PopSci’s builder-in-residence outfits his four-wheeler with a screaming turbine

When John Carnett—Popular Science staff photographer, inventor and tinkerer-about-town—began confiding in people about plans for his latest project, he found few allies. Not surprisingly, almost no one wanted any part of his scheme to stuff a jet-turbine engine in a Polaris RZR all-terrain vehicle. But Carnett, who grew up near an airfield, remained undeterred.
Polaris has just introduced an electric version of the Ranger 400 side-by-side. This is very exciting to me. As you may remember, I'm the guy who built a rather non-green jet turbine side-by-side, but 114 dB does get old after a while.
Don your Nomex firesuit and industrial-grade ear protection: It's time to soak in some nature at 60mph. PopSci staff photographer/madman John Carnett has realized an unholy dream long in the making: an ATV powered entirely by a jet turbine.
And then he took it to the woods and pushed it to the limit; to the edge of logic, control and sanity.
