A cache of feathers preserved in amber, dating from around 70 to 85 million years ago, was just found in Canada, showing that border between winged dinosaurs and the earliest avians. The study indicates that these feathers, relatively modern, were already appearing even before the non-avian dinosaurs were extinct.
Click to see some amazing photos of feathers trapped in amber.
Some other tidbits: The researchers can even tell if the feathers were colored or not, due to the amount of pigment cells preserved thanks to the amber. So far as they can tell, the feathers had a range of color, from solid to mottled to transparent. It's not immediately clear which feathers belonged to early birds and which to non-avian dinosaurs, but the level to which they're similar to even some modern birds like the relatively ancient grebe is pretty striking.
The study can be read in full in tomorrow's issue of Science.
Imagine a creature with tranlusent feathers. probably just washed out by time but still I cant help imagineing a synthetic looking organism. Similar to the asthetic of those flouresant christmass trees without power.
Theres no way this isn't turning into a religous debate. lets try are damndest not to be predictable.
These were created by magic 10,000 years ago. 70 million years ago God was still counting how much bacteria he is made up of so he could make man in his image.
i know this is probably unlikely but i wonder if these dino feathers might have preserved any DNA that we can use to create a jurassic park for real?
@kook916 It would be a one-Dino park.
But do to the fact that they are the actual feathers, not some minerals filling up pores, would imply that there could be DNA or proteins left.
Also, thinking of people who say 'artifacts' were the creation of Satan to trick people… Can't wait to see the look on their faces.
It would be funny if they did find dna and were only able to replicate birds.
LOL i didnt even think how it would only be the one dinosaur but definately makes sense lol brain fart
also id feel a little ripped of if it was a feathered dinosaur and not reptilian looking
Can we just have jurrasic park in real life so I can die a happy man.
Jurrasic chicken farm park, now that would be a farm to see. Yes, I think it would be amazing if they could retrieve usable DNA from these and bring it back to life.
Yea the cosmos was created billions of years ago and what the earth 4.7 billion years. Life grew from a stew of things to now. I have no problem with that and can see easily evolution of animals and other animals that adapt to their situation to survive. It’s all good so far.
I also can see a higher being coming into to play and visiting earth on many different occasions and adding some spices and vegetables to the stew of life and changing things to eventually come up with a conscious self aware intelligent human. To me it’s all good so far.
As this human matures he also gets visited now and then to learn moral lessons. Seems to me, I learn most in life as I make mistakes and try to get over it. It has been us humans writing down the perceptions of this divine interference. Well we humans are not perfect and neither are our writing skills or interpretations. Yup, it’s all possible and reasonable to me.
There are a lot of humans across the world and we are all individuals. So it makes sense too, we have a great variation of culture and religions. The obvious thing and amazing is how all over the world we humans hear a divine voice in our minds and hearts and just feel there is something more to life and its taking care of us.
Our scientist easily can see life being out in the outer space and life among the stars. Yup, I do see a great things as being possible at the same time and correct too.
I said this once before somewhere else and I'll say it again.
Devine intervention is a revolution to evolution, being adaptive to a higher way of life.
As you look to the stars, say CHEESE! Your being watched! ;)
Jurassic Robot Chicken Park.
Now that would be even better.
Check out this blast from the past:
"Well, maybe dinosaurs have more in common with present day birds than they do with reptiles. Look at the pubic bone. Turned backwards, just like a bird. Look at the vertebrae. Full of air sacs and hollows, just like a bird. Even the word 'Raptor' means bird of prey." --Sam Neill on Dr. Alan Grant, 1993
You are right and logically sound in saying there is the possibility of intervention from something beyond Earth.
But you start to lose some rationality when you include metaphysics or "divine" intervention. Anything that may have, or does intervene in our world must adhere to the rules of physics or all scientific data we have is moot.
There is no indication or evidence that points to that.
If there is any sort of intervention, it is by a being or beings that are as much a part of our universe as we are. If there is a god, she is a scientist and not a magician.
I bet the "wings" from these cloned creatures would be MIGHTY TASTY! *grabs BBQ Sauce*
I love how we know so damn little about our own planet and each day seems to bring something new and exciting. Newly discovered Dolphins, actual concrete (ok amber) proof of feathered dinosaurs. Can't wait for tomorrow and the days following it.

Who is to say God or Godess doesn't use a good cloaking device now and then and make use of other aliens for earthly interventions. The cosmos is a complicated place.
I am also of the belief 99.9% of the people on earth are intelligent. Yes, they may not have formal education, but you do get points for everyday survival. With that being sad, a lot of inner touchy feelings are going on that says GOD exist even though we all can not put into scientific tangle hands.
Some day humans will find a whole dinosaur in amber. (And right next to that a space ship in amber.)
Guessing now, but 85 million years ago I believe the atmosphere had much higher oxygen content. In the article about they also mention a spider web. I wonder if this spider was like 20 times bigger and caught some of these dyno-chickens in its web for its afternoon lunch. All these things were found together, hmm.

@becosmos - In response to your comment:

Who is to say that the tooth fairy or Santa Claus don't exist? The only thing we know exists is what we can see, everything else is just speculation until it can be empiracally proven.
Maybe there is a god hiding somewhere, but the burden of proof lies firmly on the believers to prove it. As for everyone else, we don't need to convince anyone that something that can't be seen or sensed doesn't exist. It simply doesn't until you can show that it does.
To all those people who want a real life Jurassic Park...haven't you read the book? Or at least seen the movie?????? It obviously wouldn't end well.
