Camera makers regularly claim to have built a pocket-size camera that shoots DSLR-quality images. Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 actually does. The RX1 is the first compact digital camera whose image sensor—a 24.3-megapixel one, in this case—fills a full 35-millimeter frame, just like a film camera. Engineers also included a fixed-focal-length f/2 lens with a macro setting, which shifts some of the lens’s eight glass elements to allow the RX1 to focus on subjects as little as 5.5 inches away. $2,800
