Murder and car-jacking simulator Acclaimed video game Grand Theft Auto V was released on Tuesday, and every man, woman, child, and several species of lower fauna purchased multiple copies, propelling it to the category of Biggest Entertainment Thing Ever. How big? It made an estimated $800 million in 24 hours. That's a larger first-day take than any movie, game, or album ever released.
Not to compare apples and oranges, but by contrast, even blockbuster movies don't come anywhere near that. The Avengers was a gargantuan success, and it still raked in a relatively minuscule $80 million. If you adjust 1983's Return of the Jedi for inflation, it still only comes to $14 million for opening day.
GTA V was also reportedly the most expensive game ever made, with production costs running an estimated $115 million. Still not a bad return on investment, though.
*Production costs have been estimated at $266 million.
That revised, this is hardly an article. That is quite literally two paragraphs on a subject that everyone in the world has already heard about. Come on, PopSci. Step your game up.
Seems like an advertisement. Not an independent well thought out article.
A better comparison would be how many individual copies were sold compared to individual movie tickets, DVD's, CD's and music downloads sold.
Of the ka-zillion owners now of this game, I believe Colin is one of them and of those who are not, one is me, lol.
They didn't "make" 800k the first day, they sold 800k the first day. Guess it sounds better the wrong way though.
This really isn't surprising since GTA4 held the title previously.
@Trooper Bri - They didn't make 800k, more like $800 MILLION.
@Bloo-Mahrz - I'm sure Rockstar is more interested in the dollar amount from the first-day take and I don't see how you consider this blurb from Colin an advertisement. There isn't even one mention of the game content or story line or a price for the game.
@SirCorrecto - Production costs aside, just because you know about it doesn't mean that everyone in the world has already heard about it. I found this article to the point and believe Colin did a very good job taking five minutes to write it.
Good for Rockstar and Take-Two! They've definitely found a way to win us all over with violence and drugs.
I must not be human.
well the rest who didnt buy, aint humans.. they are pirates.
Or, the rest are PC gamers and are waiting... somewhat patiently...
A few million bought a video game and you equate that the entire human race? Does that mean pimple faced idiots that like to pretend that they're tough guys by video game murder and mayhem are the only ones that should be included in the human race. Is that like saying only white people are Americans?
If you're going to compare apples and oranges, compare the numbers of games sold to the number of movie tickets sold.
Ahem, Revenue for the retail and online outlets generated by the sales of GTA V was 800 million, Rockstar and Take Two didn't get 800 million in sales as they don't retail the games, save for some of the online sales, they wholesale them at a decent discount so that the retailers can markup the price and make a profit.
Avatar, which is the biggest box office movie ever, did not reach 800 million (760) over almost a year on the charts. Nothing sells like sex, drugs and violence. I just shake my head at parents buying it for their preteen children, oh well, they've seen it all before no doubt, nothing new.
I havent bought it yet, dont want to get mugged on the way home. I'll take the chance when I get my PS4.
