, and no, everything is not fine and dandy. But there is a difference between constructive criticism and just plain criticism. Now from what I've read, you have always been civil in tone, and have for the most part avoided comments that seem to be negative just for the sake of negativity. I wish that could be said for everyone on this forum. But even so, the powers that be have our complaints, whether or not they plan to act on our suggestions or comments. So endless repitition of complaints kind of becomes, with all due respect, bitching and moaning. You have stated that you have all but quit playing the game. If you are one of the 18 people between me and the top ten, then best wishes and go ahead and quit. If not, then I will miss your comments which have been for the most part, constructive, well thought out, and well stated.

billcosby: I wasn't defending Brian you can check the archived forums and see that he and I seldom agree, and that I basically think that he's a pompous twit, and I don't think he should call people names. That said he has put forth some very valid constructive criticism since he became a member, that like most has been continually ignored, and caused him to be slammed by a lot of other players myself included. Even though he's a jerk and it pains me to admit it, he has a very clear and valid vision for where the primary market problems lie, and he has consistently fought to improve this place.

I had directed my post to rosewood who appeared to believe that if everyone just ignores the problems everything will turn out swell. I've been around long enough to realize that if its worth doing its worth doing right, and that often things only get done when enough people complain loudly enough about it. It all comes down to systems theory where change usually occurs only when there is a certain level of discomfort, otherwise things stay broken.

I'm not one of the 18 in front of you (although I was once at 17, I'm now in the upper 60's). But I don't totally quit because I understand the potential here, and have great hope that those at Pop Sci will eventually see what they actually have, and then decide to treat PPX the way it should be treated. As long as I think their is merit in saving PPX from itself, I'll point out its flaws, and its weaknesses, as often as I see the need. When I don't think its worth saving, then I'll go away.

david, glad to hear that you haven't given up hope just yet. The clarity of your statement is exactly the reason I feel that you're a valuable addition to these forums. I understand where you're coming from, and apologize that my statement was really aimed at a wider audience than you, although it was addressed to you. I do feel that there are far too many people spitting criticisms without suggesting solutions. And I'm glad that you're not one of the 18 in front of me.

I agree with David. Although we must give the staff here credit for trying, there have been too many issues for them to just shrug off. We are just trying to make this a more enjoyable, easy to understand, brain stimulating atmosphere for anyone interested in putting their opinion into the issues in today's scientific world. Yes your majesty I can ignore these threads and posts. I understand exactly where you are coming from and I agree totally. There are needs for change, and there are needs that need to be met for a stimulating environment for PPX players. But there will always be issues, things that need to be changed, things that dont need to be changed as well. It is human nature to not be satisfied with what is had at the moment. all this arguing is useless. Popsci is playing with you all. Actually it must be Bonnier Corp. They make too much money off those stupid ads that have increased in voracity over the years. I have recently compare my best of whats new 1999 with the latest one. Pages still seem the same and articles but more color ads, etc. The money goes to line the pockets of those in charge, leaving us with a useless website, forum and a less creative magazine. I won't complain about the mag since i like some of the articles especially the diy stuff at the end.

These forums are admittedly not nearly as good as the old ones that were hosted on VBulletin, but we've been waiting for an updated forum module that's coming up in Drupal. Since Drupal is an open-source project, I can't give an exact date for when these will be available, but it will be soon. Somewhere around a month from now, I'm thinking. The new module (from what I'm told--I'm not a developer, so I can't tell yet) will have the same functionalities as the old PPX forums, plus a few things we were missing, like private messaging.

More info coming up in a few days, when we figure out the schedule for rolling out other PPX enhancements.

Thanks for the update, Providing updates about what is going on is one of the smartest things that you can do at this time, and I am sure is greatly appreciated.

We used the native Drupal forums because we knew we'd be able to update them fairly soon and doing so made more sense in the long run. VBulletin required more login integration and annoying developer work, which didn't make sense because we would have to scrap it anyway a few months after launch.

Well, if we're on the topic of annoying, how about having to refresh 100 times to get into my portfolio? That's what I call annoying.

Everything is just fine for me. Milkweed110, it's good to know there is somebody on the teenage 14-16 wave length. I'm sixteen and found out about all of this great stuff through the Popsci magazine. I look forward to the private chats. Also, I am know genius by any means. Everybody, like rosewood said should just take a chill pill. The only thing that popsci lacks for me is the private chats. I have know access denied stuff and also I block 98.0% of pop-ups.

Join a discussion in the PPXChat chatroom and you'll talk with many of the top players in this game. Do they deny that there are problems, bugs, quirks, issues, or any other term you want to apply? No. They realize that like anything else, this isn't perfect, but it is entertaining and often interesting.

Regretably the bozos who ran the site still work for and are furthuring their efforts to destroy POPSCI. Boru was right.
