DIY Backyard Theater

Sure it takes some skill to put together, but the payoff is large-this rolling LCD projector lets you enjoy al fresco film nights all summer long.

Although Lumenlab has greatly simplified the LCD projector project with its ready-made parts, it’s still not a job for the DIY newbie. You’ll need carpentry skills to create an enclosure and wiring skills to connect all the parts without electrocuting yourself or burning down your projector. And then there’s the LCD panel stripping—even PopSci photographer John Carnett, a lifetime DIY guy, killed the first LCD TV we sent him.

Tech_stationBit-tech.net reviews the HighSpeed PC Tech Station, a computer case with its guts on the outside, ostensibly for easy swapping of new parts. I just think it looks cool, so PopSci photographer John Carnett, an avid welder, and I, an avid fan of John's welding, are going to build our own for our aforementioned DIY server project. We spoke with staff photographer John B. Carnett to get to the bottom of this not-so-simple question. Carnett says that it really depends on what you plan to do with the image. Great results for one person might be a grainy image, but one blown up large enough to cover a gaping hole in a bedroom wall. Others demand images that look just like the real thing.
