Microsoft’s Hololens headset, which lets you see in augmented reality (a.k.a. making digital “hologram”-like characters appear in front of you) looks pretty sleek in its current iteration — as it should, since it costs $3,000! But it didn’t always look that way: as Wall Street Journal enterprise tech editor Ted Greenwald tweeted today, the prototype for the Hololens was far more inelegant, yet still extremely cool and futuristic-looking. It’s almost cyberpunky, like a prop from a Terry Gilliam movie .
