Homebuilders can ditch the lumber and the expensive labor costs that go with it. These prefabricated, custom-made insulating panels are easier to assemble than conventional wood frames, and more energy-efficient. Kama’s K-tect system uses steel studs that are spaced apart to minimize heat loss and filled with ridged insulation called Neopor. Embedded with heat-deflecting graphite flakes and then expanded with steam, Neopor requires about 50 percent fewer raw materials than other polystyrenes. It’s also recyclable and resists fire, moisture, mildew and termites.

I'm super confused Pop Sci. In John Carnett's "The Green Dream" blog, on this site, he was less than impressed with the Kama-Eebs product, having to "fix" it with the Zip wall system.
How on earth, then, can this be considered "The Best Of What's New"?
Following up:
John's post is titled:
"The Green Dream Home Gets a Crucial Second Skin
An extra panel system called ZIP saves the day"
Come on! What gives?
Nice to see that these sections are monitored :(
Day six.....
Herb, you are right. It is a big disappointment that popsci doesnt care about their readers enough to follow up on users comments.
Lack of communication between departments, and an apparent lack of respect for readers... I'm disappointed too.
Might want to read all of the blogs. kama panels didn't need to be 'fixed'. Maybe builder didn't want to take the blame for his part.
My problem with this product being on the list is that it's not exactly 'new' or 'innovative'. SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) technology has been around for years and I don't see where this mfg has improved the SIP that much. Also, for price, efficiency, structural integrity and ease of use ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) technology is probably just as good if not better for most people. Many new innovations have been introduced in both SIP and ICF. I think the owners of this product must have agreed to an advertising budget with PopSci... that's the only real reason I can think of why it made the list. Cest la vie.
The problem was the manufacturer Lightship Group didn't manufacture well. Look to the manufacturer. Guess that's why kama won't let them manufacture for them anymore.
The insulating panels are recyclable and resist fire, moisture, mildew and termites, I think that’s pretty much how I want my house to be built. But what kind of environment are these insulating panels made for, hot, cold or both?
