Boeing Advanced Tactical Laser

The laser gun takes flight

Aviation & Space 9 of 11
Boeing Advanced Tactical Laser main

Truck-mounted IED-destroying lasers have already been tested in Iraq, but firing lasers from an airplane is a more difficult proposition. The first successful test of a plane-mounted laser gun came on August 7, when Boeing’s 18-ton chemical laser fired a beam from a C-130H aircraft and destroyed a three-by-three-foot target on the ground. It was the first time all of the ATL’s lab-tested pieces came together to vaporize a target. Why use a beam instead of a bomb? Precision strikes, with (theoretically) no collateral damage. The military hopes to deploy the system in the next five years. boeing.com

This looks like an ideal forest fire fighting platform. Cut precision fire lines from above to surgically fight the fire!

There is no way that laser can have a constant output of high energy. More likely the beam is a burst of energy focused on a target. Probably not too efficient for fire lines.

And I doubt fighting forest fires is what they have in mind here. Most assuredly a new high tech way to kill, maim and destroy people. We manage a continual high body count without yet another death platform that is really just the military spending what excess cash it has left over from other wasteful and of doubtful moral value 'research' funding. "No collateral damage" That's really cute. Most of our 'kills' are collateral damage. How many of those (closing in on 2 MILLION killed in 16 years) were 'insurgents', however you take that term?

gulfstreamtec,

First, your comment, though written well, was a dumbass thing to say.
Second, if you can do better, you're more welcome to come down here and take my place.

I think this is a awsom path for military wepons
think of the pools of knowlage coming out of the military to the private sector now we got more than "tank mechanics"
buy the way its very semalar to laser eye surgary and i dont recall anybody being nutered from that!!!!!!!!!!

Well said, Sergeant. Thank you so much for the sacrifices you and others like you make.

About the laser, it seems like a good idea, but bombs or missiles would still be necessary to take out targets inside buildings. Since they can do precision strike as well, this seems to be a bit of a waste of money that could be put towards new aircraft or munitions instead.

If these things are going to be flying around over battlefields, they had better be able to defend themselves or be assured of absolute air superiority. I love C-130 gunships, which this is basically a sci-fi version of, but they are extremely vulnerable themselves when employed against a sophisticated enemy.

Nearly instantaneous execution of the desired force, and I'd be willing to bet, from a great distance.

Better Execution and Safer for our guys.
Sounds like a Win - Win to me...

The only downside is the internet videos of them taking out insurgents won't be as fun to watch....about a halfa second of bright white lite, then not much to look at but the surrounding area (and maybe a dog trotting away)..

So it's a cool idea, but yeah it's another way to kill people. SO, it's cool to kill people but not unborn children for healing people........... . . . lol wow. strange world.

Oh quit crying you panzies! I am currently a proud U.S. MARINE and everyone complaining about killing people.... not just people, women, children oh yeah and dogs too. But only due to the fact that they are running at you with AK-47's and or strapping bombs to dogs. The fact of the matter is if we can find a weapon that can fire at great distances and pinpoint critical damage to reduce secondary casualties and damage to the surrounding area then more power to them!
I personally would love to have one of these mounted on my humvee to "laser snipe" a person trying to harm me (and if the capabilities applying to the weapon permit damage or complete destruction of vehicles (tanks, etc.) it would be inteligent of me to be as far away as possible.
Besiding the fact that enclosed compression of the laser would permit a smaller beam to disable any enemy vehicles just by punching a hole straight through them.... yup this laser was made to kill babies oh and dont forget to also create green house gasses.... imongi and gulfstreamtec i do hope you open your eyes, its not the grunts who are wrong its the politicians :)

P.S. It's Gunny Sgt. H.

This is not real. The government is a conspiracy. They lie to us about everything. Why would they share with us about a plane that could turn dead babies into rock statues. Yes, dead babies are being turned into rock statues everyday, because of this dumb government nonsense. Thanks you have a nice day.

Hold on Taio, I'm on your side. My reference to the Dog trotting away was a kudo to the precision at which you guys work. Keep up the good work.

