Snakebots climb trees or shimmy up pipes by twisting individual body segments. The four-foot-long Snakebot developed at Israel Institute of Technology can keep moving even when damaged: Each segment contains self-controlled actuators so that if part of the robot becomes impaired, the rest of it can still function. The Snakebot can shed individual segments as mini payloads as well.
