Most wide-area radar systems detect objects as blips on a screen. The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) sensor array is sensitive enough to determine the actual shape of the vessel, allowing operators to distinguish between container ship, oil tanker, and surfacing Russian submarine. BAMS debuted in June aboard the MQ-4C Triton, a maritime version of the Global Hawk UAV. From 50,000 feet up, the BAMS-equipped drone can scan 2,000 nautical miles of ocean, and then fly in for a closer look when it sees a vessel of interest.
