Amid chants of "Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!, the Science Guy himself logged on to Reddit yesterday afternoon to answer questions about science, his childhood, his favorite experiments, and a human mission to Mars. Despite a weird Gillette plug in his opening post, Bill Nye's latest AMA turned out to be just as fun as the one he hosted last year.
Here are our eight favorite questions and answers.
1. Bill Nye's life was changed by bees.
User MuddIsland asks, "Mr. Nye is there any interesting event from your childhood, teens, or even adult life that you would be willing to share? If so what is it and how did it affect your life?"
2. Bill Nye sometimes gets science facts wrong.
After Nye's poetic description of bumble bee anatomy, user jhartsho very hesitantly offers a correction:
3. Bill Nye has a favorite science experiment.
User crow6671 asks, "Thank you for doing this iAmA. You rock!! Here's my question, what is one of your favorite experiments to do?"
Nye's got it covered:
4. Bill Nye can't pick a favorite scientific theorem.
User TheSillyLion asks, "What is your favorite scientific theorem or equation? (Example: theory of relativity, Hubble parameter, E=mc2)"
Nye puts it in perspective:
5. Bill Nye won't discount the idea of life on Mars.
User Jamiefox92 asks, "Do you think that we could have a manned mission to Mars in our lifetime with all the factors such as time from Earth to Mars and with the amount of solar radiation that the men would face during the trip?"
Nye dreams of Martians:
6. Bill Nye can explain dark matter in one sentence.
User DrXaverius asks, "Can you explain dark matter in layman's terms?"
Yes, Nye can:
7. Bill Nye never gets bored.
User cloudclad asks, "What field of science bores you the most?"
Nye is polite but firm:
8. Bill Nye isn't in it for the money.
User MuscleMansMom asks, "Hi Mr. Nye! What made you chose doing stuff like kid shows as opposed to working solely in a lab?"
Nye believes in the scientist in everyone:
As often in life and childhood nerds get picked on, why do they dress differently than the norm, causing they to be more noticeable?
Why it may be bad to bully a nerd, it also wrong to flaunt you is smarter than the next guy too. Hey nerds, you might bring on being picked on, all by yourselves by flaunting you are the exceptionally smart guy in the room.
While some bullying could lead to violence, and violence is always wrong, perhaps the bully in the beginning is just really leveling the field in fair play and saying hey buddy, we are all the same.
Interesting bow tie you wearing there Bill Nye. Are you flaunting you smarts to the world sir, hmmmm?
12, why do I feel so much like you're the type of person that would say, "well, she shouldn't have been dressed like that"? How about just stopping at saying that a violent action is wrong and not look for reasons to justify it? Treat others well. What's so hard about that?
Ya, just like women should dress less provocatively to discourage rape? It's a shit argument in both cases. A bully's a bully. If somebody wants to bully you, they will find an excuse (any excuse) to do so. Dressing differently doesn't make you an a$$hole. Being an oppressive, violent tyrant makes you an a$$hole. Don't mix that up.
Colonel Sanders had a bow tie. Maybe Bill Nye is just declaring his love of fried chicken to the world, eh 12?
Ya know old Colonel Sanders made commercials and it is a great marketing desire to stand out and be notice, so to be remembered. He dress for his old antique southern style.
And obviously Bill Nye the science guy wants to be noticed and remembered too.
Really, you have not notice a pattern of how the media illustrates what a nerd looks like? And yes there are those people who jump on the bang wagon of that style to declare to the world who they are, "SMARTER", than the average guy, they flaunt it.
Oh and for how woman dress, they dress in a manner and style through out the world amplifying they are woman and can be seen, heard, smelled they are woman. They will dress often to their local customs, but the end result is all the same.
Then some woman push the local customs up a notch because of competition and they sexual showing amplification bar goes higher. Some lesser educated men with less control see this as an invitation and said woman usually acts over the top as aggressive b* to chase the common folk away. She is working it for a bigger fish.
Men just advertise strength, power, money and assets. Its a superficial sexual attraction game both sexes play and with education and maturity some over come it. Still all the sexes do it.
We all strut...
12, just stop. You're digging a hole. Yes, we understand that Bill Nye dresses this way because he's associated with the character Bill Nye the Science Guy. You're making a separate argument that all nerds dress this way to get at the jocks and therefore "had it comin'". "Some lesser educated men with less control see this as an invitation." Seriously? How about the likelihood that they're sociopathic? Logic fail on your part. Bad behavior is bad behavior. The end.
I was going to comment on 12's comment but instead I will just throw this out there: How cool would it have been if Bill Nye, Mr. Rogers and Mr. Wizard(Don Herbert) could have all be in one room together to anwser questions? (I do know that Mr. Nye is the only living member of this trio) Those three guys got me interested in science and how things are made/work in the first place.
Just think how many young minds those three have influenced for the better! I was one of them lol.
Where is all this resentment coming from? It seems you are a bit insecure about your own intelligence, and projecting that insecurity onto other people.
Why do you assume his point comes from resentment. Many peoples dress a certain way to illustrate to the world of who they are or how they wish to be known and why did you do a login name change from 12 to robot? How many mind reading skills do you actually have? LOL
Robot is just mad that he is no longer robot. Popsci created a monster, rather multiple monsters now that he's got multiple accounts each with a slightly different personality. We all see through it though. The grammar, spelling, corny jokes, "snort". lol, just saying.
There is a particular group of whiners that are so easily distracted from the article.... ha ha. So you disagree with my opinion that is fine, I learn too by responses. But now many of you are trolling off on distractions. What a bunch of knuckleheads.... rofl.
Your statement oozes resentment. One does not have to be a mind reader to see that. And I am not beholden to your wishes. Why should I pretend I am addressing different people when 12 and Wonder are clearly sock puppets?
You are so funny and I put no wishess upon you.
I happen to think you are the dreaded bubbagump!
Take care. ;)
seriously, he needs to be medicated. Half of the comments on this site are different accounts of Robot's. i have no resentment toward you nor am i distracted from the article. I'm discussing what everybody else is discussing, how does that make us distracted? You made a point about the article that most people disagree with. During the debate, it was pointed out that you have more than one account. Your character was called into question, and it's relevant to the point you were trying to make; or trying to troll for responses that is.
I had forgotten about BubbaGump. That was you too? Not that it would really be THAT surprising.
You are robot and his aliases, lol.
Except that "Robot" and all of his aliases always have an annoying moving photo next to them that slows down my backwoods, lousy internet connection. :/
