Along with meeting heads of state and talking free trade, President Obama made some new friends at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit last week. Before entering a meeting in Japan, he met a Geminoid F robot and a group of yowling robotic seals.
In the video below, Obama bemusedly listens to a speech by a Geminoid, as robotic seals are heard mewling in the background. He talks to Takanori Shibata, the creator of Paro, and acknowledges the seal 'bots could be helpful in hospitals or other places in need of a pick-me-up. Is the commander-in-chief stressed out? He seems particularly taken with the seals.
Finally, Obama takes a spin in Toyota's i-REAL personal mobility vehicle. He drives about an inch forward and almost leaps out when the machine suddenly tilts back.
We don't care how much the trip cost — video of Obama caressing plush robotic seals is priceless.
That chair thing looks like the chair things from the movie Wall-E.
That's not Obama, that's Robama the presidential robotic double. He flew in last week off the coast of L.A. demonstrating the might of the U.S. military.
Remind me again what this has to do with science? A political leader playing with robots is newsworthy? Glad I quit paying for the subscription to your magazine.
then obviously you have nothing to complain about since you don't pay for it. these people only seem to pop up when they see obama's name.
He doesn't seem all that impressed in the video .
They didn't even show that fem-bot dispensing the used p@nties. Or is that just everything else in Japan that does that?
The country prides itself and invests heavily in service, unfortunately that means replacing humans with robots at some point. No one is doing the humanitarian calculation.
... fuck, I want one!
It's Popular Science. It has the United States President, one of the most well known people on earth. Popular. It has robots that are cutting edge. Science. Ta-daa!!
Wow Obama, how about you doing somethign to fix this country enstead of playing with a robot in japan. I mean jeez so far all you done was raise taxes, spend billions of dollars, and spent the last 1 or 2 "trying" to fix the oil spill, which a matter of fact you didn't. BP fix the problem and created jobs in the procces. They did what you couldn't. Now hows playing with a robot in some other country surpose to help us middle-class and lower-class in U.S.A.?
Are you for real?
BP started the whole disaster that destroyed eco systems. They could not stop their own spill for months. I would not praise BP in any way. They have not helped anyone.
As for the President....well how do you expect him to clean up after Bush. Bush didnt care about the people of the U.S.A ever.
Why don't you save your comments for things you know about...like maybe science.
