Electron-free magnetic microprocessors would use 1 million times less energy per flop than today's computers, according to researchers at the University of California-Berkeley. They would be so efficient, they would consume the least amount of energy allowed by the second law of thermodynamics.
For now, computers run on electricity, which means electrons moving around and generating waste heat. But a magnetic microprocessor would not need any electrons. Instead, it would use the polarity of nanoscale bar magnets to represent the 0 and 1 of binary memory. If the nanomagnets are packed close together, their poles will interact, serving as transistors and thereby allowing simple logic operations.
Jeffrey Bokor, UC Berkeley professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences, and grad student Brian Lambson are trying to develop these magnetic computers. Their goal is a computer that operates at the Landauer limit, which at room temperature equates to a loss of 18 millielectron volts of energy per operation. This is the minimum energy that a single logic operation, like AND or OR, would dissipate. A physicist named Rolf Landauer computed this limit 50 years ago.
That number, 18 thousandths of an electron volt, is the merest whiff of energy — for comparison, it is about half the thermal energy of atoms at room temperature. The Large Hadron Collider collides particles at a maximum of 7 trillion electron volts, which is equal to the energy you'd get from eating 0.00013 micrograms of a candy bar.
A computer that uses such infinitesimal power would be a major advancement, Bokor said in a Berkeley news release. If it the computer could work at colder temperatures, it would be even more efficient (the Landauer limit is proportional to temperature).
"Even if we could get within one order of magnitude, a factor of 10, of the Landauer limit, it would represent a huge reduction in energy consumption for electronics," he said. "It would be absolutely revolutionary."
Lambson and Bokor wanted to test the energy efficiency of a simple magnetic logic circuit and magnetic memory, so they conducted calculations and computer simulations. They found a simple memory operation, such as erasing a magnetic bit, "can be conducted with an energy dissipation very close, if not identical to, the Landauer limit," the news release says.
Current tests of these systems still require an electrical current to generate a magnetic field, which flips or erases a nanomagnet's polarity. But Bokor and colleagues hope that new materials, such as multiferroic alloys, could make the electrical currents unnecessary. A new era of magnetonics, instead of electronics, could be in our future.

I didn't catch any information about if and/or how the magnets affect the surrounding environment, will using one around or near a conventional computer wipe out the older style hard drive?
I see nothing about speed or even memory density or even a working prototype. All I see is a theory. I will wait a bit before I go looking for it in my next computer.
No it wont effect anything like that. Those fields are TINY and of puny strength. They would only work, and interact with each other, because of the inverse relationship between field strength and distance.
At one billionth of a meter such fields would interact with each other, but however strong they are then would weaken by trillion-fold at a millimeter distance.
Any potential problem is the other way around. The traditional hard drive could easily overpower any of these that were too close (unless perhaps they were a micron away from the drive-disc, they both might scramble then).
So in other words this computer would be highly compromised if even a refrigerator magnet near it which makes it in that sense 1,000 times worse than current computers.
Wouldn't they just magnet-shield the unit, then, to keep it from getting screwed up by outside magnetic fields? There should be some way of insulating it well enough to make it practical for use anywhere, I would think.

I thought that spinning electrons are the basis for magnetism of a bar magnet even if they are nanoscale bar magnets, the polarity of which creates the 1's and 0's.
I think her statement is misleading unless there is new way to generate a magnetic field without electrons through quantum physics.
The tetrahedron diagram, which plots ln mass vs ln wavelength, shows that the electron charge is actually the difference between the charge of space less the hyperspace charge.
The hyperspace charge is the length between the mass and wavelength of electron. I am calling this the hyperspace charge because it occurs outside our dimension on the diagram.
The charge of space is the linear mass of the universe times the Planck scale times the square root of the gravitational constant G times the permittivity of space, or 5.29x10^-19 coulomb.
Subtracting hyperspace charge from the charge of space is the electron charge. That is, the electron charge really comes from space and hyperspace which intuitively makes sense.
Also, there is a very simple equation that relates charge, mass and wavelength of the electron if you consider these as curvatures of a wormhole.
Because the electron has all these connections, it might be possible to take advantage of them for a new invention.

In natural logarithms, the value for the hyperspace charge from qs-qe is -42.44384 865 coulomb
and the value based on the above equation is
qh = -42.44384 447 coulomb
where the last three digits don't match.
Since the electrons create the magnetic field, and the electron charge depends on the linear capacitance and gravitational constant then the charge could be modified.
Because the gravitational constant is the speed of light squared divided by the linear mass of the universe, the linear mass and light speed can be changed using low density hyperspace energy. This would change the charge and therefore the magnetic field which depends on the circulation of electric charge.
This is how the gravitational wave is detected by increasing G using low-density low-speed-of-light hyperspace energy which produces a G that is magnified by 10^11 to give a value of 6.
And this is the method used to achieve hyperspace teleportation.
Notice that the gravitational constant could be negative if there is negative mass density which would switch the hyperspace charge to the imaginary axis. Negative mass density is created by electromagnetic fields. Thus there is a magnetic computer switch here.

When I was developing some electronic pulse circuits, I was experimenting with a Texas Instruments 555 timer. On the top of the chip were the printed white letters TI555.
After resuming work the next day, I looked at the chip and there were no letters on the chip and the chip was defective. That is, someone had taken the good chip and replaced it with a bad chip.
So I remote viewed the chip and found out who had taken it. During the conversation, they wondered if I could make a copy of the documentation and circuit diagram. So I did and they copied the information.
That is, I have had many of these hyperspace experiences which have given me insights into the physics. It sounds like crazy logic at the moment, but one day it will be the norm.
Most importantly, we need to change the vocabulary and refer to energy beings rather than spiritual beings, and refer to hyperspace energy rather than chi, orgone and things like that. In summary, the vocabulary has to be modernized.