Imongi, --- Are you saying that it's wrong to develop weapons to protect your country from bad guys, and yes Kill them. But it's OK to kill unborn babies?
Too bad your mom didn't think that way at the right time....You are one sick puppy

Can't we all just... get along?

njdevil, How bout you go ask the guys on the wrong side in Irag and Afganistan and see what they say...

then report back

AWESOME!!!
one step closer to every country in the world fearing us!!

Well historically the American tax payer has spent more money in the last 60 years trying to build a functional weapons grade tactical Laser (A RAY GUN BY ANY OTHER NAME)than it has any other single R&D project including the amassed 5000 nuclear weapons that we have in are arsenal (and that we're to afraid to use.) We went from Ruby and Diamond collimator lens lasers to the recirculating gas cooled lasers (Like a water cooled machine gun,,,Russians get credit for that one.) OK so we now can burn toast without the napalm from 30K feet. That's the beneficial technical application we've received for trillions spent over the decades. Hey we beat the commie's in the cold war with that kind of spending and a Ronnie Raygun president. OK historically speaking. Now we've just started a whole new counter laser war weapons cottage industry that will probably start with a computer controlled mirror, designed to beam back the coherent light beam back to it's point of origin. Military secrets seem to be so short lived,,,kind of like tax dollars once they see Washington. They evaporate like the concept of "TERM-LIMITS" during an election year. Like what else does man have to do with all this science while we wait for the pollution and other waste garnered processes to render us extinct.? Sounds like a flashy Idea to me!. Probably tested at Edwards or Eglin AFB, we most likely will now shelf it, for fear the other side will develop it, to use against us.Go Air Force Logistics Command! Why can't we use science to develop the technology necessary to !)Pull our own heads out our collective keesters.2)Stop political corruption. 3)Find a scientific way to stop killing each other for a change. 4)Maybe discover a tool or fuel that will help us save the planet from ourselves.
RADICAL IDEA? I'm gonna double lock my door tonight anyway. I wouldn't want to become a threat to the security of the free world for publicly criticizing my former employers.

So i'll just put a mirror on a missile so that it can deflect the laser back at the jet.. that would suck...

you cant bounce a high powered laser off a mirror dumbass

@cyberscriberofalabama
I'll start with the fact that Air Force Logistics Command hasn't existed since 1992 so I don't know where you expect it to go.
As for the rest of your moronic rant I just want to say that I'm glad at least some of my tax dollars are going toward one of the only two functions of the federal government as set forth by the constitution: defend our nation. I would rather kill the bad guys there than have to see another terrorist attack on American soil. I'm out here doing my part while you lay awake at night worrying that your tofu farts are contributing to climate change......

So what would you use that for? Making an Arm of Swiss Cheese!! Maybe someone already has a use for it! One for which it was specifically designed. Look at the facts! Portable, very high power, limited firing time, unlimited range. All you need is a tracking system and a large spinning mirror and you could vaporize a human target from space!

Im just wondering could we use it to heat a very large amount of popcorn in Putins house! hehe

I was wondering if any of you guys realize that a laser although high powered does not have unlimited range. The problem some don't nottice is that our atmosphere and the particals in it can alter the trajectory of the light.Therefor the power of the laser and effectiveness would be subjected to weather conditions greatly.Another flaw or problem is that the lenses of the weapon would need to be clean at all times (or at least befor firering) for it to efficient.Therefor a personal version wouldn't be pratical in some cases(althought technology hasn't come that far).

On the other hand it most likely would be more accurate and effective then any other weapon in the right Circumstances.

I wonder if the technology used when we watch a football game on television could be used with this platform. There, the technicians make a database of the field before the game, then replace the field with anything that changes, eg; football players, then add the line of scrimage etc, for the program. Here we could first make a computer database of a route in a place where a convoy is headed, then replace the view when the Boeing Laser Plane flies over to show and highlight anything that changes, such as an IED, to find potential targets. Maybee??

I had a great time working on this project. Glad to see so many are enjoying the fruits of my labor. Laslo says hi!

I think this would be a great defense system for prime targets of terrorist attacks. How difficult could it be to mount this to the rooftop of the white house or pentagon? As far as safety goes it would have to be controlled by humans and not computers. What's your thought?

i know the thing to solve all of that.
