Last August in Huanchaquito, a town on the arid northern coast of Peru, the winter winds uncovered six human skulls. A villager alerted Yale University archaeologist Oscar Gabriel Prieto Burmester to the find, and soon thereafter Burmester and his team had unearthed the ancient remains of 43 children and 76 llamas, and not a single adult—a sacrificial site. Preserved by the area's dry climate, the 900-year-old mummies date to the age of the pre-Columbian Chimú culture.
The bodies, which lay facing the coast, rested in a single sediment layer, suggesting that they were killed as a group as an offering to an ocean deity, Burmester says, perhaps as an attempt to control the weather. A thick layer of sediment surrounding the mummies indicates that it rained violently right before or during the slaughter. For the sacrifice, the Chimú people offered the best they had. Children represented fertility and renewal, Burmester says, and llamas provided food, clothing and transportation. The now-excavated mummies await further study in a museum in the nearby city of Chan Chan.
Social and environmentally, I wonder what dramatic event that forces the minds and hearts of these local peoples to respond with this dramatic event 900 years ago.
Human nature wise and thinking in terms of being a parent, it really makes me wonder what was going on to motivate this sacrifice.
It had to be started by the local leader or religious leader. I do not imagine the parents came up with this idea.
"... In November of 1978, the world was shocked by the suicide deaths of 913 members of the People's Temple cult. Jim Jones, the leader of the group, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown, Guyana, a remote community that Jones carved out of the South American jungle and named after himself. Jones constantly feared losing control of his followers. His paranoia was the main reason he moved the cult to Guyana...."
I guess you never know what people will do past or even close to present.
Science sees no further than what it can sense.
Religion sees beyond the senses.
Voltaire said it best in regard to religion...
"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."
The world will never know peace until we are able to get rid of and put behind us 3 things , Money-Religion-Racism
As long as those 3 things exist in this world we will NEVER know peace it is simple as that. Unfortunatly we as a human race will never be able to give up all three to be truly enlightened and free and live at peace.
Voltaire shouldn't have limited his thoughts to religion. His idealogical progeny have done an amazing amount of atrocities within the confines of atheism. Atheistic communism as an example has killed between 110 and 250 million of their own people, not in war but just for giggles, gulags forced starvation purges whatever. In cambodia they killed 8% of the countries population PER YEAR.
Money religion and racism? Not one of these things matter, its only what you do with a thing that does matter. Money, can motivate people to destroy or create, religion as well, but then again anything that makes a person feel anything, believe anything, compassion love hate fear desire happiness anger positive or negative all can be used for good OR evil. Either one just as easily.
As for racism I don't know how that has captured the minds as the only real evil left, not liking someone worse than rape genocide robbery? You can be murdered, beaten or anything else for any reason, why does it matter more because it was based on skin color or tribal affiliation? I really wouldn't be relieved to find out someone who tried to murder me did it for money, shoes, social standing or whatever instead of racial background. Wouldn't make it better to me, not a bit.
Undoubtably, Myan ruler Al Gore-acoytal, convinced them all that the long form calander foretold of a world ending chain of global warming caused by man's production of CO2.
The locals, knowing that a young person will produce much more CO2 in their life and to solve issues of overpopulation, turned to Planned Parenthood, who suggested family planning in the fore of 26th trimester abortions.
They then learned that methane produced by the Llamas was a greater contributor to global warming, and influenced by the ethical desire to be vegan and appease the great deity PETA, they swore never to eat meat or wear animal products again.
The farmers, being cruicified in the media for their animal abuses of feeding the Llamas corn to fatten them up instead of only an all grass diet, realized that the market was no longer open to Llama products. Thus, they eliminated their herds in a mass slaughtering. PETA rejoiced.
In the end, with weak vegitarian immune systems and no children, the people grew old, sick, and called up Dr. Jack Kavorkian-acoytal to commit a mysterious mass euthanasia - thus leaving the rest of humanity to wonder how so great and glorious a society could just dissapear from the Earth.
